USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Zach Banner in focus The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 73 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look at former USC offensive lineman Zach Banner. Position: Offensive line Years played at USC: 2012-2016 Career highlights: Banner redshirted his first year at USC in 2012 and missed the majority of the 2013 season with a hip injury. As a redshirt sophomore in 2014, he won USC's starting right tackle job, a role that he would hold down for the next three years. In both 2015 and 2016, Banner was named first-team All-Pac-12. During his 2016 redshirt senior season, Banner served as a team captain and helped lead the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory over Penn State. After USC: The Indianapolis Colts selected Banner in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft. However, he was waived prior to the team's first game of the season. The following day, Banner was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns, with whom he would spend his rookie year. After being released by the Browns, and a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers, Banner signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, for whom he would play from 2018-2021. He was released by Pittsburgh in 2022. After nearly three years out of football, Banner signed with the UFL's Houston Roughnecks this past March.

Brave Clare come up clutch to shock Cork and seal All-Ireland final berth

All-Ireland MHC semi-final: Clare 0-27 Cork 1-22 Ger O'Connell hailed his Clare team for their brave finish to spring an All-Ireland semi-final shock on Munster champions Cork. The sides were level 11 times in front of 2,855 fans at Semple Stadium, but the Banner were more assured at the death, despite hitting 14 wides. Their clever passing moves cut through Cork around the middle and created a steady flow of scoring chances. In an absorbing last-four clash, Paul Rodgers, the younger brother of senior star Mark, topped the scoring charts. He tallied 0-13, including 10 frees and an exceptional sideline cut from close to the 65. Ben Talty and Ian O'Brien were other major contributors, while Dara Kennedy performed the dual function of defensive anchor and attacking springboard. 'We've made so many mistakes trying to work the ball. You'd have lads saying just hit the fecking ball. But we're trying to encourage these guys to play,' said O'Connell. 'Under pressure, we really showed quality on the ball. Coming off the shoulder when the easy thing to do would have been to lump a ball. 'We've really tried to encourage the boys to do the right thing. Make mistakes. That's okay. They're young lads. They're going to make them. 'The boys came up trumps in the last 5-10 minutes. They're a brilliant bunch and I'm so proud.' A weekend of upsets results in a novel All-Ireland final pairing. The 2023 champions will meet Waterford in a fortnight for the third-ever all-Munster final. For Cork, Cormac Deane scored 1-2 and assisted six points, Eoghan O'Shea struck 0-5, and free-taker Craig O'Sullivan tallied 0-8. Callum Coffey scored a hat-trick in their Munster round-robin victory over the same opponents, but injury reduced him to a bench role here. 'The better team on the day won,' reflected Cork manager Fergal McCormack, who now hands over to U16 boss Donal Mulcahy. 'We've a great bunch, and they've done everything that we could possibly ask of them. Even down to the last minute, I had belief that our fellas would come good. 'But Clare dug in there, got their scores, and turned us over a few times, which was tough to take. They seemed to be playing triangles, which got the better of us a few times.' Cork started slow, and even Deane's fifth-minute goal couldn't immediately lift them. The Killeagh youngster cut onto his left and blasted a low shot from the 21 to the net for a 1-1 to 0-3 lead. Leon Talty denied him a second goal, by which time Clare had rebuilt a three-point lead. They were sparked by three in a row from Rodgers, and all six forwards were on the board by half-time. They led 0-15 to 1-10, but Cork were back in front by the 33rd minute as O'Sullivan's brace bookended Deane's second point. The sides were level six times in the third quarter, with Rodgers' frees accounting for four Banner points. Substitute Jack Counihan got a first-touch point in the 44th minute, which proved to be Cork's final lead. The Banner were working the sliotar better and they produced a decisive move with four points out of five between the 51st and 58th minutes. Liam Murphy, O'Brien, and two Rodgers frees made it a 0-26 to 1-20 lead. Cork weren't done yet as Michael T Brosnan's third point and O'Shea's fifth left one between the sides entering stoppage time. But Niall Doyle drew the free for Rodgers' insurance score. Ger Brennan reacts as 'win at all costs' display puts Louth in prelim 1/4 finals

Louth's historic summer rolls on after what was turning into a stroll in O'Moore Park became a tension-filled affair late on as Clare fought for their championship lives. Still fresh from ending the county's 68-year wait for a Leinster title, Ger Brennan's side are into the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals having needed at least a draw in their final group game in Portlaoise. Their reward is to face one of the championship's big guns away next weekend. "The aim today was to win at all costs," said the former Dublin ace. "It doesn't have to be pretty - today it wasn't pretty - but we got over the line and we're in the hat for tomorrow morning, and that was the main aim. "It was a mixed bag, it was a mixture of good, bad and terrible. But to be fair to the lads, we are asking them to try and pick up the pace with ball in hand and that probably takes some time to adapt to. Clare put a lot of pressure on our lads in possession but we came out by three points in the end and we're thrilled. "It's exciting to be fair to the GAA, to have the draws after the weekend's action, it adds to the competition. We'll go anywhere. We've got great support. "It was probably nine to one in favour of Louth in the stand today, even though we keep giving them heart attacks - and myself a heart attack on occasion - but they are our 16th man." Brennan acknowledged himself that Manus Doherty's 17th minute black card for Clare was the key moment in a contest that was a slow burn until the Banner threw everything into their second half comeback. Slow starts had been Louth's Achilles heel for much of the League and Championship and they were again second best in the early stages here as the Banner, who needed a victory to progress, rattled over three points inside the opening four minutes. That combined with some poor decision-making in attack made for an edgy Louth start and it wasn't until the 11th minute that they registered a score through Conor Grimes. But then the Wee County took full advantage when Doherty was sidelined for 10 minutes for his foul on Craig Lennon, with Kieran Downey excelling. "We found a bit of a rhythm after they took an early lead and that's been like our starts in the League and Championship this year, where we were slow to get up and running," said Brennan. "It didn't take as long today and so that's a bit of an improvement. When Clare went down to 14 men we made hay and that probably got us over the line. We just didn't kill them off in the second half." Mulroy put his team ahead for the first time and, while Mark McInerney replied to level it after Mulroy was dispossessed by Ikem Ugwueru, the floodgates opened. Downey scored his second point and, from the kick-out, Clare's Emmet Carolan coughed up possession - Lennon found Mulroy, who hit the net from eight yards. Lennon waltzed through the Banner defence just moments later but his goal-bound shot was blocked on the line by Eoin Cleary. But the second goal came on 23 minutes when Cillian Rouine was dispossessed near his own goal by Downey and he charged through to score Louth's second goal. Downey fired over again and, by the time Doherty returned, Clare were 2-7 to 0-4 adrift. A superb Downey score ended the half and Louth had a eight point advantage, but that cut just a minute after the restart when the Louth forward's errant pass opened the door for Rory McMahon to score Clare's first goal. Aaron Griffin was denied a second soon after by Louth keeper Niall McDonnell and suddenly Louth were back playing an edgy game. Clare chipped away at the lead. A good chance was wasted when Downey was lost possession but Dermot Coughlan fired wide, then Shane Griffin crossed for Aaron Griffin, but he tapped over the bar. A 20m free converted by Mulroy for two points after Clare were penalised for having two men in their own half allowed Louth to breathe a little easier, but the Banner kept coming. McDonnell made a fine save from Shane Griffin but, on 61 minutes, Aaron Griffin hit the post and Cleary knocked home the rebound and it was back to a five-point game. A Mulroy miss with another 20m free added to the anxiety building in Louth's supporters and McDonnell was injured as he bravely fisted away a dangerous ball in. Keelan Sexton came off the bench for Clare and almost scored a third goal three minutes from time, but his effort flew over to leave three points between them - and Louth managed to not let the margin get any closer in the final moments. REFEREE: Barry Tiernan (Dublin) QUOTE ME ON THAT 'Oh you couldn't but be proud of them. By Jesus, somebody said there they died on their backs and they died with their shoes on. It wasn't looking good at half-time, we struggled big time during the black card. We conceded something like 2-4 in that window and that really hurt us. Down eight at half-time, a kick of the ball in it at the end, you would have to be very proud of the lads.' Clare boss Peter Keane after watching his side bow out of the championship. STAR MAN Ciarán Downey (Louth) Was the player who really stepped up when Clare were down to 14 and scored his side's first goal, though he wasn't as influential in the second half. AN OTHER 'The higher standard you play the better you are going to get. It's interesting this week now there seems to be a move by the Muster Council to go back to seeding Cork and Kerry which I think would be a terrible move for football in the province - Peter Keane is concerned about the prospect of a return to seedings in the Munster SFC. UP NEXT CLARE: Out of the championship; LOUTH: All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final, next weekend.
