Bernama Strengthens Global Media Ties With Russia's TV BRICS, Rossiya Segodnya

PETERSBURG (Russia), June 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has signed a strategic partnership with two major Russian media agencies, TV BRICS and Rossiya Segodnya, on Thursday, to strengthen cooperation in the field of information and communication. The partnership aims to strengthen bilateral relations through the exchange of news materials, joint content production and broader editorial collaboration, in line with efforts to provide a more comprehensive international perspective to audiences in Malaysia and globally. bootstrap slideshow Through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TV BRICS, both parties will share news content in English, collaborate on producing media programmes, and explore research initiatives related to the media industry. Meanwhile, the MoU with Rossiya Segodnya focuses on the exchange of news articles as well as technical and editorial support to journalists. Chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin signed on behalf of Bernama. Also present was Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. TV BRICS Chairman Ivan Polyakov and First Deputy-in-Chief of Rossiya Segodnya media group (Sputnik's parent company) Sergey Kochetkov signed on behalf of their respective agencies. The agreements were signed on the sidelines of the 19th General Assembly of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), currently taking place here. Nur-ul said under both agreements, the agencies involved are also committed to maintaining journalistic standards by ensuring accurate attribution, complying with intellectual property rights and fostering mutual understanding through professional media interactions.

19th OANA General Assembly Opens In St. Petersburg

PETERSBURG (Russia), June 19 (Bernama) -- The 19th General Assembly of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), a major gathering of news agencies, kicked off in Russia's second-largest city on Thursday. Hosted by the country's TASS agency under the theme "News Agencies and Challenges in the Modern World', the first plenary session of the general assembly started with an opening speech by TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov. bootstrap slideshow It was followed by a video address by Hossein Jaberi Ansari, IRNA (Iran) Managing Director and current President of OANA. The Iranian delegation was unable to travel to the former imperial city due to the ongoing conflict between the country and Israel. More than a hundred representatives of news agencies from more than 30 countries are attending the assembly here. Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) is represented by Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. The 54th OANA Executive Board meeting in Kuala Lumpur last February decided to grant TASS the right to host the 19th General Assembly in St. Petersburg. According to TASS, OANA delegates are also expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) taking place here.

HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival Highlights Linguistic Heritage In Journalism
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival has successfully raised awareness on reviving Malay cultural arts, particularly within the field of journalism, says Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. She said the inaugural competition proved the ability of media practitioners to express current issues through the beauty of the national language while showcasing their creativity. 'I witnessed how the pantun (Malay poetic verses) exchanged were not only amusing but also highlighted current issues in their own unique style. 'It's no easy feat, as composing pantun requires skill and a deep appreciation for the language,' she told Bernama after the event at Wisma Bernama here today. Also present were Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, Deputy Editor-in-Chief (News Service) Nasriah Darus, Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Economic News Service) Azlina Aziz, and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Language and Literature Development Department director Abang Haliman Abang Julai. Commenting further, Nur-ul Afida said the festival was not merely a competition, but a platform to empower the nation's cultural heritage. She said Bernama was committed to supporting efforts to strengthen the use of the Malay language in journalism and believed that such culture-based initiatives could bridge connections between the media, language, and society. 'I have discussed with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and expressed hope that the Pantun Festival can be continued next year as the second edition in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA), God willing,' she said. Meanwhile, Abang Haliman praised the organisation of the pantun festival, which he described as capable of instilling deep awareness among media professionals regarding the importance of language and literature.

A Tribute To National Heritage: Pesta Pantun HAWANA-DBP 2025 Kicks Off Tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Pesta Pantun HAWANA-DBP 2025, to take place tomorrow, is a platform for uniting the media community while upholding the pantun as an invaluable cultural heritage of the nation. The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, said the competition to be held at Wisma Bernama in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025, will feature eight teams, each comprising four contestants. The HAWANA 2025 project director said that contestants are encouraged to wear traditional attire, in line with the competition's theme of Traditional Classical Malay, to enliven the event, which Bernama is hosting for the first time in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). 'This competition will feature four-line pantun verses with themes ranging from open topics to journalism and unity, and will have three rounds — the preliminary stage, semi-finals, and the final to determine the champion,' he said in a statement here. He said that Group A comprises four teams from Bernama, Media Prima, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), and Astro Radio News, and Group B consists of participants from the Malaysia Gazette, the Islamic Programming Department of TV3, Sinar Harian, and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). The panel of judges includes Akademi DBP language planner Dr Faezah Muhayat, DBP central region language planner Musazliza Mustan Shir, language planner and special officer to DBP's director-general Azimin Daud, and Datuk Chuari Selamat, the pantun master. Meanwhile, Bernama representative Fatin Najmi Mohammad Shah said that despite their work commitments, each team member dedicated their time to practise. Fatin Najmi, who heads the Fact Check Desk (MyCheck Malaysia), said that for their preparations, they studied the usage of the classical Malay Language and watched videos on pantun. 'Undoubtedly, we are nervous as we are up against formidable opponents, many of whom have long been involved in the world of pantun,' she said.

Bernama radio journalist Ahmad Irfan Che Mohd Ruzaidi said that his team's preparations have been progressing smoothly despite their busy workload. 'We've held several training sessions. While they haven't been very frequent, the time we've spent has been highly productive, and we've been supporting each other every step of the way,' he said. The winner will take home RM3,000 in cash, while the runner-up will receive RM2,000, with trophies and certificates. Third and fourth-place winners will receive RM1,000 and RM500, respectively, along with trophies and certificates. Consolation prize winners will receive hampers and certificates. The winner of the special jury award for the Best Pemantun category will receive RM500 cash, a trophy, and a certificate of appreciation. The best-dressed contestants will also receive prizes from DBP. The prize-giving ceremony will be held on June 14 as part of the highlight of HAWANA 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officiate the event, which is expected to attract approximately 1,000 media practitioners from within and outside the country. HAWANA, organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, will also feature other events, including a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3 and a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14. Also lined up are the two-day HAWANA carnival and exhibition at Sunway Putra Mall, which will kick off on June 13, a traditional-themed sporting event involving media practitioners, and a roadshow to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak, and Johor.
