Important to recognise contribution of Pataudi to Indian cricket: Sachin Tendulkar after trophy rename
CHENNAI: WHEN Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes walk out for the toss at Headingley on Friday morning, India and England will be playing for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Named after two stalwarts, this will be replacing the Pataudi Trophy which came into existence in 2007 in the honour of former India captains Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, who also played for England in the 1930s, and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. Ahead of the 2025 edition, the England Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) came together to name it after Tendulkar and Anderson (the two nations play for the Anthony de Mello Trophy in India). One of the greatest batters ever, Tendulkar holds the record for most runs (15921), matches (200) and centuries (51) in Tests. Anderson (188) is only second to Tendulkar in number of matches while holding the record for most Test wickets as a fast bowler (704). On the eve of the series opener, Tendulkar expressed his gratitude and the honour in having a trophy named after him. "The first time I got to know about it was some time last month, where ECB and BCCI decided to name this trophy after both of us. It's a nice recognition, I thought of our contributions to our respective nations in Test cricket," Tendulkar said in a virtual interaction.

Sachin Tendulkar breaks silence on 'Pataudi Trophy' controversy, says...
Sachin Tendulkar. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The Pataudi Trophy, which is given to the team winning the India-England Test series, has now been renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. That is, in the upcoming Test series starting on June 20, both the teams will face each other to win the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shared a photo of the inauguration of this trophy, in which Anderson-Tendulkar are standing with the trophy. Sachin Tendulkar has made a big revelation and told who he called first when the name of the Pataudi Trophy was changed. The name of Pataudi Trophy has changed but…: The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a joint initiative between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will now represent all future Test series between England and India. Previously, series in England were played for the Pataudi Trophy and in India for the Anthony de Mello Trophy. However, the Pataudi family will continue to be honoured and a new Pataudi Medal will be awarded to each winning captain of an England-India Test series. The trophy features an image of Anderson and Tendulkar in action, along with their autographs. Two cricketing icons. One special recognition The legendary Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson pose alongside the new – #TeamIndia | #ENGvIND | @sachin_rt | @jimmy9 — BCCI (@BCCI) June 19, 2025 Sachin Tendulkar revealed: Let us tell you that recently BCCI and ECB have decided to change the name of the series. The name of this series was kept different from 'Pataudi Trophy'. This name was kept in honor of former Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan 'Tiger' Pataudi. Cricket experts and fans reacted strongly to the decision to remove the name Pataudi. After this, Sachin Tendulkar spoke to both the boards and appealed to continue the legacy of Pataudi. Now Tendulkar has revealed that when he came to know about the change of Pataudi Trophy, he first called the Pataudi family. After this, he called ICC President and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah to keep Pataudi's legacy intact. Tendulkar said in an interview, 'When I came to know, I called the (Pataudi) family and talked. After this, I spoke to Jay Shah, BCCI and ECB and told them that something should be done to keep the legacy intact.' 'The legacy should remain intact': Tendulkar said that Pataudi's legacy should remain intact. He said, 'First of all, the decision to retire the trophy was of BCCI and ECB. They told me about it only after taking the decision. As far as the Pataudi family is concerned, I am aware of their contribution to Indian cricket. Pataudi Senior played for England and India, while Tiger Pataudi captained India brilliantly. I did not see them play, because I was not born, but I have heard stories and those stories inspire all of us. So I was determined to ensure that the legacy is maintained.' Two great Test cricketers, Anderson-Tendulkar: Anderson and Tendulkar are both considered the greatest of all time. They are the players who have played the most matches in the history of Test cricket. Tendulkar played 200 matches, while Anderson played 188 matches. Anderson took 704 Test wickets, the most by a fast bowler in this format. He is third on the all-time list, behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. Sachin Tendulkar, on the other hand, remains the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15921 runs. He made his debut at the age of 16 and enjoyed a stellar 24-year international career. During this time, he played a key role in India's success against every other Test-playing country. What did Tendulkar-Anderson say? James Anderson said at the trophy inauguration, 'It is a matter of pride for me and my family to have this prestigious series named after Sachin and me. The rivalry between our two countries has always been something special, full of history, intensity and unforgettable moments. It is truly an honor to be recognized in this way. I look forward to the next chapter in England this summer. It promises to be fascinating, competitive cricket. Exactly what you would expect from two great teams.' Sachin Tendulkar said, 'For me, Test cricket is a symbol of life. You give your best and if things go wrong, it gives you another day to regroup, think, forget and bounce back. It is the highest form of the game that teaches you endurance, discipline and adaptability despite all odds. I credit Test cricket for my foundation, as it has seen me move from despair to victory to aspirations to perfection.'

A Tribute to Two Modern Icons The newly revealed trophy bears the names, images, and signatures of Sachin Tendulkar, cricket's all-time highest run-scorer, and James Anderson, the most prolific fast bowler in Test history. Together, the two represent longevity, excellence, and the highest standards in cricket. This medal will be awarded to the captain of the series-winning team, ensuring that Pataudi's contributions are not forgotten but honored in a new format. Why the Change? Previously, India and England competed for two different trophies: the Pataudi Trophy (in England) and the Anthony de Mello Trophy (in India). With this renaming, there will now be one unified trophy, the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, for all India–England Test series. This move simplifies the rivalry's identity and raises its global stature.

The trophy was supposed to be unveiled earlier on 14 June during a special ceremony on the sidelines of the ICC World Test Championship Final at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground. It replaces the Pataudi Trophy, which had been introduced in 2007 on the 75th anniversary of the Indian team's maiden Test – against England at Lord's in 1932 – as well as the Anthony de Mello Trophy, which has been in existence since 1951. The Pataudi and the Anthony de Mello trophies were awarded to the winners of an India-England Test series hosted in England and India respectively. Ahmedabad Plane Crash: India vs England Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Launch Event Put Off After Tragedy
England and India will square in a five-match Test series, starting November 20. The iconic rivalry will now be played for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, re-named in honour of two of the game's greatest legends- James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. Until now, India and England played for different trophies depending on the host nation. In England, the Pataudi Trophy, named after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, was awarded. In India, the series was contested for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after a founding figure of Indian cricket administration. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was set to be unveiled on Day 4 of the World Test Championship final between South Africa and Australia at Lord's. However, the unveiling has now been postponed. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the decision to defer the event comes in the wake of the Ahmedbad plane crash. "Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost)," a very high ranked ECB official told Cricbuzz on Saturday. Both the BCCI and ECB officials are deciding on a flexible new date. "The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy," an ECB official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. Only one person survived the horrific accident on Thursday afternoon when London-bound Air India flight AI-171, carrying 242 passengers including crew members, crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel International Airport. A minute's silence was also observed at Lord's before the play got underway on the third day of the WTC final. On Saturday, South Africa defeated Australia by five runs in the final to lift the ICC WTC title. It was South Africa's first ICC title triumph since the 1998 KnockOut Trophy (now known as Champions Trophy).
