Lonzo Ball was supposed to revive the Los Angeles Lakers but something went wrong

(Image Source - Getty Images) Lonzo Ball, picked second overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, came to the Los Angeles Lakers with a lot of potential: a local hero dubbed "the new face of the Lakers," known for his flashy assists, strong defense, and a confident style. But what started as a bright future quickly turned into a sad story as injuries piled up, games were lost, and hope faded away. Instead of sparking excitement at Staples Center, it became a cautionary tale of unmet expectations—and unanswered questions. How a dazzling draft-night dream spiraled into Lakers draft history regret In 2017, the Lakers picked Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 pick, following two consecutive lottery selections, as they looked to him to shape their future with his diverse skill set. He quickly made a name for himself, snagging Summer League MVP with some incredible triple-doubles—an exhilarating preview of what many expected to be a groundbreaking rookie season. Unfortunately, Ball's rookie year was cut short by persistent shoulder and knee issues, limiting him to only 52 games. In his second season, he managed just 47 appearances as ankle and knee troubles continued to hold him back. His numbers—10.2 PPG, 7.2 APG, 6.9 RPG—were respectable, but for a No. 2 pick meant for greatness, it felt lacking. By 2019, the Lakers were craving reliable help for LeBron James, so they made a bold move sending Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart in a major trade to acquire Anthony Davis. This deal redefined the Lakers' championship plan around a proven star—but it also meant sacrificing Ball's opportunity to thrive in purple and gold. Once he left LA, Ball established a strong presence in New Orleans and Chicago, hitting his career highs before more knee surgeries put him on the sidelines for 1,006 days. However, back in Los Angeles, he's still on ClutchPoints' list of the franchise's 10 most regrettable draft picks, not because he wasn't talented, but because he didn't achieve the superstar path that was anticipated in 2017. The Lakers chapter of Lonzo Ball's career is filled with bright moments dimmed by the weight of expectations and injuries. Picked as a transformative player, he provided glimpses—spectacular assists, strong defense—but never fully realized his potential while in Los Angeles. Also Read: Ime Udoka's rise in Houston Rockets just triggered one of the boldest moves this offseason The blockbuster trade for Davis definitely benefited the Lakers, but Ball's legacy is a tale of what might have been: a local talent whose potential faded before it could fully blossom, reminding everyone that even the most promising players can dim before their prime. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

LaMelo Ball's latest tattoos revealed during offseason, took five artists to finish the job

LaMelo Ball. Image via: Getty Images Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is making headlines off the court during the NBA offseason. Ball has dramatically expanded his body art collection. Already known for his bold fashion choices and a distinct personal brand, the 2021-22 All-Star added an eye-popping array of tattoos that has quickly gone viral. The transformation, which reportedly involved multiple sessions and several artists, shows how Ball continues to shape his public image beyond basketball. LaMelo Ball turns heads with massive ink project and a powerful message This offseason, LaMelo Ball took it to another level with a dramatic full-body tattoo expansion. Fans first noticed Ball's heavily inked arms and chest, but the reveal of his neck and chest piece took social media by storm. He added, "God Soldier" with red ink. Tattoo artist Herchell L Carrasco, a Los Angeles-based inker who has worked with Ball for years, shared the latest work on Instagram with the caption: "Hardest Tattoos in the NBA? @Melo came in for 2 Sessions with my team." But those sessions were just part of a much larger project. According to Complex, last year, the massive back tattoo— featuring the phrase "Rare One" in two different fonts, a UFO, an alien head, and multiple spiritual symbols— took a dedicated crew of six artists to complete. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025: Steel Suppliers From Mexico At Lowest Prices (Take A Look) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo Carrasco revealed that completing the work was a feat in itself. Alongside him were Jorge Garibay, Niz Carillo, Elvis Ramos, Juan Nambo, and Jonas Aguila. The team spent three consecutive days, each with a grueling six-hour session, working on Ball's back, though he wouldn't disclose the total price tag, only saying it was around $20,000. The symbolism behind the tattoos is personal for Ball. The "RARE ONE" phrase across his back stands as a signature mantra he's used throughout his career. A UFO near his neck includes a nod to his LaFrance brand, while spiritual symbols like crosses on his elbows and an alien head further emphasize his eccentric style. Jessie J beams ahead of final performance before breast cancer surgery

Jessie J has made a triumphant red carpet return to the Capital Summertime Ball 2025 after revealing her breast cancer diagnosis. The Price Tag hitmaker recently shared that she was diagnosed with 'early breast cancer' a few months ago and plans to undergo surgery. Consequently, her set at Capital's STB with Barclaycard will mark her final performance before she retreats from the limelight for a while. Jessie, 37, was all smiles as she rocked up to Wembley Stadium this afternoon, posing confidently for cameras before treating the thousands-strong crowd to live renditions of her hits. The pop star looked gorgeous in all black, sporting a figure-hugging mini dress with sheer mesh sleeves and matching tights. She slicked her famous raven locks back into a bun and accessorised with minimal jewellery and natural makeup. Jessie joins a mightily impressive lineup for this year's Ball, JADE opening the show before the likes of Mariah Carey and Will Smith perform. Ahead of her appearance, Jessie confirmed that she is due to 'disappear for a bit' after bowing out in spectacular style, holding onto the fact that her cancer was picked up 'early'. The star, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, explained in an Instagram video that she has spent much of her recent time 'in and out of tests'. 'I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding on to the word 'early',' she shared. Maintaining her typical comedia streak, she continued: 'It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job. 'I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive t**s and more music.' More Trending 'I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support, and also their own stories. I'm an open book. 'It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse—that's the bit that kills me.' She continued: 'The timing of it has been mad but also beautiful and given me this incredible perspective in this time. 'But honestly, I need to process it and talk about it, and I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times. And I don't want this to be any different' Got a story? With A 9.6% Return On Equity, Is Ball Corporation (NYSE:BALL) A Quality Stock?

Many investors are still learning about the various metrics that can be useful when analysing a stock. This article is for those who would like to learn about Return On Equity (ROE). To keep the lesson grounded in practicality, we'll use ROE to better understand Ball Corporation (NYSE:BALL). Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits. We've found 21 US stocks that are forecast to pay a dividend yield of over 6% next year. See the full list for free. The formula for return on equity is: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Ball is: 9.6% = US$532m ÷ US$5.6b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025). The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every $1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn $0.10 in profit. See our latest analysis for Ball Arguably the easiest way to assess company's ROE is to compare it with the average in its industry. However, this method is only useful as a rough check, because companies do differ quite a bit within the same industry classification. If you look at the image below, you can see Ball has a lower ROE than the average (14%) in the Packaging industry classification. That's not what we like to see. Although, we think that a lower ROE could still mean that a company has the opportunity to better its returns with the use of leverage, provided its existing debt levels are low. When a company has low ROE but high debt levels, we would be cautious as the risk involved is too high. To know the 2 risks we have identified for Ball visit our risks dashboard for free. Virtually all companies need money to invest in the business, to grow profits. That cash can come from retained earnings, issuing new shares (equity), or debt. In the first two cases, the ROE will capture this use of capital to grow. In the latter case, the use of debt will improve the returns, but will not change the equity. In this manner the use of debt will boost ROE, even though the core economics of the business stay the same. Ball clearly uses a high amount of debt to boost returns, as it has a debt to equity ratio of 1.21. Its ROE is quite low, even with the use of significant debt; that's not a good result, in our opinion. Debt does bring extra risk, so it's only really worthwhile when a company generates some decent returns from it. Return on equity is a useful indicator of the ability of a business to generate profits and return them to shareholders. A company that can achieve a high return on equity without debt could be considered a high quality business. If two companies have around the same level of debt to equity, and one has a higher ROE, I'd generally prefer the one with higher ROE. But ROE is just one piece of a bigger puzzle, since high quality businesses often trade on high multiples of earnings. The rate at which profits are likely to grow, relative to the expectations of profit growth reflected in the current price, must be considered, too. So you might want to take a peek at this data-rich interactive graph of forecasts for the company. But note: Ball may not be the best stock to buy.
