Three from Odisha to get Bal Sahitya and Yuva Puraskar

BHUBANESWAR: Three authors from Odisha have been chosen for the Bal Sahitya Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar for 2025 by the Central Sahitya Akademi, in both Odia and Santali languages. In Odia language, while Subrat Kumar Senapati has been selected for the Yuva Puraskar for his book of short stories 'Kadambabana', Rajkishore Padhi will receive the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for 'Kete Phula Phutichi', a book of poetry. Similarly, Mayurbhanj's Fagu Baskey will be conferred the Yuva Puraskar for his poetry collection 'Ala Saon Inj' in Santali language. This was announced by the Central Sahitya Akademi on Wednesday following its executive board meeting which was presided over by Akademi's president Madhav Kaushik. The books were chosen on the basis of recommendations made by a jury of three members each in the languages. The Bal Sahitya Puraskar relates to books published between 2019 and 2023. For Bal Sahitya Puraskar, the Odia jury included writers Niladri Bhusan Harichandan, Sankuntala Baliarsingh and Ramachandra Nayak. Likewise, the Yuva Puraskar Odia jury had Yashodhara Mishra, Rabi Swain and SuvashChandra Satapathy. And the Santali jury had Dulee Hembram, Kasunath Soren and Madan Mohan Soren. Celebrated author Padhi had previously in 2015 received the Odisha Sahitya Akademi award for children's literature. While Senapati is known for his short stories, he currently works as an assistant professor in the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, SOA University. Similarly, Fagu is serving as an assistant teacher at Kumbhir Mundi primary school under Bangriposi block in Mayurbhanj the awardees will receive engraved copper plaques and a cash reward of `50,000 each at a special function by the Sahitya Akademiat a later date.

Bhubaneswar: Two from Odisha will receive the prestigious Yuva Puraskar, while another has been selected for the Bal Sahitya Puraskar this year by Kendra Sahitya Akademi. The names, announced on Wednesday, include Subrat Kumar Senapati who won Yuva Puraskar in Odia language for his short stories collection, 'Kadambabana', while Fagu Baskey was selected for the same award in Santali language for his poetry collection, 'Ala Saon inj'. While congratulating the recipients, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said in an X post, "My best wishes to Rajkishore Padhi and Subrata Kumar Sahabi for the award. This success is not only your personal success but also a matter of pride and honour for the Odia language and literature. May you further enrich the treasure trove of Odia literature with your creations in the coming days." An elated Senapati said, "I am delighted to be selected for the award and my responsibility as a writer will increase after this honour. Through my writings, I try to shed light on the untold emotions of people and characters who were not widely covered in Odia literature, like transgenders, gay and lesbians." Senapati is currently a faculty member at SOA University's Institute of Agricultural Science in Bhubaneswar. Baskey from Bholagadia village in Mayurbhanj district emerged as one of the most promising voices in contemporary Santali literature. He is widely known for his contribution to the digitisation of the Santali language and promoting Santali literature on digital platforms. "I am really happy that my book was selected for the award. This is a recognition of indigenous literature on a national platform," Baskey said. Each award includes a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a citation plaque (memento) and a shawl. A special ceremony will be held in New Delhi where the three will receive the awards.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Sahitya Akademi's Bal Sahitya Puraskar winner poet Suresh Sawant on Wednesday said writing for children in simple language was a challenging yet rewarding task, sharing that his 40-year journey of creating content for young readers was a exploratory experience. From Maharashtra, Sawant (65) and Pradeep Kokare were on Wednesday announced as the recipients of Bal Sahitya Puraskar and Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar, respectively. Sawant received the award for 'Aabhalmaya', his poetry collection published in 2023. A resident of Nanded, Sawant has penned 33 books for children. He said understanding child psychology was key to produce any literature for the young ones. "I strive to balance entertainment and knowledge in my writing for children," Sawant said, expressing his delight that his work resonates with his young readers. A deep admirer of Sane Guruji, a teacher and freedom fighter known for his literary work for children, Sawant said the award from Sahitya Akademi made him indebted to children. 'Jambhulbet', 'Balakniti' and 'Palaspadi' are the poetry collections of Sawant that won state govt award for best literature. Vishnupuram Saravanan bags Sahitya Akademi's Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2025 for Tamil

Writer Vishnupuram Saravanan has been awarded the Bal Sahitya Puraskar of the Sahitya Akademi for 2025 in the Tamil language category for his children's novel Otrai Siragu Oviya. Published in 2019 by Books for Children, an imprint of Bharathi Puthakalayam, the novel blends elements of fantasy, ecology, and socio-political themes. Mr. Saravanan hails from Vishnupuram in Tiruvarur district. He is currently associated with children's magazine initiatives of the Tamil Nadu School Education Department. He has previously worked in Tamil media for nearly a decade and has authored several children's books. Speaking to The Hindu, he said that he was deeply honoured by the recognition. 'This book is very close to my heart. My friends often say that even if I write many more, Otrai Siragu Oviya will always remain the best.' The Sahitya Akademi also announced the Yuva Puraskar 2025 in Tamil to writer Latshmihar for the short story Koothondru Kooditru. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar announced for 23 writers, and Bal Puraskar for 24 authors

The Sahitya Akademi on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) announced the names of 23 writers for its 'Yuva Puraskar' and 24 for 'Bal Puraskar' awards. Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, is the Central institution for literary dialogue, publication and promotion in the country and the only institution that undertakes literary activities in 24 Indian languages, including English. The Yuva Puraskar would be given in 23 languages. The awardees include Advait Kottary in English, Parvati Tirkey in Hindi, Latshmihar for Tamil and Prasad Suri for Telugu. There is no Yuva Puraskar in Dogri this year. Other winners include Suprakash Bhuyan for Assamese, Sudeshna Moitra for Bengali, R. Dileepkumar for Kannada, and Akhil P. Dharmajan for Malayalam. 'The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi in its meeting held today, under the Chairmanship of its President, Sri Madhav Kaushik approved selection of 23 writers who were selected on the basis of recommendations made by the Jury comprising three members each in the concerned language in accordance with the rules and procedure laid down for the purpose,' an official statement said. The Akademi also announced the names of 24 authors for its Bal Sahitya Puraskar. Nitin Kushalappa MP has been named the winner of the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for his book of stories in English — Dakshin South Indian Myths and Fables Retold, and Sushil Shukla has won the award for Ek Batey Bara in Hindi. The Bal Sahitya Puraskar will got to Tridib Kumar Chattopadhyay for Bengali, K. Shivalingappa Handihal for Kannada, Nayana Adarkar for Konkani, and Sreejith Moothedath for Malayalam, Vishnupuram Saravanan for Tamil and Gangisetti Sivakumar for Telugu. The winners will receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and an award of ₹50,000 at a special function on a later date.
