IIRF 2025: BBAU 19th among top central universities, LU 5th among urban state institutions
LUCKNOW Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has been ranked 19th among the top central universities in India, while the University of Lucknow secured the 5th position nationally in the category of state universities located in urban regions, according to the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025. 'We are immensely proud to be ranked among the top central universities in India by the IIRF,' said prof Raj Kumar Mittal, vice-chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in a press release on Sunday. BBAU has retained its position since last year, underscoring the university's steadfast commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, and holistic student development. The latest IIRF ranking reflects the consistent efforts of its distinguished faculty, talented students, and strong administrative support, he added. Prof Mittal added, 'It is a collective success that motivates us to further elevate our standards and contribute significantly to nation-building through education and innovation.' LU spokesperson Dr Durgesh Kumar Srivastava informed that for the first time, publicly funded state universities (excluding medical and technical institutions) have been included in the IIRF rankings. In this newly introduced category, the University of Lucknow has emerged as the top-ranked university in Uttar Pradesh and secured third position nationally, following Panjab University and Andhra University. The University of Lucknow has excelled across all evaluation parameters, securing an impressive score of 951.62 out of 1000. LU vice-chancellor, Prof Alok Kumar Rai, said, 'This national recognition is a testament to the collective dedication of our faculty, students, and staff. It highlights our consistent commitment to quality education, impactful research, and inclusive academic development. The university remains steadfast in its pursuit of excellence and its contribution to India's higher education landscape.' The IIRF ranking evaluates institutions based on various parameters, including placement performance, teaching learning resources & pedagogy, research (volume, income and reputation), industry income and integration, placement strategies & support, future orientation, and external perception & international outlook. In addition to this IIRF ranking, BBAU also holds the 33rd rank among the top universities in India according to the NIRF 2024 ranking.

24 new courses at BBAU from this academic session
Lucknow: Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) will offer around 24 new undergraduate, postgraduate diploma and certificate courses from the upcoming academic session with the aim to equip students with modern technical skills, professional knowledge and a research-oriented approach. The new session is likely to begin in Aug. It includes industry-oriented PG diploma courses like social media marketing, film and theatre acting and editing, certificate courses in bakery and confectionery, a diploma course in cognitive neuroscience among others. "Newly introduced courses have been designed in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and professional requirements. The launch of these courses will follow a well-structured strategy," said vice-chancellor Prof Raj Kumar Mittal. He said these new courses especially include skill-based programmes focused on providing employment-oriented and professional training. Retired experts from relevant fields will be invited to contribute, enabling students to gain real-world experience. Furthermore, the university will introduce integrated UG programmes that offer multidisciplinary education under one roof. A BBAU official said: "Our department of journalism and mass communication will be offering PG diploma in social media, film and theatre acting and editing, design and graphics and in corporate communication, certificate course in radio jockey and video jockey (RJ & VJ). These courses are not being offered as specialised courses by any academic institutions in the city." Courses like PG diploma in manuscriptology to be offered by the department of library and information science will provide training in the study of handwritten documents, encompassing their preservation, editing and interpretation. Another interesting course to be offered is a one-year diploma in post-harvest technology for horticultural crops. "The admission process for various postgraduate (PG) programmes for the 2025-26 session has begun. Eligible candidates seeking admission can register on the official website-- The registration process commenced on May 24 and the last date for application is June 18," said the VC. Male PhD student accuses BBAU professor of sexual exploitation
Lucknow: A male PhD student at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has accused a professor of sexual harassment. The scholar submitted a complaint to the vice-chancellor demanding action against the professor. Refuting allegations, the professor also submitted a letter to the vice-chancellor, requesting that a committee should be formed to investigate "false claims". In his complaint, the scholar alleged that the professor used to show him pornographic material whenever he visited his room for work and asked him to perform inappropriate actions. The scholar claimed that when the professor sexually harassed him, he threatened to complain to the vice-chancellor, at which the professor threatened to terminate his PhD. The scholar threatened to commit suicide if the university failed to act against the professor. He demanded that a complaint should be registered with the university's internal complaint committee and an FIR be lodged against the professor. I strongly deny this baseless allegation. This false complaint, I believe, is a deliberate attempt to coerce and force me to approve academic and procedural violations that contravene the PhD Regulation 2016 (Amended 2019)," said the professor's letter (TOI has a copy of the letter). He said that since he regularly reported academic irregularities, such as unsigned six-monthly progress reports and incomplete PhD documentation, to the university administration since Oct 15, 2024, false allegation was levelled against him. BBAU, AKTU and DSMNRU open registration portals for admissions
The city-based universities have opened their registration portals for admission to various courses for the session 2025-26. Thus the students aspiring to get admissions could easily access the details on the portals of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Dr. Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) and APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) which have started the registration process. At BBAU, the portal for admissions to postgraduate courses has been opened and the registration forms are available for ₹500 for general, OBC and EWS category while it is ₹300 for SC, ST and People with Disabilities. 'The last date of submission without late fee is June 18 while the last date of form submission with late fee of ₹1000 is June 24. As part of PG admission as many as 2,579 seats will be filled,' said chairperson Admission-cum-Monitoring Committee BBAU, Amit Kumar Singh. He said the portal for undergraduate courses will be opened soon after the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) results are announced. At DSMNRU, registration for both UG and PG courses has been started. 'We are holding admissions to UG and PG courses based on CUET. The forms for UG and PG courses are available for ₹200 and ₹100 for general and for people with disabilities respectively. Admission to certificate and diploma courses and Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics will be conducted on a non-CUET basis and the forms are available for ₹800 and ₹400 for general and for people with disabilities respectively. The last date for submission of forms is June 28,' said spokesperson DSMNRU, Prof Yashwant Virodai. At AKTU, admission will be conducted based on JEE, CUET and class 12 results for UG courses and GATE, CUET PG and Institute level examination for PG courses. 'The admission forms for BTech courses have been started online while other courses will be started soon. Admission forms will be available for ₹1,000 for both UG and PG courses,' said dean admissions AKTU, OP Singh.

BBAU cyclingevent upholds fit lifestyle
Lucknow: The enthusiasm displayed by the teachers and staff of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) during the cycling event transformed the university campus into a vibrant hub of fitness activities on Sunday. "The cycling campaign highlighted the importance of sustainable transportation and its role in reducing air pollution. Participants were briefed about proper cycling techniques, safety measures and benefits of making cycling a regular part of their routine," said BBAU spokesperson Prof Rachna Gangwar. She said the event also featured informative sessions about maintaining bicycles and choosing appropriate cycling gear. This initiative is part of the nationwide 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' movement launched by the ministry of youth affairs and sports, aiming to promote regular cycling as a mean to adopt a healthier lifestyle and raise environmental awareness. The programme concluded with a commitment from Vice-Chancellor Prof RK Mittal and the university community to embrace cycling not just as a Sunday activity but as a regular mode of transport.
