Sabah tourism created 380,000 jobs: Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reaffirmed that tourism remains a key economic driver for Sabah, underscoring its role in job creation, rural empowerment and sustainable development. 'In 2023, the sector contributed RM13.1 billion to Sabah's economy and supported more than 380,000 jobs across various sectors,' he said, when launching the Asean Travel Exchange (Atex) 2025, here, Thursday. His speech was delivered by State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Advertisement Hajiji also praised the growth of community-based tourism, particularly in rural districts where local villagers curate authentic Sabahan experiences. 'In 2024 alone, this sector generated RM7 million in revenue from 18 active districts,' he said and reiterated the State Government's commitment to supporting the sector through infrastructure development and digital enhancement. 'We are upgrading Kota Kinabalu International Airport, improving road access to rural destinations, and expanding digital platforms to manage and promote tourism more effectively,' he said. Hajiji said Sabah is on track to build a future-ready, resilient tourism economy driven by sustainability, technology and cultural identity. He said Atex 2025 marks a turning point for Sabah, serving not only as a platform to showcase the state but also to position it as a strategic partner in shaping the future of Asean tourism. It was organised by the Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta), Federation of Asean Travel Associations (Fata), and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) and brought together over 400 delegates, including more than 200 international buyers from 15 countries and is seen as a strategic platform to strengthen regional tourism cooperation and business linkages. Atex 2025 is the first tourism trade platform led by the private sector under the Asean umbrella. Meanwhile, Sabah is confident of reaching its target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year, said Liew. Liew revealed that over one million tourists had already visited Sabah between January and April 2025, generating RM1 billion in tourism revenue. This marks an 18 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. She said the strong start to the year reflects growing interest in Sabah as a destination, which is further supported by the confidence shown by Asean partners through their participation in Atex 2025. 'This is the first time all 10 Asean countries are represented in a tourism event hosted in Sabah, with around 500 delegates attending. 'It's a wonderful programme and a clear sign of the trust and confidence Asean countries have in Sabah,' she said. Liew also stressed that Sabah's strategic location in the heart of Asean positions it as a natural gateway for connectivity and collaboration within the region. 'Sabah is ideally located and increasingly serves as a bridge between regional travel markets. Tourism sector still big earner for Sabah, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Tourism continues to be a pillar of Sabah's economy, contributing significantly to both state revenue and rural community development, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The sector, the Chief Minister added, generated RM13.1bil for Sabah in 2023, accounting for 15% of the state's gross domestic product (GDP). 'Yet, statistics alone do not tell the whole story. Behind each number lies a livelihood, a family and individuals who have contributed to the tourism economy,' he said in his speech at the launching of the Asean Travel Exchange (Atex 2025) here on Thursday (June 19). His speech was delivered by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Hajiji highlighted that the real strength of Sabah's tourism lay in its expanding community-based tourism sector, which had seen impressive growth, particularly in rural districts. 'In 2024, revenue from this sector reached RM7mil, spanning 18 districts. These initiatives are led by local individuals and families, crafting experiences that are authentically Sabahan,' he said, saying that the state government views tourism not just as an economic engine but as a tool for uplifting communities. To support the sector's growth, he said Sabah was investing in infrastructure improvements, including ongoing upgrades at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, better road access to rural areas and improved digital platforms to promote visitor experiences. 'We are laying the groundwork for a resilient, future-ready tourism economy. Our strategy includes embracing green principles, pushing digital transformation, and strengthening Sabah's role as a premier host of international tourism events,' he said. He also envisioned Sabah as a 'peace hub', a harmonious space where business, nature, culture and heritage thrive side-by-side through sustainable development. 'We aspire to be a model showing how tourism can flourish while preserving the very things that make us unique … our environment, our cultures, and our communities,' he said. Hajiji also described Atex 2025 as a significant milestone that allowed Sabah to position itself not only as a top destination but also as a strategic partner in shaping Asean's tourism future. 'Hosting Atex 2025 is an honour, but more importantly, it is an opportunity. A chance to spark connections, explore business ventures, and collectively shape a more inclusive and sustainable tourism future for the region,' he said. Meanwhile, Liew described Atex 2025 as a golden opportunity for Sabah. 'This is a wonderful programme. Just imagine, top tourism leaders from all 10 Asean countries gathered here in Sabah, with over 500 delegates. I truly thank the organisers for making this possible,' she told the media after the launch ceremony. She added that this was likely the first time all 10 Asean nations had convened for a tourism-focused event in Kota Kinabalu. 'This is our moment to showcase Sabah as a strategic and unique tourist destination. I believe it will open new doors for collaboration and regional promotion,' she said. Liew also shared encouraging tourism statistics for 2025, where so far, Sabah has welcomed over one million tourists between January and April, an 18% increase from the same period last year, generating more than RM2bil in revenue. She expressed optimism that Sabah would meet its target of 3.5mil visitors by year-end. When asked if Sabah would consider hosting Atex again, she responded positively: 'If there is a request, we are more than willing. Let's make it a signature event for Sabah, and maybe our guests can stay an extra week or two to explore our beautiful destinations.'

Sabah to host Asean Travel Exchange 2025, gathering influential tourism players
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to host the Asean Travel Exchange (Atex) 2025 on June 19, which promises to spark fruitful collaborations among Asean tourism industry players. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was briefed on Atex 2025 by a delegation of influential tourism players at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Monday (May 26). Federation of Asean Travel Association (Fata) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said Atex 2025 will be the first international business-to-business tourism event to be hosted. The event is expected to bring in 200 international buyers and 100 regional sellers for trade, dialogue and collaboration in the tourism sector. The state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry and key tourism organisations are supporting the Atex 2025. Industry players expect Atex 2025 to be a game changer in positioning Sabah at the forefront of regional and international tourism markets. Among those in the delegation with Tan, who is Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president, were Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta) president Eddy Krismeidi, Nigel Wong and Air Asia director for Global Policy and Government Relations Zamani Rafique. State Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister and Chairman of Sabah Tourism, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai was also present.
