Ontario to provide ice storm recovery funding for businesses, municipalities
Ontario Premier Doug Ford arrives in Barrie, Ont. on Friday, April 4, 2025 to inspect the damage from the ice storm and thank front-line workers and volunteers. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Drost The Ontario government says it's introducing two financial assistance programs to help municipalities and businesses recover from a severe March ice storm. The storm in late March left nearly 400,000 homes and businesses with power outages and damaged property as freezing rain covered parts of Ontario in layers of ice. The province says it will launch two one-time financial assistance programs to help with ice storm recovery, including one to help municipalities pay for emergency response and cleanup costs such as clearing fallen trees. The other program will provide up to $5 million for small businesses, small farms and not-for-profit organizations to pay for storm-related cleanup and essential repairs not covered by private insurance. Related Articles The province did not specify how much money it has set aside for the programs, but said final amounts for business assistance will be based on the number of applicants and eligible costs, while municipal funding will be based on the eligible emergency response and recovery costs. The province says eligible businesses and municipalities will have until Oct. 31 to apply for the funding. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 19, 2025.

‘This is not legitimate,' City of Barrie warns of scam circulating online
The old saying, 'If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,' definitely applies to a fraudulent social media post advertising six months of free rides on Barrie Transit. 'This offer is not legitimate and did not originate from the City of Barrie or Barrie Transit,' the City stated in a post aimed at warning residents of the fraudulent offer on social media Thursday. The Facebook post was created by an account called Public transit in Barrie, an account that appears to have been created Wednesday. In April, a similar post was created by an account called Public Transport in Barrie, which had no other posts and one follower. The most recent fraudulent post states Barrie Transit is offering 500 cards worth six months of unlimited rides for $4. It also contains a link to click to purchase the tickets. The City wants residents to know Barrie Transit doesn't offer a six-month pass. According to the City, a Barrie Transit day pass runs $8.50 per day, with monthly passes for adults costing $92 per month. Passes are available for purchase at any Barrie recreational centre, Service Barrie at City Hall or at the Barrie Transit Terminal on Maple Avenue, or on the HotSpot app. Residents are warned to never click unknown links, which could expose you to malware, phishing scams and data breaches.

This is on the agenda for Barrie council's last meeting before summer break
It's not school's out for the summer, it's council is out. The last Barrie City Council meeting will be held Wednesday night. It's not school's out for the summer — it's council is out. The last Barrie city council meeting before the summer break will be held Wednesday night. Many items have been passed through the general committee and will finally be ratified in the evening. Among them, Barrie's south end Sports and Library Complex. That project was only unveiled to the public two weeks ago. And just last week, council's general committee passed it as a single complex to service the Hewitt's and Salem areas along with several revisions, including a reduction in size to the library. Council could also approve the schematic design of a proposed performing arts centre, setting aside nearly $500,000 for architects to refine the project's scope and improve projections for construction costs. As things stand, the price tag is about $65 million. 'It can be used for convention space, it can be used for world-class arts performances. This is going to be a huge draw for downtown Barrie and a huge anchor for the City of Barrie.' Said Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall. 'If you can think about the amount of folks that will be able to have weddings there and really enjoy our city centre right on the waterfront bridging it into our downtown it's, I think, a huge piece for the city we've been missing for a long time.' We just saw thousands make their way downtown for the Troubadour Festival concert series. Nuttall thinks a world-class performing arts centre could bring that type of talent regularly to Barrie and draw in the masses. Some council committees are already underway Wednesday.
