Man arrested over homeopathy scam that duped single mother
BESUT: Police have arrested a man to assist with investigations into a scam in which a single mother lost RM52,000 after being lured into investing in a homeopathy-based business. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 40-year-old suspect was detained at his home in Machang, Kelantan, at 3.20pm yesterday. The arrest followed a report lodged by a 43-year-old woman who claimed she was duped by the man over a homeopathy business deal yesterday. "According to her statement, the unemployed victim met the suspect on the MiChat application in early March last year. "During their acquaintance, the suspect invited the victim to invest in a homeopathy-based business, to which she agreed. "She made three separate payments — RM25,000, RM20,000 and RM7,000 — on different dates and at different locations," he said. Azamuddin added that the payments were made as a business deposit, full investment, product purchase, and promotional materials. However, the suspect later claimed there were issues with the business arrangement as promised to the victim on Aug 26 last year. "The woman grew suspicious and asked for purchase receipts, but the suspect failed to provide any," he said.

Chinese tourist drowns while swimming off Pulau Perhentian
BESUT: A female Chinese tourist is believed to have drowned while swimming off Pulau Perhentian yesterday. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said they received a report on the incident at 1.45pm. Azamuddin said the victim had arrived in Malaysia with her cousin and had been staying at a hotel on the island since June 3. "A preliminary investigation found the 33-year-old victim went to the beach with her cousin at around 11am," he said in a statement today. "She then swam alone and did not return to the shore. After about 30 minutes, her cousin began searching for her and was informed by members of the public that the victim had been found floating unconscious in a rocky area," he said. The victim was brought to shore by members of the public before police were contacted. "A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death was drowning. The case has been classified as sudden death," he said. Azamuddin reminded visitors to recreational areas to be more cautious and to always prioritise their safety and that of their families. "Safety measures should always be taken to avoid any untoward incidents," he said.

Wireman nabbed for robbing Jertih convenience store
JERTIH: A wireman was nabbed 45 minutes after robbing a 24-hour convenience store in Bandar Jertih here on Saturday (May 24). Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 21-year-old suspect was caught when he returned to the scene of the crime to retrieve his abandoned motorcycle at 5.45am, when a store employee apprehended and handed him over to the police. "In the incident, the suspect wearing a dark-tinted visor helmet and a mask entered the store and threatened a 30-year-old male employee with a knife. "The suspect demanded the over RM500 from the cash register. As the suspect fled the scene, the employee gave chase, causing the suspect to abandon his parked motorcycle," he said at a press conference on Sunday (May 25). Azamuddin said the suspect returned to the store at 6.30 am in different clothing to deceive the employee and retrieve the motorcycle belonging to his father, but instead was caught. Stolen cash, equipment and a motorcycle used in the crime, including 4.26 grammes of Epam (nitrazepam) pills were recovered by police. "Urine tests found the suspect positive for morphine. He has no prior criminal record and has been remanded for seven days starting today", he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code, along with Section 12(2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - Bernama

Afraid of husband, woman lodges false report over 'stolen' jewellery
BESUT: A housewife filed a false police report claiming her jewellery was snatched, out of fear of being scolded by her husband. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the woman, in her 30s, lodged the report about 3.39pm yesterday. He said the district police's Criminal Investigation Division received a report of a robbery involving two motorcycle-riding suspects armed with a knife. In her report, the woman claimed the incident occurred in a secluded area of Kampung Hutan Nangka, Jertih. "She alleged the suspects stopped her, threatened her with a knife, and fled with her jewellery," he said, adding that the loss was estimated at RM7,000 and no injuries were reported. However, investigations found that no such robbery took place. "She later admitted to lending the jewellery to a friend who could no longer be contacted. Fearing her husband's reaction, she made up the story," he said. Azamuddin said the woman was not arrested, as the offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code is non-arrestable and requires an Order to Investigate (OTI). The case is being probed under Section 182 for providing false information with intent to cause a public servant to misuse lawful authority—a charge that carries up to six months' jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. He reminded the public not to lodge false reports or spread misinformation, as legal action could be taken.
