Smiths legend backs Kneecap and calls for a free Palestine

It comes amid calls for the Belfast band's upcoming set at the Glastonbury music festival to be censored Legendary guitarist Johnny Marr has become the latest star to offer his support to Kneecap. It comes amid calls for the Belfast band's upcoming set at the Glastonbury music festival to be censored. Taking to social media, the former Smiths musician said in a statement that 'after learning that calls have been made for Kneecap to be censored during their Glastonbury set', he thought it was important to make his position on the issue clear. 'I've played Glastonbury many times and the festival has always had a political aspect,' the 61-year-old said. 'It was founded as a place of free expression and political activism, and it's a fact that I agreed to play there with the Smiths in 1984 purely because to do so at the time was a political act. 'We are living through very troubling times, but for anyone who's been interested in me or my music over the last 40 years, I feel like my political stance has always been very clear,' he continued. 'Oppression fears artistic expression. I respect all musicians who use their platform to speak out against injustice, who promote compassion and equality and give voice to the voiceless. 'I stand with my audience and fellow musicians who call for an immediate end to the atrocities and a free Palestine.' Kneecap are set to perform at the British festival at the West Holts Stage on Saturday, June 28. Earlier this month, the BBC confirmed it would not remove the band from its coverage of the festival. However, they were removed from Scotland's TRNSMT festival this July following safety concerns from police. Band member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh is set to appear in court after police in the UK charged him with a terrorism offence after he allegedly displayed a flag in support of Lebanese organisation Hezbollah last year. The rapper, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, has denied the charge, calling it "political policing" and "a carnival of distraction" away from Gaza. He said the charge is an attempt to stop him from 'speaking at Glastonbury.' 'There's a reason why what's happened to me happened before Glastonbury. Members of Kneecap, Liam Og O Hannaigh (Mo Chara), JJ O'Dochartaigh (DJ Provai) and Naoise O Caireallain (Moglai Bap) attending the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards Ceremony (Brian Lawless/PA) 'There's a reason they're trying to f**king stop me speaking at Glastonbury in front of the UK.' Fellow Irish musician and Kneecap collaborator Grian Chatten branded the charges against Ó hAnnaidh a witch hunt. 'It's a categorical witch hunt, and that's fairly plain to see to anyone who has a discerning eye,' he told The Irish Times. 'I stand by their side, and I'm totally unafraid to do so. I think all of us are.' The group have garnered international headlines since their performance at Coachella in April. Johnny Marr News in 90 Seconds - June 17 They faced controversy after they displayed a message reading 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. It is being enabled by the U.S. government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes. F**k Israel, Free Palestine,' on stage following their set at the music festival. The performance led to calls for the group to be banned from performing in the United States

Kneecap's legal team for court battle to include Julian Assange lawyer

Rapper O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, will be represented by a team that includes Gareth Peirce, solicitor for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange during his fight against US extradition, and Rosalind Comyn, who has represented Extinction Rebellion protesters in court. The 27-year-old was charged by postal requisition over the alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a gig at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, in November last year. His legal team also includes Darragh Mackin from Phoenix Law, Brenda Campbell KC, Jude Bunting KC and Blinne Ni Ghralaigh KC. Mr Mackin was the solicitor for Sarah Ewart, whose successful legal challenge helped to usher in the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland, while Ms Campbell was the defence barrister in the collapsed case against Seamus Daly, who was accused of murdering people in the IRA bomb attack of 1998 in Omagh. Mr Bunting acted for non-profit company Liberty in the Stansted 15's successful conviction appeal after they broke into Stansted Airport to stop a plane deporting people to Africa, which was a case Ms Ni Ghralaigh also worked on. In an Instagram post the group said: 'The British establishment is conducting a campaign against Kneecap which is to be fought in Westminster Magistrates Court… We are ready for this fight. We are proud to have such a strong legal team with us.' Mr Mackin told the PA news agency: 'It is difficult to comprehend a case of greater international importance in recent years. 'Kneecap has played an unrivalled role in standing up for those without a voice in Gaza. They speak truth to power when others shy away. 'It is a great privilege to be instructed alongside my colleagues to defend the important principle of freedom of expression, in the pending battle before the London Court.' In May, the Metropolitan Police said Kneecap were being investigated by counter-terrorism police after videos emerged allegedly showing the band calling for the deaths of MPs and shouting 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'. Members of Kneecap, Liam Og O Hannaigh (Mo Chara), JJ O'Dochartaigh (DJ Provai) and Naoise O Caireallain (Moglai Bap) attending the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards Ceremony (Brian Lawless/PA) They apologised to the families of murdered MPs but said footage of the incident had been 'exploited and weaponised'. They also said they have 'never supported' Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. In 2024, the band released an eponymous film starring Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender which is a fictionalised retelling of how the band came together and follows the Belfast group on their mission to save their mother tongue through music. Formed in 2017, the group, made up of O hAnnaidh, Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh, are known for their provocative lyrics and merchandise as well as their championing of the Irish language. Their best-known tracks include Get Your Brits Out, Better Way To Live, featuring Grian Chatten from Fontaines DC, and 3Cag. O hAnnaidh is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. His lawyers have been approached for comment.

Newcastle detective who investigated buck's weekend gang rape awarded

The Newcastle detective who led the investigation into a gang rape during a buck's weekend has been recognised at the district's annual awards. Detective Sergeant Michael Keegan said the months-long and complex case was "confronting but ultimately rewarding" as the three offenders were put behind bars last year. Maurice Hawell, 30, Marius Hawell, 23, and Andrew David, 30, were all found guilty of sexual assault in a joint four-week trial in July 2024. The trio raped the three women, who cannot be legally identified, over two consecutive days in February 2022 during a buck's weekend at a rented Airbnb in Newcastle ahead of Maurice Hawell's wedding. "The bravery shown by those three women: incredible," Mr Keegan said. "It showed incredible bravery to come forward and tell us what happened to them and go through that process." For his role in the investigation, Detective Sergeant Keegan was awarded the District Commander's Citation at the Newcastle City Police District Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 11. The detective was acknowledged for his instrumental leadership in the successful prosecution of the case which involved covert tactics and detailed enquiries to identify the multiple victims and perpetrators. Detective Sergeant Keegan said he felt it was important to recognise the contributions of the whole team. "It's not just the team that worked on the job but the team on the floor who picked up extra night shifts, extra weekend shifts and extra jobs because we were focusing on that," he said. After 21 years in the police force, Detective Sergeant Keegan said being able to deliver a good result for victims and their families made it worthwhile. "It's also nice to just take a moment to acknowledge the families because of none of this happens without support from my wife and kids," he said. Mr Keegan was also acknowledged with a District Commander's Citation for his part in Strike Fore Millstream, targeting the importation of border-controlled drugs, the supply of prohibited drugs and money laundering offences. Sergeant Emma Spencer was awarded a Region and District Commander's Commendation for successfully disarming a man with a knife. The man had been brandishing the knife towards police when she transitioned from a firearm to a taser to achieve a peaceful outcome, she said. "I've been in the police force for 20-odd years now, so we are often affronted and faced with many jobs similar to this, and it is nice to be recognised on this occasion," she said. "I joined to be able to protect and serve the community. The mateship and the camaraderie with the other police also keeps me going." Commander of the Newcastle City Police District Superintendent Steven Benson said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the good work of the NSW police "It's a fantastic opportunity for family, friends and the community to see and hear stories of what they do on duty," he said.
