Harvey Weinstein guilty of sexual assault after New York retrial
Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of sexual assault in a six-week trial in New York, after his first conviction in the state was overturned last year. A panel of seven female and five male jurors deliberated for five days before unanimously voting to convict the disgraced film mogul of one of three counts. The jury found him not guilty of an additional sexual assault charge, and have yet to return a verdict on a charge of rape. The conviction is in addition to a 16-year sentence that Weinstein has yet to serve after being convicted of sex crimes in Los Angeles. Plastic surgeon jailed for trying to kill colleague
A plastic surgeon has been jailed for life for attempting to murder a colleague he wanted "out of the way" because he was a witness against him in disciplinary proceedings. Jonathan Peter Brooks broke into Graeme Perks's home in Halam, Nottinghamshire, in the early hours of 14 January 2021, wearing camouflage gear and armed with a crowbar, cans of petrol, matches and a knife. A trial in Loughborough heard Mr Perks had a "95% chance of dying" after being stabbed by Brooks. Brooks, who was convicted of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a bladed article, was told he would serve at least 22 years in prison. On the night of the attack, Brooks smashed conservatory doors and doused the ground floor of the house with petrol, intending to set it on fire. Mr Perks, a consultant plastic surgeon who had recently retired, was woken by the break-in and initially mistook the defendant for his son, before Brooks stabbed him in the abdomen. The trial previously heard Mr Perks's injuries were "of the most serious type", and included a bleeding liver, injuries to the pancreas and bowel, and an "extremely life-threatening injury" to the back of the abdomen. Brooks appeared via video-link from HMP Norwich after refusing to attend the court in person, having claimed he had a bedsore that meant he would be unable to sit for long periods. The judge said he was informed Brooks was physically fit to attend, and there was no reason he could not. Throughout the hearing, Brooks moved around in his room, occasionally standing from his wheelchair. He was sitting looking towards the camera as his sentence was handed down. Trump speaks with Putin about Ukraine and Iran
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he had a "good conversation" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a call about Ukraine's recent drone attack and Iran. Following Ukraine's major drone attack deep inside Russia, Trump reported that Putin told him Russia "will have to respond". Trump also warned in a social media post that the phone call, which lasted more than an hour, would not "lead to immediate Peace". The two leaders also discussed Iran, and Putin suggested he could help with nuclear talks with the country. The conversation between the two leaders marks the first since Ukraine launched an audacious attack striking Russian air bases on 1 June, targeting nuclear-capable long-range bombers. In his post, Trump said that Putin told him - "very strongly" - that he "will have to respond to recent attacks on the airfields." Last week, Trump appeared to set a two-week deadline for Putin, threatening to change how the US is responding to Russia if he believed Putin was still "tapping" him along on peace efforts in Ukraine. The comment was one of a string of public critical remarks by Trump, who earlier had said that Putin had gone "absolutely crazy" and is "playing with fire" when Russia intensified drone and missile attacks on targets in Ukraine. Trump made no mention of a deadline or his previous remarks in Wednesday's post on his Truth Social platform. This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Family of Boulder suspect arrested by immigration officers
Immigration authorities have arrested the wife and children of the man suspected of carrying out Sunday's attack in Boulder, Colorado, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Tuesday. Mohammed Sabry Soliman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder, assault and possession of an incendiary device after a dozen people were injured at a march calling for the release of Israeli hostages. "We are investigating to what extent his family knew about this heinous attack, if they had knowledge of it, or if they provided support to it," Noem wrote on X. Officials say Mr Soliman shouted "Free Palestine" as he threw two petrol bombs into the crowd. He also faces a federal hate crime charge. Ukraine says at least 40 Russian warplanes hit in massive drone strikes
Ukraine claims to have hit more than 40 Russian warplanes at several military airfields, in what appears to be one of the most audacious drone attacks so far on Russian aviation. According to a statement from Ukraine's security service, SBU, "enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia". The SBU says Ukraine is conducting "a large-scale special operation aimed at destroying enemy bomber aircraft." Dramatic footage has emerged purportedly showing a drone attack at Belaya airbase in Irkutsk oblast, Siberia, thousands of miles from Ukraine. Russia's military has not commented on the issue.
