Laptop Scam: BCC appoints special investigation officer;
Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) commissioner Shubha B on Tuesday clarified that she has ordered a detailed investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase and distribution of laptops to SC/ST students. The inquiry follows allegations of inflated pricing and the installation of pirated software on the distributed devices. A month ago, BCC distributed 203 laptops to meritorious SC/ST students using unutilised funds earmarked for the purpose from the past three years, supplemented by grants from the State Finance Commission (SFC). However, Dalit organisations recently staged protests in the city, accusing the corporation of supplying substandard laptops at inflated prices. During the council meeting held on Tuesday, several corporators, including Advocate Hanumant Kongali, Ravi Dhotre, Ramesh Sontakki, and Dinesh Nashipudi, raised concerns about the procurement process. Responding to the allegations, commissioner Shubha B informed the council that a special officer has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation. She added that the laptops distributed to the 10 students were taken back for examination following reports of pirated software being installed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Melhor e mais barato marketing que existe Balinhas Personalizadas Undo Corporators questioned the corporation's payment of Rs 49,000 per laptop, despite the maximum retail price (MRP) on the boxes being Rs 35,000. The investigating officer stated that the local HP distributor was asked to furnish a detailed cost breakdown based on the required specifications. The contractor, according to initial findings, installed Windows and other software for an additional Rs 10,000 — a matter also under scrutiny. Corporators allege misguidance by officials Corporator Hanumant Kongali strongly criticised BCC officials, accusing them of misleading elected representatives and misusing the intended fund. "The amount was meant to offer direct financial assistance to students, not for procuring laptops. Yet, the officials convinced corporators to approve the purchase. This is a serious violation and must be thoroughly investigated," he said. Kongali further highlighted procedural lapses, noting that tenders were floated in Jan, while approval from the Standing Committee on Finance was granted only in March. He called this sequence a 'major blunder' that demands accountability. MLA Abhay Patil also held the officials responsible for misleading the corporators in the case and demanded an inquiry. Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed commissioner Shubha B to table the investigation report before the council upon completion of the probe.

BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile
Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court. Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings. The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction. Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. "At a crucial stage in the process, the officials helped the club management by issuing a notice without filing a caveat, allowing them to easily obtain a stay," alleged Kongali. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The law officer defended the move, stating that efforts are underway to vacate the stay in upcoming hearings. Vega Funmobile faces eviction In another key issue, ruling BJP members demanded action against Vega Funmobile Pvt Ltd for allegedly evading property tax amounting to Rs 7.3 crore. Deputy commissioner Reshma Talikoti confirmed that two notices were already served — the first with a one-month deadline and the second with a one-week notice, ending on June 18. A final 24-hour notice will be issued on Wednesday, following which seizure proceedings will be initiated. Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait suggested exploring a one-time settlement with the company, but officials responded that such an option was no longer available under current rules. Pink Poultry project hangs in balance amid strong opposition
Belagavi: The fate of the much-talked-about Pink Poultry Farm project, planned on the premises of the Turmuri garbage dumpyard by the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC), hangs in the balance amid strong opposition from the local villagers. The residents of Turamuri, who have been protesting for over a decade demanding the relocation of the existing garbage dumpyard, have brought the project to a standstill. The residents have been consistently demanding the relocation of the garbage dumpyard, citing persistent foul odours, an increase in stray dog population, and frequent contamination of well and borewell water in the village. Despite the many long-standing concerns, BCC officials continue to dump waste from Belagavi city in Turamuri. The daily waste generated in the city undergoes processing at Turamuri, and the wet and dry waste is segregated there. Along with this, the BCC intended to run a poultry farm on the same premises, which has been halted by the villagers, along with the local gram panchayat members. Sources said the gram panchayat members also met the women and child welfare minister Laxmi Hebbalkar and submitted a memorandum to stop the work of the Pink Poultry Farm and take steps to relocate the waste dumping yard. The BCC authorities already built a shed to establish the poultry farm with a capacity of around 2,000 birds. There were plans to distribute the eggs produced in this poultry farm among around 1,400 civic workers in the city. According to BCC sources, around 130 tonnes per day (TPD) of wet waste and 80 TPD of dry waste is generated in the city per day. BCC has plans to feed the wet waste to the birds in the poultry farm. Speaking to TOI, Hanumant Kaladagi, environmental engineer in the BCC, said, "The initiative here is modelled after the Pink Poultry project of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. It's a good project and won't harm the residents. However, we have halted the project following their opposition. We will try to convince the villagers and others of the importance of the project," Kaladagi said.

Mt Coot-tha could become world-class eco-tourism hotspot before 2032 Olympics
Brisbane 's Mt Coot-tha could be transformed into a premier eco-tourism destination ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner unveiled a 20-year vision under consideration to put the city's iconic natural attraction on the world stage — capitalising on its prime location just minutes from the CBD. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today The ambitious new master plan is exploring eco-glamping, treetop walks, and an upgraded lookout for the hill beloved by locals and tourists alike, drawing inspiration from global attractions like Singapore's Gardens by the Bay and Canada's Butchart Gardens. 'Basically it's about having more to see and do in a natural environment in Brisbane,' Schrinner said. The potential transformation includes a proposed 170-kilometre wilderness trail stretching from Mt Coot-tha to Mount Archer on the Sunshine Coast, which could connect communities across southeast Queensland, Brisbane City Council (BCC) announced. Visitors could experience upgraded summit lookouts with enhanced views, light shows illuminating the Botanic Gardens, and possible eco-glamping facilities complete with tree walks. The proposed revamp also explores a revitalised Tropical Dome and Planetarium, and upgraded picnic areas with pop-up cafes and food trucks. Plans being considered include turning Sir Samuel Griffith Drive into a one-way loop road, reserving a lane for cyclists. Schrinner emphasised the importance of positioning Mt Coot-tha as a potential key drawcard for international visitors. 'Mt Coot-tha is already loved by locals but with smart planning, we can take it to the world stage,' Schrinner said. The plan aims to explore how to enhance Brisbane's global profile while providing long-lasting benefits to the local community and environment, BCC said. The Brisbane Sustainability Agency has been appointed to lead the master planning process to examine what's possible, though no timeline or budget has been released. When questioned about funding priorities and the Story Bridge restoration on social media, Schrinner clarified the Mt Coot-tha project won't impact other major infrastructure commitments. 'This will be a long-term master plan delivered over many years and won't impact our long-term restoration of the Story Bridge, which we hope can be delivered with the support of all levels of government over the next 15 years, before the bridge turns 100 in 2040,' he said.
