Luis Guevara, 19, was signed by the Orioles as an international free agent out of Tinaco, Venezuela, the Baltimore Orioles said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. 'Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time,' Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias said. SCFR transported two patients to the hospital as trauma alerts, and two other victims suffered minor injuries. 'On behalf of all members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, we would like to express our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the victim,' FWC said in a press release. Docs, 911 calls reveal more details about deadly jet ski crash near Lido Key
SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, 911 calls started pouring in from beachgoers at South Lido Beach. 'You guys need to get out here ASAP,' said one caller. 'We saw the two jet skis hit each other, they collided, and the guy, he is unresponsive,' said another. Some callers described it as a head-on collision, while others said one jet ski 'ran over' the other. Two of four riders were transported to the hospital as trauma alerts, including 19-year-old Orioles minor league infielder Luis Guevara, who didn't survive his injuries. News Channel 8 obtained a report from officers who responded to the chaotic scene that evening. The report says two individuals, 19 and 20 years old, flagged officers down and admitted to being on one of the jet skis involved in the incident. Miguel Rodriguez and Jesus Palacios, both on the Baltimore Orioles minor league roster, said they rented the jet skis. The report states they told officers 'they hit a wave which caused their jet ski to launch into the air. Control of the jet ski was completely lost, and they bailed off the jet ski.' While the jet ski was in the air, it struck Guevara and a 20-year-old rider from Bradenton, causing them to fall off their jet ski and into the water. The Orioles' prospects told police a nearby boat helped get them out of the water to bring them all to shore. Officers were told someone was bringing the jet skis involved to the 10th Street boat ramp. The watercraft were later recovered at the ramp. The report says the individuals bringing the jet skis to the ramp, initially acted like they were unaware of the crash. They were not named in the report. Tampa Bay Rays pitcher taken to hospital after getting hit by foul ball in dugout
TAMPA, Fla. — Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge was carted off the field in a frightening scene and taken to a hospital after getting struck in the face by a foul ball lined into the Tampa Bay dugout Thursday night. Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to converse with first responders, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. In the top of the seventh inning, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman sharply pulled a pitch into the Tampa Bay dugout on the first base side and the ball hit Bigge, a 27-year-old right-hander currently on the injured list. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived to attend to Bigge. After several quiet minutes, as visibly concerned Rays players knelt in the field, Bigge was loaded onto a stretcher and carted off. After the game, Cash said Bigge was struck in the face. The ball left Rutschman's bat at 105 mph, according to Statcast. Bigge, on the 15-day injured list with a lat strain, received a standing ovation from the Steinbrenner Field crowd as he was loaded onto a cart. The game resumed after an eight-minute delay, and Baltimore held on for a 4-1 victory. Bigge was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2019 amateur draft from Harvard and made his major league debut for them on July 9 last year. He was traded 19 days later to Tampa Bay along with Christopher Morel and minor leaguer Ty Johnson for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes. In 32 career appearances, including one start, Bigge has a 2.51 ERA and one save. This season, he has a 2.40 ERA in 13 relief outings covering 15 innings.
