I've kept iPhones for 5 years and Nutribullets for 8 — here's how I nurture my tech and stretch its lifespan
Yes, it's true. Tech is expensive and I am poor. Luckily, I've been able to keep iPhones going for over 5 years (multiple times!), Nutribullets for 8 years, and I'm into my third year with my beloved MacBook Pro (and it runs just as well today as it did when I unboxed it). So how do I do it? Well, I follow the guidelines set out by the manufacturers — I don't push my gadgets to the limits and I respect their desire to rest. Secondly, I ensure I future-proof my gear by getting the best specs for my personal requirements, which means I don't have to upgrade very often. And the most important one of all? I take care of my stuff. I clean it and store it properly. If you follow my tips, I'm sure you'll be able to keep tech going for as long as possible. If a phone's instructions say "don't submerge in water", then don't submerge your phone in water. All jokes aside, this is actually a really important point. It's the most important point in this article. Nutribullet advises against blending dry ingredients as it can damage the blades. More often than not, home appliances like coffee machines and air fryers specify "suitable for private domestic use only." Products like these are only intended to be used a few times a day. Think of it like this: if a coffee machine is used thirty times a day for a year, that's almost 11,000 coffees. However, if a coffee machine is used twice a day for a year, that's only 730 coffees, meaning it would take 15 years to make the same amount of beverages. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As a result, I don't expect my tech to do more than it promises. My iPhone 11 lasted 5 years before I upgraded. I didn't even need to upgrade (it still worked perfectly fine). I upgraded to my current phone because I'd just sold my car and I had a bit of spare cash (for the first time ever). Why did my iPhone last so long? I don't overuse it. My screen time is maximum 4 hours a day and I tend not to use my phone for hours on cellular. However, if you use your phone for work, you obviously won't have this luxury. I recommend following the phone manufacturer's advice in this case: Apple, for instance, recommends updating software often and using low power mode. This advice may change based on manufacturer. This is the Nutribullet I've had since 2016. It's still going strong today because I look after it. I follow all Nutribullet's instructions, I clean it well, and I store the blades properly. Now, I would recommend getting the Nutribullet 900W to last even longer. To illustrate this point, I'm going to take you back to 2017. I needed a new MacBook, seeing as I was at college and taking my incredibly heavy laptop into school was too laborious and gave me permanent backache. I was also a student, so I wasn't exactly rolling in cash. I went to the Apple Store and bought the cheapest MacBook there — it cost me about £900 ($1,200 roughly). It also had a 128GB SSD and just 8GB of RAM. Did this MacBook last me a long time? Yes and no. I ended up using this laptop until 2022 when it quite literally died. It only worked while plugged in and if I tried to run more than one app at once it sounded like a jet engine. I also had to have an external hard drive plugged in at all times to access my files. Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it'll last a long time. It's about evaluating what you need for the future. So in 2022, when I finally had scrounged enough money to upgrade, I got the top-of-the-range model. I upgraded from an M1 chip to an M1 Max, upgraded to 1TB of storage, and upgraded the RAM. And now? Three years later, my MacBook Pro still runs like the day I unboxed it. It runs games, video editing software, and other demanding apps without breaking a sweat. So I would recommend getting the top end product (if you can afford it, of course). In other cases, this would look like getting a (highly-rated) $800 espresso machine instead of an "it'll do" $200 one. If you don't need to replace something as often, you'll save money in the long run. Just because something is expensive, though, doesn't mean it'll last a long time. It's about evaluating what you need for the future. I learned from my 2017 mistake and I didn't impulsively buy my new MacBook. I consolidated all the information available to me, researched my specs, and made the purchase only once I was 100% certain. I know this one seems obvious, but it's actually really important. Maintenance encompasses loads of stuff: cleaning, storing in the appropriate place and replacing faulty parts. For example, if your screen cracks, you should probably go and get a replacement before the crack gets worse. Similarly, if you throw your headphones on the floor instead of keeping them in the case, they probably won't last for very long. My iPhone 11 screen never cracked because I had a really good phone case and screen protector. Now, with my iPhone 16, I have the best iPhone 16 phone case to ensure my phone doesn't smash again. This goes for everything I own: I empty and clean my Dyson Gen5Detect vacuum regularly, I descale my De'Longhi La Specialista Opera every month (I live in a hard water area), and I dust my Bose Smart Soundbar every few days (this prevents particles getting in the speaker mechanism). If you follow these three tips, then you'll probably end up saving money in the long run. Your tech will last longer and, in time, save you $$$.

Early Prime Day deal: The Apple Watch that made me a better person is now $329 on Amazon
New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. Full admission: I've never been that into wearable tech. The idea of having a piece of metal strapped to your wrist, constantly beeping, reminding you to breathe, or to respond to your missed calls, seemed rather unnecessary and somewhat annoying. But, after hearing countless friends rave about how their smartwatches changed their lifestyle for the better, I caved and decided to test out the Apple Watch Series 10 myself. Between chugging out shopping articles and chasing around a two-year-old, I try to carve out a bit of time for myself, but it's not easy. I could definitely use a little nudge to get going from time to time. So, why not give the little smart device a shot? I'm not the only person curious about the smartwatch trend. The Series 10 is a consistent #1 bestseller on Amazon. Besides, if you wait for the perfect opportunity (like today, for example), you could snag it on sale for up to 20% off. Amazon Pros: Advanced smart features (Siri, Apple Pay, App Store, Call/Texting) Sleek, attractive, lightweight build Easy to integrate with the iPhone, and access to the entire Apple Store is very convenient Smooth, intuitive touchscreen experience Different band and style options are available Cons: Shorter battery life (between 18 and 36 hours) GPS tracking works for casual, everyday use, but is less advanced than the Garmin The Series 10 is kind of a jack of all trades; it tracks all sorts of health markers, from heart rate to wrist temperature, sleep duration, and even period cycle tracking. It also comes with a few unique features tailored to different goals, like a Tides app for surfers and Headspace for mindfulness. Plus, it even syncs up with Strava for runners, making it a great race-training device. For me, the simple activity ring was enough to encourage me to meet my movement goals for the day. It's easy to lose track of your daily goals, but the Series 10 makes it a little bit addictive to get them done. You can use it for fitness-tracking alone, but it's also stacked with numerous smart features and can be treated as an extension of your iPhone if you appreciate staying connected. You can receive texts and calls right from your wrist, especially useful if you're the type to stay away from your phone from time to time. Not to mention, the upgraded Series 10 offers a 30% larger screen, so squinting isn't necessary. I stare at screens all day, and this is one that doesn't bother me. The whole device is also substantially slimmer and lighter than I imagined, at just 36.4 grams. It's easy to forget you're wearing it at all. It took me a bit of time to sync it up to my phone (an update was necessary), but navigating the Apple Watch interface and customizing the layout was a breeze, and I don't consider myself tech-savvy by any means. Since I've started wearing it, I've felt encouraged to stand up more, get in those final steps to hit my goals, and skip the binge-watching for a little extra sleep. Not to be dramatic, but it's totally transformed my life for the better, and for just $329 — it could yours too. For a watch that can do everything from monitoring your heart rate and sleep cycles to tracking your steps and encouraging mindfulness, it feels like a true deal. I'd argue that it's a phenomenal investment for anyone looking to optimize their wellness routine, especially if you consider yourself a bit of a data nerd and like to see your health metrics and progress over time. Flash-forward to today, and my only regret is that I didn't join the cult-favorite fitness tracker sooner. Looking for a headline-worthy haul? Keep shopping Post Wanted. Is your Mac mini dead? Apple confirms power issue affecting some models, offers free fix
If your Mac mini has decided it won't power up anymore, you're not alone. Apple just launched a new repair program for the M2 Mac mini (2023) as a "very small percentage" may no longer power on. The problem affects devices manufactured between June 16, 2024 to November 23, 2024, but that's not an easy way to work out if yours is included. Instead, head over to Apple's Mac mini Service Program page and enter your serial number. If your Apple Mac mini M2 (2023) has the problem that leads to a lot of nothing going on, then you'll be offered a free repair either with Apple direct or an authorized service partner — just fill in your details and go to an Apple Store or partner repair store. Given the type of repair needed, it's likely that you'll be without your Mac mini for at least a couple of days, so it might be a good idea to keep a cheap laptop handy. Even if it's a Windows machine, you can still access a lot of your Apple data on According to Apple's service program, the hardware issue was only introduced to the Mac mini M2 a year ago, with models manufactured between June and November 2024. So it's only just getting an 'official' problem status now. However, Reddit user hkfan451 took to r/macmini in October 2024 to report that their brand new Mac mini M2 had a power issue and Apple wouldn't allow them to mail it in for repair (although you can now that the official service program is in operation). It's not clear if that is the same issue that Apple has now acknowledged, but the timeline would match up. Though, some Mac minis have run into power issues that are unrelated to this manufacturing issue. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In late 2023, there were discussions on the Apple Community forums about Mac mini M2 units losing power. And it's a tricky one to troubleshoot since you don't have a built-in display, so you also need to check that the unit doesn't just appear dead, but actually isn't powering on at all. If there doesn't seem to be any activity from the Mac mini at all — so no beeps, and the status indicator light on the front stays off instead of turning white — then it's time for a service. Fortunately, some power-related issues may also be covered under warranty.
