Former MIC president Palanivel's remains cremated in Sentul
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — The remains of former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who passed away on Tuesday, were cremated at the Sentul Hindu Crematorium here at around 4.30pm today. Earlier, the late leader's body was transported by van from his residence at Jalan Bangkung, Taman Bandaraya, Bangsar, at about 3pm and arrived at the crematorium 45 minutes later. The 45-minute ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere, attended by around 200 individuals, including family members, MIC vice-chairman Datuk T. Murugaiah, and members of the public. Speaking to Bernama, Murugaiah described Palanivel as a leader who made immense contributions to the party and the community, adding that his sacrifices would always be remembered. Palanivel passed away at 8am on Tuesday at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, leaving behind his wife, Datin Seri P. Kanagam, and four sons. Born on March 1, 1949, in Penang, Palanivel began his career as a research officer with the National Museum under the Bujang Valley Project in 1973 before joining the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as a senior journalist in April 1977. In 1984, he was appointed as editor of domestic and economic news at Bernama and was later seconded as press secretary to then Works Minister Tun S. Samy Vellu from 1987 to 1990. Palanivel had been active in politics through MIC since the early 1970s and contested his first general election in 1990. He assumed leadership of MIC in 2010 following Samy Vellu's retirement. He won the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the 1990 general election and held it for four consecutive terms before losing in 2008, later returning to Parliament in 2013 as the Cameron Highlands MP. Palanivel played a vital role in MIC's leadership, starting as the party's treasurer-general from 1991 to 1994 before being appointed as vice-president in 1995, a post he held for 10 years. He continued his leadership journey as deputy president from 2006 to 2010 and was appointed MIC president in December 2010, a position he held until 2015. Throughout his tenure, Palanivel was known for his dedication to championing the rights and development of the Indian community and initiating various reforms within the party. — Bernama

Political leaders and family pay last respects to former MIC president Palanivel
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — A funeral prayer was held today for former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who died on Tuesday morning at the age of 76. Over the past two days, relatives, friends, and political figures gathered at his family's residence in Bangsar to pay their final respects. Among those present yesterday were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, MIC president Tan Sri S. Vigneswaran, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. Around 60 people attended today's final rites. The funeral procession began around 1.40pm, led by Palanivel's four sons dressed in white dhotis. They carried the casket from inside the house to the porch, where prayers were performed. Outside the house, an Indian female Rela officer directed traffic, ensuring the procession moved smoothly. Family members and relatives took turns offering their final respects, chanting prayer mantras, including the Shiva Mantra. Palanivel, who also served as the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, passed away on Tuesday morning at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. — Pciture by Sayuti Zanudin The casket was closed at approximately 2.54pm and draped with Palanivel's wife's wedding saree, predominantly red with a broad blue panel. Palanivel's sons, along with others present, carried the casket to a brown Toyota Vellfire belonging to Malaysian Indian Casket, which transported it to the Sentul Hindu Crematorium. The vehicle departed around 3.05pm, accompanied by a convoy of four other cars with hazard lights on. The procession moved slowly toward the crematorium, where the cremation was scheduled to take place after the prayers. Palanivel, who also served as the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, passed away on Tuesday morning at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. He led MIC from 2010 to 2015, strengthening the party's role within Barisan Nasional (BN) and enhancing educational opportunities for ethnic Indians through the Maju Institute of Educational Development and AIMST University. Palanivel was first elected as Hulu Selangor MP in 1990, serving four consecutive terms before losing the seat in 2008. He returned to Parliament in 2013 as Cameron Highlands MP.

Former MIC president Palanivel mourned as a statesman and advocate for education
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Political leaders today paid their final respects to former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who passed away yesterday morning at the age of 76. DAP leaders M. Kulasegaran and Teresa Kok expressed their condolences, calling his death a significant loss to the nation. 'In Parliament, he was honest and frank. Even though he was from the opposing side, he was always accommodating and good-natured,' said Kulasegaran at Palanivel's family home in Bangsar. Seputeh MP Teresa Kok remembered him as a gentleman during his tenure in government. 'I had a good relationship with both him and Tun Samy Vellu. Whenever I faced issues in my constituency, they stepped in to help. I'm grateful for all his advice. His passing is truly a loss to the nation. May he rest in peace,' she said. Palanivel, who also served as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, died yesterday morning at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. NIOSH wants tighter safety measures at construction sites after Bangsar incident
NIOSH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said preventive steps, such as perimeter fencing, security surveillance and clear warning signage, must be standard at all construction sites. KUALA LUMPUR : The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has urged for improved safety measures at construction sites following the discovery of a British traveller's body at a site in Bangsar recently. NIOSH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the incident raised questions about how the public could access the area and called for a review of existing safety protocols. 'Construction sites are inherently high-risk and should not, under any circumstances, be accessible to the public,' he said in a statement today. On June 5, police confirmed that the body found the previous day at a construction site in Bangsar was that of the missing 25-year-old British national, last seen on May 27. Chong said Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act (OSHA) 2022 spells out the duty of employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees at the workplace, while Section 17 emphasises the responsibility to safeguard others present at the site. 'Employers and self-employed individuals are also required, as far as reasonably practicable, to ensure that their operations do not pose safety or health risks to non-employees. 'They must also provide information on any hazards that could affect the safety or health of individuals present at the worksite,' the statement said. Chong reminded developers, contractors and all relevant parties to comply with the Act or risk being fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. He said that preventive steps, such as effective perimeter fencing, adequate security surveillance, systematic access control, and clear warning signage, must be standard at all construction sites. 'Risk management at construction sites should not only focus on protecting workers, but also on ensuring the safety of the public, especially in densely populated urban areas frequented by tourists,' he said. In addition, NIOSH wants the occupational safety and health department and the Construction Industry Development Board to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify any breach of standard operating procedures (SOPs) or provisions under OSHA. Chong added that NIOSH is ready to cooperate with authorities and the industry to promote a stronger safety culture through training, awareness programmes and a better understanding of the OSHA (Amendment) 2022.

Briton dies in Malaysia after missing appeal
The death of a British man in Malaysia has been confirmed by the Foreign Office after a mother appealed over her missing son. Backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, from Southport, was last seen in Kuala Lumpur on the evening of 27 May, his mother Leanne Burnett said. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was assisting the family of a British man who died in Malaysia and was in contact with local authorities. In a social media appeal for assistance in the search for her son, Ms Burnett said Mr Johnson-Doyle's family had been working with Malaysian police to try and find him. Police in Kuala Lumpur reportedly found a body at a construction site in Bangsar on Wednesday, according to Malaysian media. Ms Burnett previously told the BBC she had flown out to Malaysia earlier this week to try and help in the search. Merseyside Police said it had received a report on 30 May that Mr Johnson-Doyle had gone missing in Malaysia. "Our international liaison officers are working with the relevant authorities in Malaysia together with the UK Missing Persons Unit and enquiries are in the process of being carried out," a spokesperson said.
