Local 7-year-old gets ‘new lease on life' after new gene therapy
A 7-year-old from Gastonia became the first child in the area to get a new gene therapy at Atrium Health after not even being able to stand on his own just a few months ago. Lucas Solano was diagnosed with an incurable muscle disease at a young age. Something as simple as walking up stairs wasn't possible for Salano before the therapy. 'When he was a baby, he was a toddler: completely normal, he would climb up the stairs, he crawled, he walked within normal age range, and then all of a sudden it was like he couldn't play outside, he would ask for help to get upstairs,' Mother Maria Solano said. Maria says her son was diagnosed with a muscle deterioration disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was the first at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital to receive the new gene therapy that produces a missing protein that helps build muscle. It's changed his life completely. 'He has a whole new lease on life,' Maria Solano said. The therapy is all about building muscle strength. 'The whole idea is that we are able to improve their muscle strength and be able to continue to walk for a longer period of time,' Dr. Urvi Desai said. Desai said children diagnosed with the disease can lose their ability to walk in their teens and die young and says the new treatment is allowing Lucas to live his best life, doing things he loves. 'There's always hope and he's a testament to that, Sergio Solano, Lucas' father, said. Lucas received treatment in December. Atrium Health says since then, 5 more children have received it. Atrium said three more children are set to get the therapy in August. (WATCH BELOW: Atrium Health launches home care program for pediatric patients)

It's good, but it'll send your arteries straight to hell
Going for dinner at a hotel is A Very American Thing To Do. Most Brits will only eat at a hotel if they are actually staying there and can't be arsed to leave the building in order to get fed. It's fitting then, that the NoMad's newly revamped in-house restaurant is a high-octane tribute to the big, ballsy American brasserie. Previously known as the slightly more descriptive 'Atrium', the roomy, well, hotel atrium's rebrand as Twenty8 NoMad also reeks of flashy New York, utilising the kind of chaotic jumble of letters and numbers that brings to mind Manhattan staples Bungalow 8 and Eleven Madison Park. It's brash, even grating, but we'll give it a pass, as it fits the aesthetic bang on, which is all Manhattan-by-way-of-the-Marais, an extravagant Yank take on the French brassiere, complete with excessively high ceilings, balustrades and balconies. 'Intimate' it is not, but cosy is overrated, and we're struggling to think of anywhere else in London that seems at once like peak Studio 54 and the ideal date spot for Romeo and Juliet. Into this truly special space steps a lavish 'raw bar', supersized-steak frites and an entire menu devoted to the martini. Our dirty vodka offering comes with a whole second helping, courtesy of a sidecar on ice, as well as three blue-cheese stuffed olives. It's the first in a carnival of oversized (read: American) offerings. A starter of crispy artichokes, which, though deep fried, are surprisingly light, and also very big boys. It's easy to see why our prawn cocktail doesn't arrive in a bowl; it's their sheer size. Veritable baby arms of seafood (even with the heads taken off), and served with a pot of humming horseradish cocktail sauce. Then comes a bowl of mussels (all of them fastidiously turned face up), in a creamy green curry sauce accessorised with bubbly, burnished roti. It might seem inconspicuous on a menu dedicated to brassiere classics, but it works through sheer dint of its deliciousness - and yes, they also seem larger than your average bivalve. Mains too are mighty, and a glossy lobster pasta is almost demonic in its execution. Using what we can only assume is an entire block of butter, a hearty grind of black pepper, smattering of chives and huge lumps of lurid lobster, the chef has created a dish worthy of beelzebub's own dinner party. It's good, but it'll send your arteries straight to hell, is what we're saying. Did we have room for dessert? Did we heck. A minty grasshopper cocktail stood in for an actual pudding, and, in true bountiful American style, we were packed off with a small box of chocolate bon-bons. Bigger isn't always better, but it certainly seems to be when you're at Twenty8 NoMad. The vibe A very good-looking hotel restaurant. The food Epic portions of French/American bistro classics. The drink There's a whole martini menu as well as classic cocktails and high-end, high-price wine. Time Out tip Far be it from us to intentionally undercut a restaurant, but the starters here are sizable. If there's two of you, it wouldn't be out of the question to order one each and then a main to share along with a side.

An IRL 'Vought on Ice' from The Boys is coming to Westfield Century City Mall this week
In a move that could only make sense in the twisted universe of The Boys (the Prime Video satirical superhero series based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson), Amazon MGM Studios is bringing a live version of the show's infamous holiday ice pageant to Los Angeles—for real. The two-day pop-up, called "Vought on Ice," will take over the Atrium at Westfield Century City Mall this weekend on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. Timed to promote the Emmy-nominated series during awards season, the activation recreates the over-the-top musical number from season 4, where a cast of Vought-branded heroes perform 'Put the Christ Back in Christmas' on ice. At the mall, a team of skaters will lip-sync their way through a three-minute routine every hour from 1pm to 8pm, channeling the same glitzy, slightly terrifying energy that made the original so unforgettable. In between performances, the ice rink opens to the public. Fans can reserve a 40-minute skate session online or try for one of the limited walk-up spots. Just don't be late—reservations have a strict 15-minute grace period before they're handed off to the waitlist. The event also includes a mini exhibition of real costumes from the show, allowing fans to study the satin, spandex, and stars-and-stripes aesthetic of Vought's ice-capade up close. And yes, Jitter Bean coffee will be part of the experience, bringing one of the series' favorite fictional chains into the real world. The activation is free and open to the public, with more info at Skating spots are expected to go fast, because nothing says summer in L.A. like a corporate-sponsored winter propaganda musical on ice. It's not the first time that The Boys universe has overlapped with the City of Angels: last October, the streamer hosted a burger pop-up/fan experience in West Hollywood (8175 Melrose Ave) called " Vought A Burger"—get it?—to promote The Boys as well as fellow Prime Video series Gen V and The Boys Presents: Diabolical. And back in 2019, chef collaboration with the gritty Prime Video series.
