Farmers request Udhayanidhi to order removal of all seemai karuvelam trees from Vaigai

Appealing to Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin to help remove seemai karuvelam trees (Prosopis juliflora) in the Vaigai river completely, farmers urged him to expedite ongoing 'anicut' work at Tirupuvanam Pudur at a cost of ₹40.27 crore. Mr. Udayanidhi, who was on a visit to Sivaganga district to review ongoing development works, was accorded a warm reception by Minister K.R. Periakaruppan, District Collector Asha Ajith, MLA Tamilarasi and officials of the Water Resources Department, led by Superintending Engineer Thangaraj and Executive Engineer Ramesh. The Deputy CM inspected Tirupuvanam Pudur anicut work which will provide water for irrigation to tail-end areas. After the farmers flagged the problems faced by them in getting water due to rampant sand mining in the river and other issues, the government had earmarked ₹40.27 crore for the construction of the 'anicut'. This, according to the engineers, will provide water to around 7,000 acres of cultivable land from Tirupuvanam to Kanur canal and Pazhayanoor canal, which feed about 20 tanks. Ayacut Vaigai Pasana Sangam State general secretary Adimoolam appealed to the Deputy CM to order removal of seemai karuvelam trees on a war footing. These trees had not only hindered the free flow of water in the river, but also affected the eco-system, he stressed. Visits sports hostel Later, Mr. Udayanidhi visited the sports hostel at the District Sports Stadium and tasted the food served to the boys there. He also sat along with them and interacted with them over lunch. Mr. Udayanidhi listened to the boys' grievances and posed for group photographs. Some of them were eager to take selfies with him and he readily obliged. District Sports Officer Ramesh Kanna explained the facilities available in the hostel. The Deputy CM then presided over a meeting, in which Ms. Asha Ajith explained various completed and ongoing projects in the district. Appreciating the district officials from multiple departments, Mr. Udayanidhi said the government had delivered its promises in the last four years. Still, he admitted that there might be expectations from the people and appealed to the officials to bring them (petitions) to the elected representatives for implementation. Additional Chief Secretary Pradeep Yadav, Additional Secretary R.V. Shajeevana, senior officials from various departments presented the status of the works at the meeting. The Deputy CM handed over welfare assistance to the tune of ₹24.24 crore to 1,512 beneficiaries on the occasion, according to a press release.

Devakottai traders refuse to vacate shops within 30 days for bus stand renovation works

Devakottai Town and Bus Stand Lease Shops Association submitted a petition with Collector Asha Ajith here on Monday refusing to vacate within 30 days for bus stand renovation works. They also demanded extension of time period to vacate shops and allocation of outlets to the same traders after renovating the municipality bus stand. As the renovation works are to commence at a cost of ₹12.8 crore, for the purpose of expanding the area of the bus stand, notice was issued to the shops operating in the nearby daily market and other areas, said A. Periyakaruppan, president of the association. For expansion, about 110 shops in the daily market and 60 shops located at the bus stand, Tirupathur Road and Vadiyar Road, were asked by the municipal administration to vacate within the next 30 days, he added. Demanding certain concessions for the shop owners who have been here for the past 30 years, he said that while opening the bus stand after renovation, the shops should be allocated to the same people who had already run their shops there. 'We suffered a heavy loss during the Covid-19 period by paying the rent for all the months when our shops were closed. Even after that, we continue to run our shops and pay the rent,' he added. To compensate for the loss, Mr. Periyakaruppan noted that the six months' rent collected should be discounted. In addition, as the shopkeepers had to find a suitable alternative location to the existing ones and had to arrange money for those works, the municipality should give them time for at least a year before asking them to vacate the shops, he added. Otherwise, the local body themselves should provide a suitable alternative location till the renovation works were carried out in the bus stand, he noted. He also made sure that they would not accept the 30-day period fixed by the administration to vacate the shops. He added that if their demands were not considered by the district administration, they would stage a protest.

Fertilisers are sufficiently stocked in Sivaganga; farmers need not be apprehensive, say officials

There was sufficient stock of urea and other fertilisers in the district and there was no need for any apprehension, farmers' were informed here on Thursday. Sivaganga District Collector Asha Ajith presided over the farmers' grievance meeting. When farmers' raised a query that there was not sufficient fertiliser, especially, urea and potash in select blocks, Joint Registrar (Cooperatives) Rajendra Prasad said that there was enough stock in hand. There was no need to panic. The district had at least 100 metric tons of urea. He said that all the outlets selling fertilisers have been instructed to display the stock position, price and other information in the boards. He also assured to take swift action against erring outlets and informed the farmers about the measures taken by the district administration. Some of the farmers' wanted the agriculture department officials to remove the thorny bushes (karuvelam trees) which posed a big challenge to the growth of various crops, the Collector explained the steps taken block wise across the district. A farmer Manalmedu Raja said that the officials should have a monitoring mechanism in Poovanthi, where a large number of North Indians and other people worked in the granite polishing units. Though the government was sympathetic with farmers' who lost their crops to destruction by the wild animals, the Tangedco officials refused permission to install solar fences, the members complained with the Collector. As a result, the issue remained unsolved and farmers' were at the receiving end all through the year, they said and urged the officials to permit them to put up solar fence.
