ESPN's Cam Pushes Wild Cowboys' Dak vs. Arch Prediction

ESPN's Cam Pushes Wild Cowboys' Dak vs. Arch Prediction originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cam Newton made headlines with a recent claim: if Dak Prescott doesn't lead the Dallaa Cowboys to the NFC Championship Game this season, Dallas should move on—and go all in for Arch Manning. Advertisement On every level—financial, practical, and logical—it's pure wild fantasy. Let's start with the money. Prescott isn't entering a standard contract year. He's entering Year 1 of a brand-new extension that's already been restructured to push some of his money into later years. The financial implications of cutting or trading him are staggering. A post-June 1 cut in 2025 would cost the Cowboys over $90 million in dead money. Even waiting until 2026 only drops that number to $74 million. Trading Dak post-June 1 in 2026 could still carry a $34–$90 million hit depending on timing. In plain terms: the Cowboys are tied to Dak until 2027. Advertisement Now let's talk Arch Manning. He's not planning on entering the NFL Draft in 2026. He's said it, his family has hinted at it, and Texas insiders all echo the same thing: Arch plans to stay with the Longhorns for two more years. That would make him eligible in 2027—at the absolute earliest. And even if, in a wild twist, Arch Manning wins a national title and Heisman this year and decides to declare for the 2026 draft—how would Dallas go about getting him? Newton's scenario assumes a playoff team will magically land a top-three pick in a stacked draft. That's not how this works. The Cowboys would need a full-blown collapse, a historic trade package, or both. Advertisement In short? There is no timeline, financial scenario, or football logic that supports Cam's hypothetical. … and it's a shame that ESPN provides a forum to 'experts' so lacking in basic information. But we suppose … It's the NFL's quietest time of year. And in the silence, sometimes the loudest takes make the least sense. College Football Analyst Issues Blunt Opinion on Arch Manning

College Football Analyst Issues Blunt Opinion on Arch Manning originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the larger offseason conversation about college football, it's safe to say that most of what is driving headlines is hyperbolic. With little to go on other than some spring practices and coach quotes from press conferences, the game's pundits are forced to dig a little deeper in their bag to make their points. Advertisement One such case is the hype around Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning. While there was some promise delivered on the field from the 21-year-old signal-caller, Manning still only attempted 90 passes last season. Jay Crain of The Daily Wire's "Crain & Company" brought Manning down a peg, if only to give some credit to other quarterbacks, while calling out the hype machine during a visit with On3's "The Hard Count" with J.D. PicKell. 'I understand how this business works, right?" Crain said. "I mean, controversial hot takes, you know, they're what's going to move the needle, I understand that. Now you know I have some controversial takes, but I think you know when you look at some of these quarterback rankings. People are putting Arch Manning at two, like ahead of guys like (LSU quarterback) Garrett Nussmeier and even ahead of guys like (Texas A&M quarterback) Marcel Reed. It blows my mind." In a college football quarterback rankings article from ESPN from David Hale, he ranked Manning in his second tier, behind signal-callers like Clemson's Cade Klubnik, Nussmeier, Oklahoma's John Mateer, Penn State's Drew Allar and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. Advertisement "I know why, because his last name is Manning, and none of this is Arch's fault," Crain continued. "Arch just shows up to work, trying to be the best version of himself. So I'm not saying this in any way reflects who Arch Manning is, but to me, you don't have enough information to be able to say (he is the second-best quarterback). It's like we've seen the trailer for the Arch Manning movie. Now, the trailer has been pretty good, but I've seen many good trailers, and the movie ended up falling flat. I've seen some pretty good trailers, and the movie ended up being a hit, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars." Given the sheer volume of speculation and conversation that follows the sport, Crain is giving a lot of credence to a small segment of voices in the sport, as there are also many analysts who have said they need to see more before they can buy into the hype surrounding Manning. Another ESPN article ranking the sport's quarterbacks from Adam Rittenberg slotted Manning at No. 12. Pro Football Focus listed Texas as an honorable mention in its list of top 10 quarterback rooms. 247Sports placed Manning at No. 3. So there are examples on both sides of this argument. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning (16).Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images "I'm not saying he won't be, but to me, when you start putting Arch Manning with what we know now as your number-two or number-one or really, top-five returning quarterbacks through all classes, not newcomers, but through all classes. ... it just reminds me of the guys out in Vegas who have the cups with the ball, and they make you try to figure out which one is in it," Crain said. "I think it's a parlor trick. So will he end up living up to the hype? I hope so for him. It's going to be almost impossible because that's how high the hype train is on him, because his last name is Manning, and he's playing at a place like Texas." Advertisement Crain made a fair point, but with there being so many voices out there talking about Manning and all the quarterbacks across the sport, it's possible to find a narrative that hypes up Manning and another that dismisses him. Manning is replacing Quinn Ewers at the University of Texas as the latter was drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. In limited playing time last year, Manning appeared in 10 games, mostly in mop-up duty. He passed for 939 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 108 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Earlier this offseason, Manning was turning heads with a rebuilt physique, with more time spent in the weight room. Ranking Top SEC QB Below Arch Manning Slammed as ‘Malpractice'

Ranking Top SEC QB Below Arch Manning Slammed as 'Malpractice' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. This year's crop of college football quarterbacks is full of a lot of talent, especially in the SEC. Between the returning talent and the potential of new starters, forming a cohesive rankings list from the available signal-callers in the SEC is no small feat. Advertisement During the "Crain & Company" podcast, the hosts of the show argued their rankings on where and why certain SEC quarterbacks appeared on their respective lists. Jake Crain came out swinging when he reacted to Blain Crain's decision to slot the Texas Longhorns' Arch Manning over the Florida Gators' DJ Lagway in his SEC QB rankings list. "I just think putting Arch above DJ Lagway is malpractice," said Jake Crain. Blain reasserted his belief that Manning could project as a top-five SEC quarterback and that he would be willing to put money on it. That comment seemed to spur Jake further. "But we've seen DJ ball. ... You may be right. I just feel like I want to go off things that I know." Advertisement Co-host David Cone interjected and asked if Manning would "go into Columbus and win in Week 1," to which Blain answered in the affirmative. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Diggins / Austin American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Texas is on the road to start the season at the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30 at noon ET. With Ewers now in the NFL and a member of the Miami Dolphins after being a seventh-round pick, the opportunity to start has opened up for Manning, along with all the hype that comes with his legendary surname. Advertisement In 10 games played with two starts last season, Manning passed for 939 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 108 yards and four scores. Florida's Lagway had his moments last year, too. As a true freshman, he entered the year as the Gators' backup but was the starter in Week 2 when Graham Mertz was placed in concussion protocol. Lagway would go on to pass for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Lagway was On3's No. 3 player in the country and the top quarterback in its 2024 recruiting rankings. Manning was the top player in On3's 2023 recruit rankings. ESPN's FPI Predicts Who Will Have Most Wins in College Football

ESPN's FPI Predicts Who Will Have Most Wins in College Football originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ohio State climbed back up the mountain during the 2024 college football season, winning its first national title in a decade. Advertisement The Buckeyes ran the table in the College Football Playoff after losing to the Michigan Wolverines to end the regular season. They're a top favorite to go back-to-back this upcoming season, but will have stiff competition. According to ESPN's FPI, the Texas Longhorns and the Buckeyes are projected to have the country's most wins (10.4). Texas Longhorns QB Arch Miron-Imagn Images The Longhorns will turn to Arch Manning at quarterback for the 2025 season after he sat behind Quinn Ewers for the previous two seasons. Ewers led the Longhorns to the CFP in back-to-back seasons before being selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Advertisement Despite sitting behind Ewers for two seasons, Manning still got some playing time, especially during the 2024 season. He played in 10 games, finishing with 939 yards through the air, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. He will get the start when the Longhorns open the 2025 season in Columbus against the Buckeyes on August 30. College GameDay will also be present for that contest. The Longhorns will also return other key players, including linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., edge rusher Collin Simmons, and running back CJ Baxter. Baxter missed the entire 2024 campaign with a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee but was productive in 2023, finishing with 659 rushing yards and five touchdowns off 138 carries. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian will be in his fifth season as head coach when the 2025 season starts in August. He has compiled a 38-17 overall record in his first four seasons at the helm.
