Russia Successfully Launches "Angara-A5" Rocket from Plesetsk Cosmodrome

Moscow - Saba: The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the heavy-lift "Angara-A5" rocket was successfully launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region, carrying a spacecraft on board. "On June 19, 2025, the Angara-A5 launch vehicle, carrying a spacecraft, was launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome (Arkhangelsk region) on behalf of the Russian Ministry of Defense," the statement said. The statement noted that this marks the tenth launch in the history of the Angara rocket series. Since 2014, five light "Angara-1.2" rockets and three heavy "Angara-A5" rockets have been launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. Additionally, another heavy rocket was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in April 2024. The Russian state space agency "Roscosmos" has signed a government contract with the Khrunichev Center for the production of three "Angara-A5M" rockets, which are intended for launching modules of the new Russian space station, according to a statement from the agency. The statement, dated June 6, mentioned that the upgraded version will be capable of placing spacecraft weighing up to 27 tons into orbit, compared to the standard Angara-A5, which can carry only up to 24 tons. Roscosmos also stated that the Angara-A5M will be adapted in the future for launching crewed spacecraft. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

Marcos echoes frustration over Senior High School, says system has ‘no advantage'

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. expressed frustration with the current Senior High School (SHS) curriculum under the K to 12 program, saying it burdens parents financially without offering clear benefits to students. In the latest episode of the BBM Podcast, Marcos responded to Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada's call to reassess the basic education system by possibly removing SHS. Marcos said Estrada's concern reflects his own sentiments. 'It's costing parents more because of the additional two years, and there's no clear advantage. SHS graduates still struggle to find jobs,' Marcos said in Filipino. While noting that Congress holds the authority to amend or repeal the law mandating K to 12, the President said that improvements must continue in the meantime. 'I told Secretary Sonny Angara: let's improve it as much as we can while it's still in place,' he added. Education Secretary Angara recently admitted shortcomings in SHS implementation over the past decade. He cited an overloaded curriculum and limited student choice as key issues. 'There were too many subjects, and students were boxed in. They couldn't choose what subjects to take,' Angara said. Still, he emphasized that only Congress can decide the future of the SHS program. In August 2024, Marcos ordered a review and rationalization of the SHS curriculum to ensure graduates are better equipped for high-quality employment.

Learning crisis worsened by pandemic, says Angara

Department of Education Secretary Juan Edgardo 'Sonny' Angara has affirmed that the country remains embroiled in a worsening learning crisis, one intensified by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking during his visit at Esteban Abada Elementary School in Quezon City where the CLASS+ program was launched, Angara explained that many children are still unable to read after extended periods of homeschooling without teacher guidance. '100% nag-worsen,' he said, explaining that many children are still unable to read after extended periods of homeschooling without teacher guidance. 'Binigyan lang ng papeles…hindi nga sila marunong magbasa,' he added, clearly illustrating how paper-based home modules proved ineffective without foundational literacy. (They were given papers, yet they don't know how to read.) Angara pointed out that the crisis lies in the fact that 'students are not learning at the right level.' Referring to UNICEF's observations, he said, 'Yan ang nirefer nung UNICEF kaya tinawag nilang crisis kasi nakita nila ang mga bata, behind sila sa grade level nila.' (That was what UNICEF referred to ... that's why they called it a crisis. They saw the students are behind their actual grade level.) To address this, Angara said DepEd has implemented summer programs and is putting renewed focus on basic skills. 'Sinabi ng Presidente, mag-focus tayo sa basics.' (The President said we should focus on the basics.) In the first few days of school opening, Angara reported common problems encountered during visits to schools: 'May naririnig tayo mga ibang kulangan ng classroom, may incident ang bullying, yung iba binabaha.' (We've heard of lack of classrooms, incidents of bullying, flooding.) When asked how many classrooms have been constructed this year under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Angara replied, 'Wala pa po. Yung PPP nasa Department of Development pa.' — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

DepEd: Students should develop critical thinking to fight 'AI fakes'

Education Secretary Sonny Angara stressed the need to strengthen critical thinking skills among students in a bid to fight AI-generated 'fakes' online. 'Magaling talaga ang AI. So, kailangan maingat ang tao ngayon. Kailangang maging mapanuri at iyan ay gusto rin naming ituro sa eskwelahan. Iyan ay bahagi ng tinatawag nating critical thinking,' Angara said in an ambush interview on Wednesday. (AI is really good, so people need to be careful now. They need to be critical, and that is what we want to teach in school. That is part of what we call critical thinking.) The Department of Education (DepEd), meanwhile, is now working on establishing a dedicated AI research center to help Filipino learners understand and navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape. 'Hindi mo dapat bibigyan ng AI kung di pa siya marunong magbasa. Unahin muna ang pagbabasa,' Angara said, explaining that strong foundational skills like reading must come first before deeper technological integration. (You shouldn't give AI to him if he can't read yet.) He added that AI is already being used in schools through platforms like Khanmigo, which streamlines lesson planning for teachers. It is an AI-powered learning assistant developed by Khan Academy and made freely available to public school teachers and learners nationwide. Launched in the Philippines in December 2024, Khanmigo is helping students with math, reading comprehension and even personalized learning pathways. "Yung dati, dalawang araw, isang oras gawanan niya yung buong lesson plan,' he said. 'We (also) gave AI tutor to our teachers also so they can check if what they're teaching is correct. They can check themselves,' Angara added. The DepEd's push comes amid growing concerns about misinformation and disinformation campaigns that leverage realistic AI-generated content. With the school year underway, Angara emphasized that protecting students from digital deception is just as important as ensuring access to classrooms and basic learning resources. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos tasks DPWH to work on reconstruction of QC school building hit by fire

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. tasked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to work on the reconstruction of San Francisco High School in Quezon City that was damaged by fire. Marcos on Wednesday inspected the Dao Building, which was struck by fire last Sunday. Education Secretary Sonny Angara said that the DPWH has recommended the demolition of the damaged area and building a new structure. 'Ang recommendation po ng Department of Public Works is gibain na po 'yung istruktura at gumawa na po ng panibagong four-story, 36-classroom, na nagkakahalaga ng P180 billion,' Angara said in a separate interview. (The recommendation of the Department of Public Works is to demolish the structure and build a new four-story, 36-classroom building, which costs P180 billion.) Angara said the building would be finished in one year. The fire broke out in the school a day before the opening of classes for School Year 2025-2026. Fire authorities raised the first alarm at 10:52 a.m. The Bureau of Fire Protection eventually raised the third alarm. Firemen were able to put the fire under control before 12 noon. The said school is near a shopping mall, which was not affected by the blaze. According to Marissa Rodriguez, the school principal, investigation is still ongoing as regards the cause of the fire. The initial cost of damage was P3 million, according to Rodriguez. At least 600 students were affected by the fire, the principal said. She, however, ensured that the classes were not disrupted as they implemented double shifts for senior high school students. 'Actually hindi naman siya masyadong naapektuhan pero ang ginawa po namin kasi nakaplot po kasi ang senior high school na single shift kasi mayroon kaming enough classrooms for the senior high school,' Rodriguez said. (The classes weren't affected much, Since the senior high school had single shifts we have enough classrooms for the senior high school,) 'Ngayong nasunog po siya, we opted to revert to double shift para maaccommodate po 'yung mga bata na nawalan po ng classrooms,' she added. (After it burned down, we opted to revert to double shifts to accommodate the children who lost their classrooms.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News
