No weather worries for O'Brien as temperatures rise at Ascot
With Royal Ascot baking in the sunshine, and temperatures set to be even hotter for the final two days of the showpiece fixture, Aidan O'Brien has praised all involved in horse welfare this week. And the master of Ballydoyle also allayed any fears the equine athletes on show would find conditions unduly oppressive, despite the mercury rising. O'Brien said: "Horses love heat, it's in their nature and when you are training horses they thrive in the heat and in the cold they don't always try, they don't like the cold weather. "Heat is always an advantage for horses and as long as there is plenty of water at hand, you would prefer it to be warm — if you asked the horse what weather he would like, I would know what he would say. "Ascot do an incredible job and we've had beautiful weather this week. I promise you, if you are training horses you would see the difference. When it's warm horses train better and get bigger and stronger, they eat better and drink better. When it's cold they put all their energy into keeping warm, so it's better it is warm any day." Dr Sally Taylor, head of equine regulation, safety, and welfare for the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), told ITV Racing: "The most important thing to realise is horses are very able to acclimatise to hot weather. When horses sweat it is their primary mechanism of losing heat, as the sweat evaporates it takes with it the heat so that is what you see when a horse sweats at the start. "When they finish racing we are able to mimic that process by applying cold water and creating a breeze. Ascot does a fantastic job, there is iced water available, horses are supervised by vets at all stages of their journey across the racecourse and they have state-of-the-art fans here to create a breeze."

Jockey who won weight in champagne on ITV disqualified for breaking whip rules
Megan Jordan celebrated the biggest victory of her career in the Queen Mother's Cup at York on Saturday but was found to have used her whip too many times A jockey who won her weight in champagne on ITV Racing has been disqualified for breaking the whip rules. The Queen Mother's Cup is one of the most prestigious races in the calendar for female amateur jockeys and a feature of Macmillan Charity Race Day at York. Past winners include the Princess Royal, who rode Insular to victory on the Knavesmire in 1988. Saturday's renewal was contested by 12 runners ridden by some of the best amateur riders on the circuit. The race was won by the Ben Brookhouse-trained My Dream World, ridden by Megan Jordan, who held off the late rally of Chillingham, ridden by Becky Smith. As part of the race's tradition the winning rider is presented with her weight in champagne during a weigh-in on the York podium. During the race Jordan nearly came off when she lost an iron and also managed to catch her whip when it flew out of her hand. She told ITV Racing afterwards: 'It didn't quite go to plan but he's a lovely big horse and that probably helped me stay on. He looked after me when I needed him to. 'I just thought, 'Don't panic', and I was trying to reach down and catch the iron. My stick nearly went at one point but I thought come on and keep going.' She continued: 'This is a race I've really wanted to win. It's only my second ever ride in it. Ben was very confident about him, he gave me a great feel the other day when I went and sat on him. I am very grateful to the connections.' However Jordan's ride was referred to the BHA's Whip Review Committee by stewards who ruled she had struck My Dream World four times above the permitted level of six from approaching two furlongs out. On Tuesday the committee announced: 'Taking into account that none of the uses were clearly and unequivocally for safety purposes, My Dream World was disqualified. 'Miss Jordan will be suspended for 14 days as follows: Friday 04, Saturday 05, Sunday 06, Thursday 10, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23, Thursday 24, Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 June 2025, Wednesday 06 and Thursday 07 August 2025.' The decision to refer Jordan was ridiculed by Jim McGrath, the former Channel 4 Racing pundit who works for Sky Sports Racing. 'Fascinating case for BHA's whip review committee re yesterday's York winner, My Dream World,' he said in a post on X. 'Used 9 times or 10 (heavens to murgatroyd!)? Each feeble tap delivered with all the strength of a junior disprin. Welfare issue- you're having a laugh. Come in Mr Bumble.' Brookhouse said: "We will most likely appeal. We have blown the film up and slowed it down, and there is significant doubt whether one of them connected or not. "Rules are rules, but they were flicks in the backhand position more than smacks in the a young girl who has had a traumatic experience. She said she hit the front too soon and the horses idled on his fifth or sixth start. I don't blame her." Josh Kraft calls out ‘heartbreaking' conditions at Boston Housing Authority
Mayoral candidate Josh Kraft criticized the Boston Housing Authority's handling of maintenance issues at its public housing properties during a press conference Wednesday. Kraft called out a February report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in which inspectors found numerous issues throughout Housing Authority properties. During an appearance at the Authority's Mildred C. Hailey development in Jamaica Plain Wednesday morning, Kraft, the former head of the Boys and Girls Club of Boston and the son of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, called the report 'heartbreaking.' 'What is safe or healthy about broken or missing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors? About electrical hazards or blocked exits?' he said. 'What is dignified about seniors and disabled residents having to climb seven flights of stairs because the elevators in their building do not work?' HUD auditors inspected a sample of 36 units across the BHA system and found 113 'deficiencies,' of which 37 had been present at the time of HUD's last inspection and 18 were categorized as 'life-threatening.' In addition, a survey of 24 BHA buildings found 105 deficiencies in common areas, exteriors, mechanical systems and sites, of which 18 had been present at the last inspection and 31 were life-threatening. Read more: Boston mayor, challenger clash over affordable housing policies The report also found that the BHA had largely failed to respond to maintenance issues in a timely manner, due in large part to a lack of staffing and of oversight of its own inspections, along with a backlog of work orders. In a written response to HUD's findings included in the report, BHA Administrator Kenzie Bok acknowledged that 'there are opportunities for operational improvements and additional quality control' and said the Authority was already working to establish new protocols to address those improvements. Bok explained that because HUD relaxed its inspection requirements for public housing authorities in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when the BHA resumed inspections, it had a major backlog of both work orders and outstanding unit inspections to address. At the same time, according to the report, staffing shortages and COVID infections meant the Authority did not have the resources available to conduct inspections and repairs. Although the agency hired a contractor to help with the inspections, the contractor also experienced delays due to COVID infections among its staff and ultimately withdrew from the contract. On Wednesday, Kraft said he thinks Mayor Michelle Wu cares about issues at BHA housing, but said he questioned if she had the 'management skills' to fix them. 'I've seen up close what housing instability does to a family. You're living in a suitcase. Kids get pulled out of schools,' he said. 'It's not only undignified, it's heartbreaking, and it should never be allowed to happen in a city like Boston.' Multiple BHA properties are currently undergoing significant redevelopment or modernization projects, including its two largest properties, the Mary Ellen McCormack and Charlestown developments. Like other public housing authorities, the BHA gets a significant amount of funds from the federal government. However, as the Trump administration slashes funding across the country, public housing has experienced reductions. Last month, the BHA began sending out letters to landlords of tenants with Section 8 housing vouchers — which are administered by the housing authority — asking them not to raise rents for the next year, citing cuts to the housing assistance program, according to the Boston Globe. Read more: Mass. rental voucher program falls short for many low-income tenants On Wednesday, Kraft acknowledged that the BHA has limited funds to cover the extensive upgrades its properties need. However, he said the city should better prioritize its own money to cover some of those costs, giving the multimillion dollar White Stadium redevelopment as an example of something that Boston is putting too many resources toward. 'There are definitely some places we would need to look and look hard and find savings,' he said. 'But I do know this: I managed multimillion dollar budgets as CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, and when pressed, you can always find savings.' In response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the mayor's office directed MassLive to Wu's campaign team, who did not immediately respond Wednesday afternoon. Horse racing's governing body hit by cyber attack
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has become the latest major organisation to be targeted by a cyber sporting body, which is responsible for the governance, administration and regulation of horse racing, first identified a ransomware incident at the end of last week. Its London office is temporarily closed, and staff have been asked to work from home or remotely. An investigation is still in its early stages, but according to a source, the incident seems limited to internal systems and data.A spokesperson for the BHA said: "We recently identified and began investigating an IT incident. We are working at pace with external specialists to determine what happened in more detail and safely restore our systems. "The delivery of racedays has continued as normal and will continue to do so. We have informed our colleagues, core industry stakeholders and law enforcement." Retailers Marks and Spencer and the Co-op have both recently been affected by cyber incidents with M&S revealing that some personal customer data was stolen.
