IAC welcomes Telangana's move to promote auto LPG, Urges nationwide adoption for clean Mobility
Hyderabad, June 11 (UNI) The Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) on Wednesday welcomed Telangana government's decision to include Auto LPG as an approved fuel for 40,000 new eco-friendly autos within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits of Hyderabad. This forward-thinking move is set to significantly reduce vehicular emissions in the city and marks a crucial step towards cleaner urban air, IAC said in a release. As India strives to tackle rising air pollution and achieve its climate goals, it is imperative to utilize the full spectrum of clean fuels available. Embracing a diverse mix of alternative fuels—including Auto LPG, CNG, electricity, and biofuels—will not only accelerate the transition to clean mobility but also enhance the nation's energy security, provide consumers with more choices, and ensure a practical, scalable approach to reducing emissions across the country. Mr. Suyash Gupta, Director General of Indian Auto LPG Coalition, said, "Telangana government's decision to include Auto LPG as an eco-friendly fuel is a positive and timely move in India's fight against rising urban pollution. Including Auto LPG in alternative fuel policies not only helps reduce harmful vehicular emissions but also strengthens India's overall energy security by diversifying our fuel mix. Auto LPG is a proven, cost-effective, and readily available solution that can deliver immediate improvements in air quality, especially in our most polluted cities. We urge other states and the central government to adopt similar policies, ensuring that clean fuel options like Auto LPG are accessible to millions of vehicle owners nationwide." On a related note, the IAC had also acknowledged the recent move by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to restrict the addition of new diesel and petrol vehicles to e-commerce and aggregator fleets in the Delhi-NCR region from January 1 next year. Such decisive action is a significant milestone in India's journey towards clean mobility and reflects a strong commitment to addressing the rising pollution issues in one of the country's most critical regions. "To achieve even more impactful and immediate results in curbing air pollution, it is essential that more OEMs start offering LPG variants and that the retrofitment is actively encouraged as well across the nation. With over 33crore petrol and diesel vehicles already on our roads, an outright ban or phase-out is simply not feasible in the short term. By incentivizing and streamlining retrofitment to cleaner fuels like Auto LPG, we can rapidly convert millions of existing vehicles into low-emission alternatives. Auto LPG is not only cost-effective for consumers but also delivers substantial reductions in harmful emissions, making our cities healthier and our air cleaner. We urge policymakers to complement this progressive fleet policy with robust support for retrofitment initiatives, ensuring a practical, sustainable, and inclusive transition to clean mobility for India's vast vehicle population," he added. Telangana greenlights Auto LPG for 40,000 new autorickshaws in Hyderabad
In a major boost to India's clean mobility transition , the Telangana government has approved the inclusion of Auto LPG as an authorised fuel for 40,000 new eco-friendly autorickshaws within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits of Hyderabad. The move has been welcomed by the Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) as a significant step toward reducing vehicular emissions and improving urban air quality . The IAC described the decision as a forward-thinking intervention in India's ongoing fight against air pollution and a timely recognition of Auto LPG's potential in a diverse clean-fuel ecosystem. Auto LPG Gains Policy Traction in Telangana Speaking on the development, Suyash Gupta, Director General of IAC, said, 'Telangana government's decision to include Auto LPG as an eco-friendly fuel is a positive and timely move in India's fight against rising urban pollution. Including Auto LPG in alternative fuel policies not only helps reduce harmful vehicular emissions but also strengthens India's overall energy security by diversifying our fuel mix.' Auto LPG, already widely used in several countries, is recognised for being a cost-effective and readily available fuel that offers immediate reductions in harmful vehicular emissions such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter. The IAC emphasised that such policies can deliver fast and scalable results, particularly in urban areas struggling with poor air quality. Call for Wider Adoption and OEM Support While welcoming the Telangana move, the IAC also urged other state governments and the Centre to follow suit by formally including Auto LPG in their clean fuel frameworks. The Coalition pointed out that embracing a broad mix of alternative fuels—CNG, electricity, biofuels, and Auto LPG— is essential for an inclusive and effective transition to sustainable mobility. With over 33 crore petrol and diesel vehicles currently on Indian roads, the IAC argued that an outright ban or phase-out of ICE vehicles is unrealistic in the short term. Instead, incentivising retrofitment to cleaner fuels like Auto LPG offers a practical and consumer-friendly path toward emissions reduction. Alignment with National Policy Developments The IAC also applauded the recent move by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to restrict the addition of new petrol and diesel vehicles in e-commerce and aggregator fleets in the Delhi-NCR region starting January 1, 2026. This policy shift aligns with the broader national goal of reducing emissions from fleet-based operations, especially in pollution hotspots. The Indian Auto LPG Coalition reiterated its commitment to working with governments and industry stakeholders to promote fuel diversity and clean transportation. It called on all policymakers to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fuel solutions, particularly in high-density urban centres where the air quality crisis is most severe.

Indian Auto LPG Coalition urges push for clean fuel policy
As World Environment Day nears, the Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) has reiterated its appeal to the government to expedite clean fuel policies. The coalition has highlighted Auto LPG's role as a viable alternative to reduce vehicular emissions , which remain a major source of air pollution in Indian cities. With over 33 crore vehicles running on petrol and diesel, the IAC stressed that vehicular emissions continue to be a significant contributor to air pollution. Auto LPG, which powers around 2.4 million vehicles in India and over 27 million globally, is being positioned as a low-emission alternative requiring minimal infrastructure changes. 'India stands at a fundamental crossroads in its battle against air pollution and climate change,' said Suyash Gupta, Director General of the Indian Auto LPG Coalition. 'With over 33 crore petrol and diesel vehicles on our roads, an outright ban or phase-out is simply not feasible in the short term. By incentivising and streamlining retrofitment to Auto LPG, we can convert millions of vehicles into clean, low-emission alternatives almost overnight.' He added that Auto LPG can offer operational cost savings and reductions in carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter emissions compared to conventional fuels. Policy support and retrofitment appeal The IAC has urged policymakers to prioritise clean fuel solutions and support large-scale retrofitment initiatives . It has also called for the inclusion of Auto LPG in India's clean fuel narrative and urged OEMs to offer more Auto LPG variants. Additionally, the coalition has asked the government to lower the GST on conversion kits from 28% to 5% to make retrofitting more accessible. Citing international examples, the coalition noted that countries such as Ukraine, Poland, Korea, and Russia have successfully integrated Auto LPG into their transport systems with supportive policy measures. The coalition's statement comes amid reports that the government may consider phasing out pure petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR. Given the scale of the current vehicle fleet, the IAC argues that retrofitting existing vehicles with Auto LPG offers a practical and timely solution. 'This World Environment Day, it's crucial for policymakers to champion clean fuel solutions and support large-scale retrofitment initiatives that can make our cities cleaner, safer, and more sustainable,' Gupta added.
