Man arrested after R18m cocaine, arms and ammunition found in Cape Town storage facility

A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a massive stash of drugs, firearms and ammunition found in a storage facility in Cape Town. Fifteen bricks of cocaine worth an estimated R18 million were found, as well as one AK47 rifle, an Uzi, five 9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition. The man was arrested for allegedly dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with a cache of arms, ammunition and drugs found in a storage unit in the heart of Cape Town's city bowl. Cocaine and weapons worth millions of rand were found at the storage facility in Roeland Street. Officers from the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence, and provincial organised crime detectives arrested the man for allegedly dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said: 'They conducted a search of the unit upon which they discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15 kilograms (1kg each) with an estimated street value of R18 million as well as one AK47 rifle, an Uzi, five 9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.' The man is scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court. Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile said: 'SAPS remains resolute to eradicate drug abuse and the prevalence of firearms which poses a threat to the safety of communities in the Western Cape.' Earlier this year, Western Cape police confiscated mandrax tablets worth more than R5.5 million in two busts over three days. Anti-Gang Unit officers uncovered R4 million worth of mandrax at a 'stronghold of one of the major gangs' in Mitchells Plain. In a separate incident days later, police searched a car on the N1 highway and found a consignment of mandrax tablets valued at around R1.5 million. At the time, Patekile said the prevalence of drugs in the Western Cape was 'problematic' and was linked to gang activity. He said there was a link between the drug trade, illegal firearms and gangsterism. Crime expert Guy Lamb previously told News24 that while mandrax was often circulated on the local market, other drugs - such as cocaine and heroin - often moved through the country, destined for other, wealthier markets. Gangs play a key role in both the arrival of drugs into the local market, the sale of those drugs, as well as the transportation of drugs through the country to other markets, he said. The ENACT Organised Crime Index for Africa, produced by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC), found that the cocaine trade in southern Africa was growing, and South Africa was at the heart of the illicit market. The global crime index's report described South Africa as 'a key player in the global cocaine trade'. South Africa also has the highest prevalence of cocaine consumption in Africa, the report found.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola has condemned the attack on members of the Anti-Gang Unit conducting routine operations in Westbury, Johannesburg, on Tuesday. Their operations included stop-and-search efforts in Steytler Street. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the officers came under attack when they arrested a man for possession of drugs. 'Members immediately placed the suspect under arrest, and that is when community members started mobilising themselves and throwing rocks and bottles at police officers,' she said. 'Members tactically withdrew from the operation, ensuring the safety of the very community that was attacking them.' Mathe added that no officers were injured and no vehicles were damaged and said the officers 'tactically withdrew' after discharging a warning shot. Masemola expressed disappointment in the conduct of Westbury residents, who have frequently raised concerns about crime in the area, including turf wars between drug dealers and traffickers. 'The community of Westbury have from time to time been complaining about the high levels of crime, including drug dealing, in the area,' Masemola said. Ex-Mandela bodyguard and Anti-Gang Unit boss Andre Lincoln dies

Former top cop and late president Nelson Mandela's former bodyguard, Major-General Andre Lincoln, died on Friday morning. Lincoln has been remembered for his service in fighting crime. He was the head of the Anti-Gang Unit before his 2021 retirement. Former Anti-Gang Unit boss Major-General Andre Lincoln died on Friday morning. Lincoln was one of late former president Nelson Mandela's bodyguards and was appointed as the Head of the Presidential Investigation Task Unit in 1996. He also served as a Cluster Commander and later as Head of the Anti-Gang Unit, where he contributed to police efforts to tackle the scourge of gang violence in the Western Cape. Provincial MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, sent her condolences to the family, friends and the law enforcement fraternity. Marais said: 'Major-General Lincoln's contribution to improving safety in the Western Cape will continue to form part of the legacy he leaves behind after serving in the SAPS for over 39 years. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.' Lincoln retired in 2021. He was made head of the Anti-Gang Unit in 2018 after a career of ups and downs. Former police boss Jeremy Vearey said Lincoln's death had been a shock. 'Our paths started together long before we joined the police,' he said. Both had worked together in the armed struggle, and Lincoln had supported Vearey after his release from Robben Island in the 1990s. 'Andre was there when I was released from Robben Island. Some of us, as political prisoners, needed protection. Comrades like Lincoln were there for us,' Vearey recalls. The two had worked together guarding Mandela, and Vearey recalled Lincoln's excellent evasive driving skills that had kept Mandela safe on numerous occasions. 'We were soldiers on the ground, defending our movements. I know him from battle, from blood, as a comrade for whom I would lay my life down,' he said. He described Lincoln as a 'humble man' who had a 'core strength' and demonstrated a 'zen-like calm' that was likely born of many years of practising martial arts. He also had a love for bonsai. 'Andre had a bonsai, which produced a micro pomegranate. It's one thing to look after your bonsai; it's another thing to have the patience to get it to bear fruit. That is understanding, a relationship with nature, that is almost spiritual.' In an outpouring of tributes on social media, Lincoln was described as a 'soldier' who lived a 'life of serving'. 'Thank you for putting your life at risk for us, the general public. Your dedication in the line of duty is beyond the call of duty, and we are immeasurably indebted to you,' said one social media user. Posted by Nikki Lincoln on Thursday, May 29, 2025 Lincoln and former Crime Intelligence chief Peter Jacobs were embroiled, with Vearey, in allegations of misconduct in one of the most recent controversies. One of the allegations against Lincoln and Jacobs was whether they responded appropriately to an informant who warned that AGU detective Charl Kinnear's life was in danger. Kinnear was murdered outside his house on 18 September 2020. Lincoln had previously faced 47 criminal charges and was convicted of 17 of these in 2003. He then appealed the conviction and was acquitted on all the charges, according to a previous News24 report. Lincoln was also among a number of senior police officers whose phone location was tracked, allegedly by former rugby player Zane Kilian, who is among those charged, along with Nafiz Modack, for the murder of Kinnear.

Petition presented to parliament demanding action on gang violence in northern areas

Gang violence plaguing Nelson Mandela Bay's northern areas reached the national stage on Wednesday as a damning petition was presented to parliament's police portfolio committee, demanding urgent intervention to halt the bloodshed. The petition, spearheaded by DA MPL and constituency leader Yusuf Cassim, outlined the brutal toll of gang warfare in the region and called for a multi-pronged national response. Addressing the committee, Cassim asked for the deployment of elite detectives from across the country and the reinforcement of the Anti-Gang Unit. He also asked for crime intelligence capabilities to be expanded and an investment to be made in surveillance technologies like drones, CCTV and ShotSpotter systems. Senior SAPS officials, including police minister Senzo Mchunu, were present at the hearing, where Cassim detailed the grim statistics — more than 1,000 gang-related killings have been documented by Nelson Mandela Bay residents from 2019 to April 2025. In 2024 alone, there were 244 killings, with August 2024 marking the deadliest month ever recorded. In the 2023/2024 financial year, 148 gang-related shootings were reported — 114 in the northern areas — resulting in 62 deaths, 17 of them children. More than 82 people were injured in the same period, including 28 children. Between 2021 and 2023, the region suffered 361 gang-related shootings, with 319 occurring in the northern areas. These attacks left 180 dead — including 22 children — and injured 181 more. Attempted murder charges reached 227, the vast majority also in the northern areas. Yet despite this grim tally, arrests remain shockingly low. In the 2024/2025 financial year, only 19 arrests were made in 16 murder cases. The petition also requested that the portfolio committee conduct more frequent oversight visits and engage directly with affected communities. Committee chair Ian Cameron assured the hearing that the petition would be treated with the seriousness it demands. In response, the committee undertook to draft a formal report containing actionable recommendations. Once adopted, the report will be tabled in the National Assembly and carry the weight of a parliamentary resolution — binding on Mchunu to implement. 'This hearing was a milestone,' Cassim said. 'Now comes the test of follow-through. 'We will not rest until parliament's resolutions become tangible action in our communities. 'Section 12 of the constitution is clear: our people have the right to be free from all forms of violence. 'They deserve to feel safe in their own homes, on their streets, and in their schools.'
