Ready for Takeoff: Your Digital Passport Is Cleared to Fly

Save your passport in Apple Wallet starting this fall. Your iPhone or Apple Watch can display it. It will only be accepted for domestic soon? Now Apple users can take a passport with them digitally. Digital identification is approved at select TSA checkpoints now that REAL ID has been implemented; in response, Apple recently announced that it will offer Digital ID when it rolls out iOS 26 this fall. This new feature will let Apple fans seamlessly create and add a digital ID to Apple Wallet using a U.S. passport. It can only be used for domestic travel; international travelers will still need to present a physical passport. There are also some limitations: The feature will require iPhone 8 or higher, iOS 16.5 or later in most states; California residents will need the iPhone XS or later and iOS 17.5 or later. Puerto Rican users will need iPhone XS and iOS 18.1 or higher. This feature will allow Apple Wallet to compete more effectively with Google Wallet, which recently announced support for both U.S. and U.K. a few limitations, Apple fans will be able to add U.S. passports to the Digital ID section of their Apple Wallets starting Fall 2025 with the release of iOS Master Apple Wallet: Add Boarding Passes for a Seamless Airport Experience Read the original article on Lifewire

Don't have a Real ID? The TSA just made your airport experience easier

Apple just gave frequent flyers—and Real ID procrastinators—something to look forward to this fall: a digital passport option in Apple Wallet. The feature, part of the next iOS update, lets users create a digital ID using their U.S. passport. Even better, the Transportation Security Administration just approved it as a Real ID alternative—but only for certain types of travel. ' Digital ID offers a secure and private new way for users to store and present their ID information using their iPhone and Apple Watch,' Apple said in a recent release. 'Users can seamlessly create and add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet using a U.S. passport.' This is surely something iPhone users will get excited about, but here's the fine print: the new feature is not a full passport replacement. It's only approved for domestic travel and only at TSA checkpoints that support it. You'll still need your physical passport to get through customs, immigration or any international border. But for domestic travel? It's officially Real ID compliant. As Real ID enforcement began in May, many travelers found themselves scrambling, either upgrading their licenses or falling back on passports just to fly from one city to another. Apple's digital ID is now a workaround for those who still haven't made the switch, letting users tap through security instead of rifling through their bulging bags to flash a physical document. The TSA confirmed that digital passports in Apple Wallet will be accepted at supported domestic checkpoints—with 250 airports already on board, including LAX, JFK and O'Hare—but they are clear about one thing: bring your real passport if you're going abroad. Period. Alongside the digital ID, Apple's also polishing up boarding passes and adding new travel tools to Wallet to streamline your airport routine. It's a smart step forward, but it's not a replacement yet, so keep that passport handy, at least until international travel catches up.

Apple to expand digital car key feature to more brands

Published: | Updated: Apple wants you to ditch your car keys. The world's third-largest company announced it's expanding the Apple Wallet car key support to include even more automakers. That means more drivers will soon be able to lock, unlock, and even start their cars directly from their iPhones. And some drivers will be able to ditch their clunky keys and fobs. Apple first launched digital car keys in 2020, but until now, the feature was limited to a handful of high-end vehicles from specific brands. Acura, Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC are joining the lineup in the US, bringing the total number of global partner brands to 13, Apple said on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC. Until now, the feature was only in cars produced by luxury automakers like Volvo, Genesis, Rivian, Audi, and BMW — and only in some of their products. Hyundai and Kia were the only budget-friendly options in the original rollout. Apple didn't say exactly when the feature will be available in new cars, only saying the launch was coming 'soon.' A representative didn't immediately respond to request for comment. It's a move that continues Apple's slow but deliberate push into the auto industry. Between 2014 and 2024, the company spent billions attempting to develop an Apple Car, codenamed 'Project Titan .' But after 10 years in the lab, Apple cancelled the project last year . Instead, the tech giant has poured millions of dollars into developing its popular phone-mirroring system that projects apps and widgets onto car screens, called Apple CarPlay. The investment shows the tech giant is clearly interested in becoming the digital interface for the modern vehicle. Apple also unveiled a new look and feel for soon-to-launch CarPlay updates. The company teased a redesigned version of the system with its controversial Liquid Glass aesthetic, interactive tiles, and new standby widgets that keep things like clocks and calendar events visible while the car idles. Not every automaker is on board with Apple's vision for the dashboard. The CarPlay update has faced a surprising amount of resistance in the automotive sector. General Motors — which owns Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC — has already started phasing out Apple CarPlay in its new electric vehicles. Instead of mirroring your iPhone, GM's EVs now run on Ultifi, its in-house software platform. The company has poured millions into developing the system as part of a broader strategy to control the user experience — and the valuable data that comes with it. And GM isn't alone. Some of the biggest names in the EV world, including Tesla and Rivian , have never supported CarPlay. These automakers are betting that drivers will adapt to native systems that are more tightly integrated with the car itself.

Resorts World Las Vegas Debuts Room Keys in Apple Wallet, No App Needed — Exclusive

Digital room keys have been around for years, but the catch has been that guests have to download a hotel's app to make them work. So some hoteliers are hoping to simplify things. Resorts World Las Vegas has become the first major hotel on the Strip to let guests store their room keys in Apple Wallet, ending the need to download a hotel's app to access rooms digitally. The 3,506-room resort on the Las Vegas Strip said Monday it had launched the technology to reduce the long lines for check in. "Having a guest stand in line to check in is a guest dissatisfied," said Shannon McCallum, vice president of hotel operations at Resorts World Las Vegas, where lines could stretch to over 20 minutes at peak times. Traditional mobile key systems required guests to download hotel apps and often forced them to still visit the front desk for verification. Now most guests can instead check in through a web link sent via email or by scanning a QR code and then save their room key directly to their iPhone's Apple Wallet. The idea is similar to digitally storing boarding passes or event tickets on a device. No More App Requirement Since 2021, Apple has let guests store
