BYD's swift ascent challenges EV rivals in Korean market

Chinese brand tops all EV importers except for Tesla in May BYD is looking to shake up Korea's electric vehicle sector as the Chinese EV behemoth has become the second-largest EV seller among the 15 auto importers in the country with just a single model on offer. According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association's data on Sunday, BYD sold 513 units of the Atto 3, a battery-powered compact sport utility vehicle, in May. This tops some of the strongest players here, such as BMW with 493 EVs sold, Mercedes-Benz with 145 EVs sold and even EV-only brand Polestar with 455 units sold. Tesla retained its No. 1 EV importer status here with 6,570 units sold. BYD's Atto 3 even took the title of the most sold EV import model in April, with 543 units sold after the Chinese brand cleared some regulatory hurdles to carry out full-scale customer delivery. Tesla's Model Y Long Range and Model 3 Long Range came in at the second and third place, respectively, with 533 and 350 units sold. BYD Korea's early success came as a somewhat surprise, as auto industry watchers expected the Chinese brand to have a limited impact on the EV market in Korea due to local customers' negative sentiment towards made-in-China products. The Korea Automobile and Mobility Association predicted in a report released in December, ahead of BYD's official passenger vehicle launch in Korea, that the Chinese brand would have a tough time in the early days as it struggled to win the hearts of customers in Japan after selling only about 3,000 units since its entrance there in 2023. However, BYD has been able to attract those who seek a more affordable EV with the starting price of the Atto 3 set at 31.5 million won ($23,000), which is significantly cheaper than the prices of other EVs in the same segment such as Hyundai Motor's Kona Electric and Kia's EV3 priced at 41.52 million won and 39.95 million won, respectively. Despite expectations that most of the Atto 3 will be sold as company-owned vehicles for taxi or rental services, about 77 percent of the BYD purchases were individual buyers. According to BYD Korea, of the customers who bought the Atto 3 in April, 20 percent were aged in their 20s and 30s, 30 percent were in their 40s, 32 percent were in their 50s and 18 percent were in their 60s. BYD plans to more than double the number of service centers and showrooms to reach 25 and 30, respectively, by the end of this year to expand its network in Korea for better customer care. The Chinese brand's Korean office is expected to launch the Seal, a midsized electric sedan, in the third quarter and the Sealion 7, a midsized electric SUV, towards the end of this year. 'BYD Korea will do its best to grow the domestic EV market by continuously launching new vehicles with high marketability that can satisfy a broad customer base while offering an optimized service environment,' said Cho In-chul, head of the passenger car division at BYD Korea.

2025 BYD Atto 2 small electric SUV confirmed for Australia

The 2025 BYD Atto 2 has been confirmed for Australian showrooms, where smallest and most affordable electric SUV offered here by the Chinese automaker so far will arrive in the fourth quarter of this year. BYD Australia – which will take over local distribution of the brand from independent importer EVDirect next month – has announced the compact five-seat Atto 2 electric SUV will be offered here with a single electric powertrain and two model grades. Launched in China in March 2024, the BYD Atto 2 is sold under other names overseas, including Atto 3 Up, Yuan Pro and S1 Pro. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. It will be sold in Australia as the Atto 2 to underline its positioning, in terms of both size and price, below the brand's pioneering Atto 3 electric SUV with which it shares its platform, and will be aimed at rivals including the Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric. "As an SUV, the Atto 2 is very important," Sajid Hasan, BYD Australia senior product planning manager, told CarExpert. "What we've seen is that there's been a shifting of passenger cars to SUVs. What the hatch segment used to be has flowed into the small SUV segment, and then you got a lot of cross-pollination between the medium SUV segment and light SUV segments." SUVs have accounted for 59.8 per cent of all new vehicle sales so far this year in Australia – not including Tesla and Polestar sales, which are reported separately. Led by the Hyundai Kona, the small SUV segment the Atto 2 will enter for BYD made up the third-largest chunk (6.4 per cent) of the new vehicle market, behind mid-size SUVs and just a few sales behind 4×4 utes. "This small SUV segment being a very large portion of the total market composition, volume-wise, is just an enormous growth opportunity for us to grow our brand and our volume," Mr Hasan said. While pricing is yet to be confirmed, the Atto 2 should be cheaper than the mid-size Atto 3, which starts from $39,990 before on-road costs – making it considerably more affordable than the new Kia EV3's $48,990 starting price. The Hyundai Kona Electric is priced from $54,000 before on-road costs. In China, the Atto 2 starts at ¥96,800 (A$20,835), which is less than the BYD Dolphin hatchback (¥99,800 or A$21,480) that's currently priced from $29,990 drive-away in Australia. Based on its specs in China – where it is called the BYD Yuan Up – the Atto 2 measures 4310mm long, 1830mm wide and 1675mm high, making it 145mm shorter than the Atto 3. However, it's larger than light SUVs such as the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Qashqai – and the electric Jeep Avenger – but not as big as Australia's most popular SUVs, like the mid-size Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. Indeed, the Atto 2 has a 400-litre boot, which expands to 1370L of space with the second row folded. In China, the Atto 2 is offered with a single electric motor mounted to the front axle, with the choice of 70kW and 130kW power outputs. BYD Australia confirmed the 130kW/290Nm version will be standard here, and available in both 'Essential' and 'Premium' trim grades when it arrives Down Under. The Australian-spec Atto 2 will also have a 51.13kWh Lithium Ion Phosphate (LFP) 'Blade' battery and, while no driving range has been confirmed, it's larger than the 32kWh and 45.1kWh battery capacities available overseas, which enable a WLTP range of 312km. BYD Australia has confirmed few other specs, but the Atto 2 will have flush door-handles and a panoramic sunroof as standard, outside a cabin including synthetic leather seat trim and 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. Essential versions will feature a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen, while the Premium grade will gain a 12.8-inch screen and a 360-degree surround camera. BYD has ambitious expansion plans, including a goal of exports accounting for half its global sales by 2030, which would be a significant achievement given the brand is not present in the US, the world's second largest auto market behind China. The brand was officially launched in Australia in 2022 under EVDirect, whose chief told CarExpert as recently as January this year that BYD plans to outsell long-time local market leader Toyota by 2027. EVDirect previously said BYD had ambitious plans to sell 100,000 vehicles per annum in Australia by 2026, by doubling its sales and launching up to five new models annually. Last year BYD sold 20,458 vehicles in Australia, where Toyota sold 241,296. China's BYD to nearly triple South Africa dealers' network by next year

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD plans to nearly triple its dealership network in South Africa by next year as it looks to grow its market share in the country, a senior executive told Reuters. BYD's move comes at a time of growing competition in Africa's largest automotive market, where sales of new energy vehicles are rising and other Chinese companies - such as GAC, Chery and GWM - are also making inroads. Launched in 2023, with its BYD battery electric Atto 3 vehicle, the automaker has about 13 dealerships. "By the end of the year, we will have about 20 dealerships around the country. The aim is to expand that to about 30, 35 the next year," Steve Chang, general manager of BYD Auto South Africa told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. BYD currently offers six models in the South African market, with its plug-in hybrid Shark pick-up, hybrid Sealion 6, and pure electric Sealion 7 SUV models launched in April, completing its hybrid and electric dual-powertrain strategy. The dealership expansion will help BYD become a fairly well-known brand and capture more buyers across a country that is slowly transitioning to electrified vehicles. In 2024, sales of new energy vehicles - a term that describes battery-powered fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars - rose to 15,611 units from 7,782 units in 2023, according to data from the automotive industry body Naamsa. While the share of NEVs to total car sales is still low, BYD is hoping to capture the market early on, in preparation for a meaningful transition, Chang said. "We want to educate and cultivate the market of South Africa and make sure that the South African consumers can catch up with the rest of the world," Chang added. The uptake of electric vehicles and investment in Africa is quite slow relative to emerging market peers due to limited charging infrastructure, unstable power supply and high import duties compared to fossil-fuelled cars. But BYD sees potential. "South Africa is actually one of the most important automotive markets in the Southern Hemisphere. It's probably the biggest market in all of Africa, so it's a market that we have to look at and see how we can develop the market," Chang said. All rights reserved. © 2022. Australia's EV sales race gets a jolt as surprising new entry knocks off a Tesla

The Tesla Model Y was unsurprisingly Australia's best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in May, but a surprising new nameplate claimed third place. Another mid-size electric SUV, the Geely EX5 notched up 511 deliveries in May, placing it behind only the Kia EV5 (703 deliveries) and Model Y, which found a whopping 3580 new homes. Not only did the new Chinese electric SUV, launched earlier this year, surpass the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan (317) – typically Australia's second best-selling EV – it also managed to outsell a raft of other popular EVs. The EX5 narrowly beat the similarly new BYD Sealion 7 mid-size SUV (488), and there was significant daylight between it and BYD's Seal sedan (355), Dolphin hatch (345) and Atto 3 medium SUV (322), as well as the MG 4 hatch (319). Last month the EX5 even managed to outsell various combustion-powered mid-size SUVs such as the MG HS (277) and Honda CR-V (494). Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. To the end of May, Geely has delivered 1023 examples of its EX5 this year. It's still behind the rival Sealion 7 (1961), of which first deliveries were recorded a month earlier than the EX5's in February, and just below the Atto 3 (1278). It's also being outsold by the Model Y (6974) and Model 3 (2583), while the Kia EV5 is continuing to sell strongly since launching last year and is sitting at 2212 deliveries year-to-date. But the EX5 has swiftly dispatched fellow Chinese rivals like the Leapmotor C10, of which 178 electric versions have been delivered so far this year. Deepal has recorded only 67 deliveries of its S07 thus far this year, but there's a caveat here – the auto brand only started reporting its sales figures in monthly VFACTS reports in May, despite first customer deliveries commencing last December. The EX5 is sharply priced, starting at $40,990 before on-road costs, but Geely is further sweetening the pot with various end of financial year (EOFY) incentives. It's now available with a 3.88 per cent finance comparison rate, while Geely is offering either a $2000 gift card or five years of complimentary scheduled servicing until June 30, 2025. Additionally, those who buy an EX5 before June 30 will receive a complimentary mode 2 charging cable, and Geely is also offering a $2000 trade-in bonus. Geely is far from the only brand extending sharp EOFY deals. Deepal, for example, is offering its S07 for $49,990 drive-away until June 30, a saving of around $8000 when comparing drive-away prices in New South Wales. But Geely is moving quickly to establish itself in Australia, having previously confirmed it plans to have over 20 dealerships in Australia by mid-year and planning to launch more than six new models over the next three years. They are expected to include a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sibling to the EX5, which has already been spied testing in Australia. Geely already had a presence in Australia before relaunching its namesake brand nationwide this year (some Geely models were previously available via an independent importer in Western Australia) , as the Chinese automaker also owns brands including Lotus, Polestar, Volvo and Zeekr. Geely already had a presence in Australia before relaunching its namesake brand nationwide this year (some Geely models were previously available via an independent importer in Western Australia) , as the Chinese automaker also owns brands including Lotus, Polestar, Volvo and Zeekr. MORE: Everything Geely EX5 Content originally sourced from: The Tesla Model Y was unsurprisingly Australia's best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in May, but a surprising new nameplate claimed third place.
