Two Retirees Lose Over RM1 Mln To Online Investment Scams
-- Photograph for illustrative purposes GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Two retirees lost over RM1 million after falling victim to online investment scams recently, according to Penang police. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added. He said investigations are ongoing, and both cases are classified under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. GST Not Suitable Now, Would Burden The Poor
LUMUT, June 15 (Bernama) -- The government is not ready to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as it would affect all segments of society, particularly the poor, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said GST is a broad-based tax that would be applied uniformly to all consumers, regardless of income, including fishermen, smallholders, or street cleaners. 'GST taxes everybody. While it is efficient and straightforward, just six per cent across the board, I must ask, if everyone has to pay six per cent, why should the poor and the unemployed be taxed as well?' he said when closing the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 here today. Anwar said that although the opposition has suggested GST as a better option, the government has chosen to postpone its implementation to avoid burdening the people, who are still struggling with the rising cost of living. 'That's why we say we're not ready for GST. If, one day, the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more, then by all means, implement GST. But for now, I'm calling for it to be postponed, don't turn it into a political issue,' he said. Speech For Yab Prime Minister On The Occasion Of The Signing Ceremony Of The Kuala Lumpur Declaration On Asean 2045: Our Shared Future
Today, ASEAN marks a defining chapter in its journey of regional integration with the adoption of ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future. It is often said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. That is what ASEAN has sought to do – through decades of steady effort, shared stewardship and strategic vision. Today, we renew that solemn promise – not as a tribute to the past, but as a living covenant with the future. In 1967, our founding members pledged to 'bind themselves together in friendship and cooperation and, through joint efforts and sacrifices, secure for their peoples and for posterity the blessings of peace, freedom and prosperity.' I record my deep appreciation to all who contributed to this vision, shaped by persistence, pragmatism and the quiet power of regional trust. Your Majesty, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, A decade ago, in this very city, we launched the ASEAN Community Vision 2025. That moment reaffirmed ASEAN's role as an anchor of stability and a rising centre of economic gravity. But today, the international order is unsettled. Geopolitical tensions, economic fragmentation, climate and technological disruption are testing the bonds between nations. The years ahead will be defined by revolutions in technology and science. Our ability to lead – in artificial intelligence, digital innovation and the green and blue economies – will determine not just our prosperity, but our cohesion. Yet these same technologies carry risks. Left unmanaged, they may deepen inequality, displace livelihoods and outpace our rules. We must not only embrace innovation – we must learn to govern it, together, and with care. The future we seek must rest on foundations of sustainability and inclusion. ASEAN's integration must be genuinely people-centred. That means closing development gaps, raising standards of living and investing in the human spirit and potential of all our citizens. Your Majesty, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, This shared blueprint gives shape to that belief. It is a vision anchored in realism, animated by resolve and made possible by trust. As we turn this page, we renew our promise – to our peoples, to our region and to the generations yet to rise. Let us move forward – with clarity in our vision, steadiness in our purpose and unity in our will – to build the ASEAN we owe to the future generations. Thank you. Terima kasih. --BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. Wei Chong-Kai Wun Beat Big Brothers Aaron-Wooi Yik To Claim Malaysia Masters 2025 Title
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- National men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun made amends for their Malaysia Masters 2023 runners-up heartbreak when they stunned compatriots and 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to be crowned as the 2025 edition champions, here, today. Fifth seeds Wei Chong-Kai Wun were in cruise control from the start of the opening set in the battle at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, here, racing to a 6-1 lead. The world number eight then widened the gap to nine points at 20-11, largely due to a string of unforced errors, especially at the net by fourth seeds Aaron-Wooi Yik and closed it out with 21-12. Shaking off early nerves, the world number three Aaron-Wooi Yik unleashed an aggressive display in the second set, surging to an 11-8 lead at the interval and maintaining their momentum to force a deciding set with 21-15. It was a close fight in the early stages of the third set, with both pairs locked at 8-8, but from then on Wei Chong-Kai Wun kept their cool and defended well to thwart their opponents from gaining any real momentum. A thunderous smash from Wei Chong sealed a famous 21-16 victory over their senior compatriots in a 50-minute rubber set battle, making them the first Malaysian pair to win the men's doubles title at the Malaysia Masters since Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah in 2013. Today's victory not only marked their third win in five meetings against Aaron-Wooi Yik, but also their second title of the year, having clinched the Indonesia Masters 2025 by upsetting home favourites Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, 21-11, 21-19, in January. In Malaysia Masters 2023, Wei Chong-Kai Wun emerged as runners-up when they went down fighting 15-21, 24-22, 19-21 to South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae. As Malaysia Masters 2025 champions, Wei Chong-Kai Wun pocketed US$37,525 (approximately RM159,000) prize money while Aaron-Wooi Yik earned US$18,050 (about RM76,000) as runners-up.
