16 billion passwords leaked in biggest breach-your account may be at risk

Over 16 billion passwords have been leaked in a global cyber breach, and experts warn your personal accounts could be at risk without you even knowing it New Delhi What would you do if someone quietly copied your house keys and made millions of duplicates? That's what just happened on the internet. Except instead of house keys, it's passwords—and 16 billion of them. A report by Cybernews and Forbes has confirmed what cybersecurity experts feared: the largest password leak in history is now live, with billions of credentials up for sale on the dark web. The scale is staggering, the implications global. The breach that changed everything More than 30 separate data sets, each containing tens of millions to over 3.5 billion records, have been uncovered. Together, they form a massive archive of stolen login data—fresh, organised, and dangerously exploitable. 'This isn't just a leak. It's a blueprint for mass exploitation,' said a WION report. Crucially, these records weren't scraped from old data leaks. They were collected by infostealer malware—malicious programs that quietly sit on infected devices, harvesting usernames and passwords without users ever realising it. Who's at risk? Everyone Your Apple ID. Your Gmail. Facebook, GitHub, Telegram—even access to government services. The leaked credentials open doors to all these platforms and more. Google has already urged users to switch from traditional passwords to passkeys, a more secure login alternative. The FBI has also warned against clicking on suspicious SMS links—an increasingly common phishing tactic now supercharged by this breach. According to Merca20, anyone—not just cybercriminals—can buy these stolen credentials on the dark web for a small fee. Where did the data come from? Cybersecurity analysts say the breach aggregates multiple sources: Credential stuffing lists Logs from infostealer malware Repackaged data from earlier breaches Some of the data was uploaded to attacker-controlled servers; some left exposed by accident. Regardless of origin, it has now been weaponised into a single, dangerously efficient toolset for cyberattacks. What makes this breach different? Most of the 16 billion credentials are new—not recycled from earlier breaches. That means the vast majority of affected users still don't know their accounts have been compromised. Even more worrying: the data is neatly structured and ready for immediate use, significantly lowering the barrier for hackers to launch attacks at scale. What you can do now Cybersecurity experts are urging immediate action. Here's how you can protect yourself: Change your passwords, especially on frequently used platforms Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique credentials Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever available Switch to passkeys, if your platform supports them

Ohio man says he lost $27K after a scammer came to his house — here's his warning

Robert Wise of Licking County, Ohio, is speaking out after allegedly being scammed out of $27,000 — and he's not holding back. Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 6 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Nervous about the stock market in 2025? Find out how you can access this $1B private real estate fund (with as little as $10) Wise, 67, shared his story with WBNS 10TV last month to help others avoid being fooled by 'no-good, scum people.' 'I want that big buy nailed and I don't care who you are. You try again, pal,' he said, pointing at the camera. 'It was not legit, it was a scam … Do not answer any text message or phone number that you do not recognize. You do not answer it. You do not respond to it.' What makes Wise's case especially alarming is that he says the accused didn't just text or call him, he came right to his front door to pick up the cash. Here's what happened. Wise says on May 9 he received a text that looked like a fraud alert from Apple. It read: "Apple pay alert. Your Apple ID was recently used at 'APPLE STORE' for 213.33 USD paid by Apple Pay. If it's not you call 1 805 236 9601, to cancel the charge." He called the number and spoke to a man who said his name was 'John Cooper' and that the charges on Wise's Apple ID totaled $27,000. 'He said I had to go and withdraw $27,000 from my bank account immediately or it was going to be drained,' said Wise. After Wise failed to deposit the funds into a Bitcoin machine, "Cooper" said he would send someone to Wise's house to collect the money in person. After the funds were handed over, Wise called the sheriff's office. He was instructed to stay in contact with "Cooper" so that he could be caught. Detectives launched a sting operation and arrested 42-year-old Liwei Zhang, who showed up again at Wise's house to collect more money. Zhang has since been indicted on theft, identity fraud and telecommunications fraud charges, reports WBNS 10TV. The sheriff's office told the news network this is the second case this year of scammers showing up in person to collect money. 'It's getting a little more dangerous,' said Col. Chris Barbuto. 'We're not just online anymore — we are face-to-face.' According to the report, Zhang told authorities he was living in the U.S. on a business visa. He also claimed he was just a middleman and had been involved in other scams. 'Based on his bank records, which we have frozen, there are likely other victims out there — we just haven't identified them yet,' said Licking County Prosecutor Jenny Wells to the news network. Read more: Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? Dave Ramsey says — and that 'anyone' can do it Scams like this often start with a text that looks like it's from an organization you may expect to hear from, like Apple, Amazon, your bank, or even the IRS. The message may warn of suspicious account activity or an urgent charge and then tell you to call a number or click a link to fix the issue. From there, scammers pressure you to send money through untraceable methods like Bitcoin, gift cards, wire transfers, or, increasingly, in person. Red flags to watch out for include: Urgent language or threats ('Act now or your account will be closed.') Requests for payments in untraceable methods like cash, crypto, or gift cards Calls or texts from numbers you don't recognize Messages with grammatical errors or awkward formatting If you do receive a suspicious text, here's what you should do: Don't respond: If you get a suspicious message, don't call the number or click any links. Verify independently: If the message claims to be from your bank, Apple, or another company, contact them directly using the official website or phone number, not the one in the message. Never give remote access: No legitimate company will ask to take control of your device or request login credentials. Never pay strangers: Real companies and government agencies will never ask for payment in Bitcoin or cash pickups at your house. Report the message: Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM), report it on the messaging app you use, and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and your local law enforcement agency. If you think you've been scammed, call your bank immediately to flag any suspicious activity. Then, file a police report and a fraud report with the FTC. New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. Meme coins can be a tempting investment. They're a colorful form of cryptocurrency that can swing higher and lower at a moment's notice — offering the potential for outsize gains. However, with those large swings also come risks, which can turn some investors off. 'Memecoins, in general, get a lot of hate, but I do think it is a good way of onboarding the general public to the usage of crypto,' Charles St. Louis, CEO of DELV, which builds crypto infrastructure for investors, told The Post. 'Whether they learn a lesson of it, a loss or something, they still get some interest in the technology and I think having skin in the game is what allows you to fall down the rabbit hole of understanding why it's so good,' St. Louis added. So how do you know if meme coins are the right investment for you – and how can you find the best ones? Are You Crypto Curious? How to start crypto trading today Best Wallet Download a trusted exchange app — Start by choosing a licensed crypto exchange. We recommend starting with the Best Wallet app, available for both iOS and Android. Create and verify your account — Sign up using your email, Google, or Apple ID. To complete registration, you'll need to verify your identity with a government-issued ID and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security. Fund your account — Deposit money into your account by linking a bank account or credit card or even using gift cards. Choose an option that best fits your lifestyle. Buy your first cryptocurrency — Use the app's marketplace or swap tool to purchase crypto by entering the ticker symbol — like BTC for Bitcoin or ETH for Ethereum — and follow the prompts to complete the transaction. Choose how to store your crypto — Decide whether you'll keep your crypto in the exchange, move it to a digital wallet (hot wallet), or store it offline (cold wallet) for extra protection. LEARN MORE A meme coin is a type of cryptocurrency, or digital cash, that is usually pegged to a humorous image or text, like an inside joke for the internet. Many meme coins are based on animal-related memes, like funny images of cats and dogs. While these cryptocurrencies often start out as jokes, they can gain substantial attention and market value overnight. It goes without saying, then, that these same coins are often very volatile – so they can result in big losses for inexperienced investors. Like other cryptocurrencies, meme coins sit on a foundational layer known as a blockchain, which is a digital, tamper-proof ledger that can record, verify and transfer data. Meme coins are a form of cryptocurrency tied to a humorous image or text that's gone viral online. NurPhoto via Getty Images There's no shortage of meme coins available for those interested in investing. Some of the most popular meme coins include Dogecoin, Pepe, dogwifhat – a comical abbreviation of 'dog with hat' – and POPCAT, which are all based on animal memes. 'These projects have built strong followings and remain active across social channels – a critical factor in meme coin success,' Daniel Polotsky, co-founder and chairman of global crypto kiosk CoinFlip, told The Post. There are smaller meme coins that have been gaining attention, too, like American Coin and Giga Chad, but these are 'highly speculative plays and should be approached with caution,' Polotsky added. Dogecoin, arguably the most popular meme coin, is based on an image of a Shiba Inu dog. It opened in 2013 and hit an all-time high of $0.7376 in May 2021 – meaning a hypothetical $100 investment in the coin when it launched would have been worth nearly $250,000 at its peak. The coin's success was due, in part, to outspoken support from Elon Musk on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Dogecoin tumbled recently during Musk's public feud with President Trump. Many meme coins are based on animal-related memes, like dogwifhat — based on an image of a dog wearing a hat. SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images President Trump launched his own meme coin on the Solana blockchain in January, just a few days before he took office for his second term. Known as $TRUMP, the coin was made in his likeness. A similar Melania Trump meme coin called $MELANIA launched at the same time. The $TRUMP coin made an estimated $100 million in trading fees by Jan. 30, less than two weeks after its launch, as it skyrocketed amid his inauguration. The digital currency enjoyed another boost in April when it announced that its top holders would be invited to a private dinner with the president. The announcement helped raise the value of the meme coin by more than 40%, partially reversing an 88% slump from the weeks prior. The top holders of the meme coin spent as little as $53,500 to as much as $16.4 million to grab an invite to the dinner, according to data analytics firm Inca Digital. Around 2 million wallets have purchased the meme coins. Nearly 60 of these wallets have made more than $10 million each – while around 764,000 wallets have lost money on the investments, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis shared with CNBC. Some of the most popular meme coins include Dogecoin (illustration above), Pepe, dogwifhat and POPCAT. REUTERS Due to their volatile nature, the best meme coins to invest in are constantly changing. Investors looking to find the next Dogecoin before it soars should spend time staying up to date on trends in the industry. And not all meme coins are created equal. Some are much riskier investments than others. 'The more trustworthy meme coins tend to be the ones with transparent teams, consistent communication and strong, engaged communities,' Polotsky told The Post. President Trump launched a meme coin in his likeness in January. NurPhoto via Getty Images Since meme coins trade purely off public sentiment, social media sites like X and Reddit can be useful tools to stay informed on up-and-coming coins. 'These are the spaces where meme coins live or die – sometimes overnight,' Polotsky said. Sites like CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap can also help investors assess potential investments, showing market cap, trading volume and other key indicators for meme coins. Market cap is an especially important factor. Coins with lower market caps can offer potentially larger returns, but also carry much higher risk, Polotsky said. Meme coins with larger market caps are more stable but come with less growth opportunity. Whether or not meme coins are the right investment for you depends largely on your experience as an investor and your openness to risk. Meme coins can be a great addition to a broader crypto portfolio, but should never make up the bulk of an investor's assets, Polotsky warned. 'Their value is often more social than financial,' Polotsky told The Post. 'As a general rule, allocating more than 5% to 10% of your portfolio to meme coins is probably already pushing into risky territory.' More experienced cryptocurrency investors might be able to withstand more risk, so these high-risk, high-reward bets could be a good option for them. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump promoted their meme coins on social media. Anadolu via Getty Images 'These investors typically understand market cycles, know how to read community signals, and can stay emotionally detached from the wild swings that meme coins are known for,' Polotsky said. But newbie crypto investors may want to steer clear of the volatile investments. A common mistake with new investors is that 'they feel like they missed the boat with Bitcoin,' Ben Weiss, co-founder and chief executive of CoinFlip, told The Post. 'So then they buy some of these smaller coins, like these meme coins that are like four cents a coin, thinking it'll be the next Bitcoin, and those coins are usually four cents for a reason,' Weiss continued. Polotsky said new investors should view meme coins like venture-style investing: 90% to 99% of them may fail, but the right one could deliver outsized returns. New York Post Approved Our Top Pick.
