Police nab man who drove off with special needs girl in Penaga
KEPALA BATAS: Police have arrested a man who fled in a vehicle with a 12-year-old special needs girl in Penaga on Friday (June 20). Seberang Perai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred around 5.30pm when the girl's mother had gone to her husband's workshop to deliver engine oil, leaving her daughter in the car with the engine still running. "However, when the woman, who is in her 40s, returned to the vehicle, she discovered that both the car and her daughter were missing. She then used a location tracking app to locate her phone, which was with her daughter, and found it was in the Bagan Lalang area of Butterworth," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). He added that based on this information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Seberang Perai Utara district police headquarters, together with personnel from the Butterworth police station, managed to arrest a suspect and recover both the victim and the vehicle. He said checks revealed that the suspect, who is in his 60s, has a criminal record with seven cases and 11 drug-related cases. "The victim is in good condition and did not sustain any injuries. She was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital for a medical examination," he added. Anuar said that further investigations are ongoing. The case is being investigated under Sections 379A and 363 of the Penal Code. 12-year-old disabled girl rescued after car theft in Penang
BUTTERWORTH: A 12-year-old disabled girl was rescued unharmed in Butterworth after the vehicle she was left in was stolen from her father's workshop in Penaga late yesterday afternoon. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm, when the girl's mother briefly exited the car to deliver engine oil to her husband's workshop. He said the vehicle's engine had been left running with the child inside. "Upon returning, the mother was shocked to find the car and her daughter gone. "A search was immediately launched by the family with help from a friend. "Unable to locate the vehicle, the mother used the Life360 app to track her mobile phone, which was with the girl, and traced the location to Bagan Lalang, Butterworth. "Police from the district's Criminal Investigation Department, assisted by officers from the Butterworth police station, responded swiftly and successfully apprehended a male suspect in his 60s," he said in a statement at midnight today. Anuar said, fortunately, the girl was found safe and uninjured. "She was immediately brought to Kepala Batas Hospital for a thorough medical examination," he said. Anuar said preliminary checks revealed the suspect had a record of seven criminal offences and eleven drug-related offences. The case is being investigated under Section 379A (theft of a motor vehicle) and Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Penal Code. Authorities are continuing their investigation to complete the case file. Man nabbed after high-speed chase, found with suspected drugs
BUTTERWORTH: A man was arrested following a high-speed chase in the Bagan Dalam area here last night, after he allegedly attempted to flee from policemen and obstructed civil servants in the performance of their duties. The incident, which happened at about 10pm yesterday, came to light after a video of the chase went viral on social media. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said policemen from the motorcycle patrol unit of the district police headquarters had ordered a suspicious locally manufactured vehicle to stop three times using beacon lights and sirens. He said the driver, however, ignored the instructions and sped off. "The suspect was eventually apprehended in front of the Ampang Jajar Flats in Butterworth. "A body search revealed a transparent plastic packet believed to contain syabu. "A subsequent urine test revealed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement tonight. The suspect has been remanded for four days until June 23 for investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Anuar said a background check also revealed that the suspect had three prior drug-related offences. He urged the public not to sensationalise the incident, warning that it could disrupt public order and interfere with the ongoing investigation.
