Railways tightens security on Kashmir link line, inspects key tunnels and bridges in wake of Pahalgam terror attack
In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed, Indian Railways has tightened the security across the 272-km Kashmir rail line, also called the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). Sources in the Northern Railway, the zone in which the project falls, said general manager Ashok Kumar Verma Wednesday inspected some of the key tunnels and critical infrastructure of the line, which recently got completed and are awaiting inauguration. Verma was accompanied by USBRL officials, including principal chief security commissioner (PCSC) Pankaj Gangwar and the Jammu Division's divisional railway manager (DRM). Currently, trains are operational on the 184-km stretch between Sangaldan and Baramulla, as well as the 25-km Udhampur-Katra section of USBRL. However, the Kashmir Valley remains unconnected by rail because the remaining 63-km Katra-Sangaldan section is still awaiting inauguration. This section was scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the launch of a special Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar on April 19. However, the event was cancelled due to inclement weather. 'The general manager inspected the line and reviewed the status of the project's key works. He inspected critical projects such as Chenab Bridge, Anji Bridge, and Banihal Tunnel. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and other security staff have been increased at three points,' said the source. 'First, special attention is being given to the circulating area of the station. The Government Railway Police (GRP) and the state police are also assisting in this. Apart from this, the baggage scanning and tunnels and bridges are two other places where more security personnel have been deployed,' added the source. The 111-km Katra-Banihal section of USBRL is the most arduous one, where more security is required. It is this place with India's longest transportation tunnel, T-50 of 12.77 km, the world's highest railway arch bridge of 359 metres height (Chenab Bridge) and the Railway's first cable-stayed bridge, Anji Bridge. Out of the 111-km line, 97 km or 87 per cent is in tunnels only. There are eight tunnels, ranging in length from 5 km to 12.77 km, on the Katra-Banihal section. 'To prevent any kind of untoward incident, the RPF, GRP, and local police share input on an hourly basis. We have a dedicated centre for all the tunnels to monitor CCTVs around the clock. A special direction has been given to remain vigilant while checking the footage,' said the source. The victims of Tuesday's attack included a railway employee. Atun Mone, a senior section engineer with the Parel workshop of Central Railway, was holidaying with his wife and daughter when the terrorists opened fire. The Northern Railway ran a one-way special train between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and New Delhi Wednesday night to evacuate tourists from Jammu and Kashmir after the attack. Officials said another one-way special reserved train between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and New Delhi would be operated from the Katra station at 10.50 am Thursday.
