Draper survives scare to reach Queen's quarters

PHOTO: JAYNE KAMINE-ONCEA-IMAGN British number one Jack Draper survived a scare to reach the Queen's Club quarter-finals with a gritty 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) win over Australia's Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday. Draper was rocked by the world number 21 in the first set of the second round tie at the Wimbledon warm-up event. But the 23-year-old hit back to level the match before taking the final set tie-break to complete his comeback in a tense encounter lasting two hours and 13 minutes in searing heat in west London. "It was a tough match, credit to Alexei, he played some amazing tennis," Draper said. "In the first couple of sets it wasn't pretty at all, I need time to adjust to the grass but it's one more under the belt. "It's an emotional moment. I love playing at home and in front of my friends and family. I think he's gone to the beer tent but my grandad is here! It's an emotional moment." Draper, who reached the US Open semi-finals last year, is hoping to make a strong run at Wimbledon this year after failing to get past the second round in his previous three appearance. The Londoner has made the last 16 at both the Australian and French Opens this year, rising to sixth in the ATP rankings. If Draper can reach the Queen's semi-finals for the first time after two previous last eight exits, he will be guaranteed to be seeded fourth at Wimbledon when the grass-court Grand Slam gets underway on June 30. After losing the first set against Popyrin, Draper's powerful ground-stroke dragged him level with a double break in the second set. Popyrin clung on valiantly, saving two match points as he served at 4-5 in the final set. In the tie-break he led 4-2, pushing Draper to the brink of a shock defeat. But the Briton delighted the home crowd as he won five of the last six points, clinching the victory with an ace. Earlier on Wednesday, Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut beat Czech eighth seed Jakub Mensik 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Medvedev, who on Thursday edged a first set tiebreak against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, hit three double faults in the second set tiebreak and five overall, compared to no such error by Opelka, who also hit 24 aces. The 2021 U.S. Open champion, currently ranked 11th in the world, needed to match or better Ben Shelton's result in Stuttgart this week to return to Top 10 on Monday. The American, ranked 12th, will beat him to it after he overcame Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4 to advance to the Stuttgart semi-finals. Former Wimbledon junior champion Opelka will contest a an ATP grasscourt semi-final for the second time in his career having reached the same stage at Newport last year. He will face Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal or Belgium's Zizou Bergs on Saturday for a spot in the final. French second seed Ugo Humbert will play Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the other semi. Diallo knocked out third seed Karen Khachanov 7-6(6) 6-4 while the Frenchman eliminated Portuguese Nuno Borges, seeded seventh, 6-1 6-4. In the women's draw, second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova came from a set down to beat Veronika Kudermetova 5-7 6-4 6-2. In the semi-finals, she will face Belgian third seed Elise Mertens, who ousted China's Yue Yuan 6-0 6-4. Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse upset Canadian wildcard Bianca Andreescu 6-2 6-4 and will face Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Kyrgios won't play at Wimbledon due to ‘small setback'
Nick Kyrgios will not play at Wimbledon after experiencing a 'small setback' as he recovers from a knee injury. 'I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year,' Kyrgios posted on social media Tuesday. 'I know how much you've been looking forward to seeing me out there and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever.' The Wimbledon runner-up in 2022 to Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios has dealt with knee and wrist injuries requiring surgery over the past two years. Kyrgios, 30, is 1-4 in singles matches this year, last playing in mid-March at the Miami Open where he lost in the first round, 7-6 (3), 6-0, to Karen Khachanov of Russia. Earlier in March, he retired from his BNP Paribas Open first-round match against the Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp. Not only that, but she's also the first American woman to secure the Roland-Garros title since Serena Williams did so in 2015. It wasn't an easy match for the youngster after losing a tight first set, but she was able to secure the victory thanks to her defense, lob shots and overall smart play. It also helped Gauff that Sabalenka committed 70 unforced errors in a rather uncharacteristic performance. After Gauff bagged the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup — the trophy awarded to the women's singles champion at the French Open since 1979 — fans were quick to crown her and give her a new nickname: the "Queen of Clay." She has four French Open titles to her name, winning the competition in 2020 and for three straight years from 2022 to 2024. Coco Gauff, for her part, is certainly making a case to dethrone Swiatek, though. It should be noted that she's the youngest player to reach 25 wins at Roland-Garros since Martina Hingis in 2000. Gauff probably needs to win consistently in the French Open to become the undisputed "Queen of Clay," but she's definitely on the right track.
