Police appeal after racially aggravated incident
Police are appealing for witnesses following a racially aggravated public order offence outside a train station in Surrey. A man was approached outside Woking Station and a racial slur was allegedly used towards him, police said. A man in his 40s has since been arrested for public order offences, and investigations remain ongoing. The incident happened between 23:00 BST and midnight on Thursday. Travel disruption after lorry hits railway bridge
A section of road in Guildford is closed after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge. The vehicle, travelling westbound on the A25 Midleton Road, hit the bridge at about 06:00 BST on Wednesday. Trains were delayed following the incident but were using the bridge as normal again from 08:00, according to Network Rail. Surrey Police said the westbound carriageway remained closed while officers helped remove the vehicle. Network Rail said it had stopped trains as a precaution to allow for an inspection of the bridge. "We thank passengers for their patience and understanding and apologise for the disruption this incident caused to their journeys," a spokesperson added. Attempted murder arrest after hit-and-run
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and assault following a hit-and-run crash in Surrey. The 37-year-old man from Horley - currently in police custody - was arrested after a silver Mercedes collided with a pedestrian around 17:45 BST on Hornbeam Road in Reigate on 5 June. The pedestrian, a man in his 20s, remains in hospital in a "serious condition", according to Surrey Police. The driver of the car left the scene after the crash, though the vehicle was found by officers later that evening, police said. Surrey Police said they arrested the suspect in London on 8 June. The pair are thought to know each other, the force added. "We understand this was a distressing incident," said Det Insp Gavin Dublin-Cumberbatch, detailing there had been a "significant emergency services presence" on the night of the crash. "Our thoughts are with the family of the injured young man," he added. Officers urged anyone with information or footage that could assist their investigation to get in contact. 'D-Day veterans plaque is a wonderful honour'
A plaque unveiled at Gold Beach in Normandy to remember Surrey's D-Day veterans is a "wonderful honour", the family of one of the late soldiers say. The blue plaque reading "Surrey Square – the spiritual home of all Normandy Veterans", was installed in Arromanches on the French coast to remember those who took part in the Normandy landings on 6 June, 1944. Family members of Surrey's D-Day veterans joined in 81st anniversary commemorations on Friday morning as a bagpiper played to remember the fallen soldiers from the military operation. Ian Allen, whose father-in-law Fred Lee took part in the D-Day landings, said the plaque was a "wonderful honour" for those who fought on the Normandy beaches. He added: "I was fortunate enough to come over with the Surrey Normandy Veterans who used to come here every 6 June. "The plaque all happened very quickly. I do get emotional." Mr Allen, who travelled to Arromanches with his wife Katrina to remember her father and the other Surrey veterans, said he had helped to bring over the former World War Two soldiers to Normandy for previous celebrations. Arromanches' D-Day museum has recently been replaced with a new multi-million euro building, leading to the current memorials being moved. The new plaque was installed alongside the relocated memorials. Mr Allen said that some of the army uniforms of those who had previously travelled over to Normandy were now kept in the new museum, adding he "can't help but be emotional when you walk past that". Cyclists and bikers' road safety campaign launched
A major campaign focusing on the safety of motorcyclists and cyclists is being launched in Surrey. It comes as figures reveal 470 motorbike riders and pillions, along with 351 cyclists, were killed or seriously injured on the county's roads between 2022 and 2024. The Habit for Life campaign by Surrey Roadsafe is targeting all road-users with practical education, advice and tips on how to keep those on two wheels safe. Habit for Life begins on Tuesday and is intended to coincide with the increase in road deaths and injuries during the summer months. A spokesperson said: "These figures have identified a need for greater intervention into the protection of these vulnerable road-user groups, especially around the summer months where peaks in data are evident." The campaign, which is being promoted at public events and social media, encourages people to "adopt habits which could save a life". Surrey Roadsafe is a partnership between the county's police force, county council, fire service and National Highways.
