DC Co-Head James Gunn Says Corporate Demands ‘Killed' Marvel Studios
It's no mystery that Marvel Studios isn't as successful as they once were, and even critical hits like Thunderbolts* still managed to lose money at the box office. With that in mind, DC Studios co-head James Gunn weighs in on Marvel's current predicament, and he says it had something to do with corporate demanding that the studio increase their movie and TV output. Gunn tells Rolling Stone, 'That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. And it killed them.' With Gunn himself at the helm of DC and also having been on the creative side, he says that his studio is going to have a different approach when it comes to their comic book IP. He explains: 'We don't have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We're obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible. Nothing goes before there's a screenplay that I personally am happy with.' Currently there have been several projects announced for DC, but Gunn has confirmed that one has been cancelled because they couldn't get the script right. Even The Batman Part II from Matt Reeves has been constantly delayed, and we're barely getting information on the canon DCU Batman who is going to be directed by Andy Muschietti. On the Marvel side of things though, the studio has managed to slow down with their announcements. Though they're already backed into a corner with the next two Avengers films; fans are hoping that post- Secret Wars will mark a new era for Marvel Studios which will bring back the heyday and excitement of the Infinity Saga to audiences—which I personally doubt they can't replicate anymore in this industry climate. James Gunn Calls Batman His 'Biggest Issue' in the DCU, but Says 'I Think I Have a Way in' — GeekTyrant
As James Gunn prepares to kick off his vision of the DC Universe with Superman this July, there's one character looming larger than the rest… Batman. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn didn't shy away from admitting that Batman is his 'biggest issue' in crafting the new DCU, and not just because the character already has a critically acclaimed version running parallel in Matt Reeves' corner of Gotham. When asked if Robert Pattinson's Batman could eventually cross into the DCU, he said: 'It would be a consideration. We'd have to think about it. We'd have to think about it. It is not like we've never discussed it. I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it's not likely. It's not likely at all.' And for fans wondering that The Batman: Part II has been tossed aside for Gunn's new universe, he had a direct response: 'Batman Part II is not canceled. That's the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It's not canceled. We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.' Meanwhile, Gunn and The Flash director Andy Muschietti are developing The Brave and the Bold , a separate Batman project based on Grant Morrison's run. This version introduces a new Bruce Wayne and his son that he's unaware of. The film is still early in development, and Gunn isn't writing it himself, but he's deeply involved in getting the tone and purpose right. he explained: 'Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally. And it's not — I'm not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he's incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. 'So outside of the stuff that I'm doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.' The challenge for Gunn isn't just making another Batman movie, it's figuring out why this Batman needs to exist in the DCU at all. 'Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can't just be 'Oh, we're making a Batman movie because Batman's the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,' which he is. But because there's a need for him in the DCU and a need that he's not exactly the same as Matt's Batman.' Gunn also has no interest in swinging the pendulum back to a lighter campy take on the character:. 'He's not a campy Batman. I'm not interested in that. I'm not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really.' Still, despite all the complications, Gunn sounds optimistic. 'We're dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it's — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.' I'm excited to see what Gunn and Muschietti are going to deliver with with this new Batman movie, but it's gonna be a while before anything is revealed about it.

'IT: Welcome To Derry' First Trailer Released
The success of 2017's IT and 2019's IT: Chapter Two were felt worldwide as they kicked off a new wave of Stephen King adaptations. Now Warner Bros. Discovery is circling back to IT with the all-new prequel series IT: Welcome to Derry which will dive into the rich history of Derry and the sinister events that happened prior to the films released in 2017 and 2019. Fans can see the full trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry below. Of course, with Welcome to Derry being a prequel series, it moves away from the time periods depicted in the previous films. Instead, it will revolve around a new cast of characters played by Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider. Although actor Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role as Pennywise for the series as well. Here's the full official trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry : Fans have been hearing about this series for several years now, so it's exciting to finally have a full trailer for the show. Especially as we approach nearly a decade since IT was released in theaters in 2017, there has been plenty of time for this new take on Pennywise to become an iconic part of the modern horror genre, and now we'll finally be able to see more of his origins. IT and IT: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti developed the new series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. The first season will take place in 1962, with each additional season moving backward in time, as the plan is to have the second season take place in 1935 with the third in 1908. The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry is scheduled to be released on HBO later this year for a total of nine episodes. Gold Derby's for May 20, 2025. It: Welcome to Derry, HBO Max's upcoming prequel series based on Stephen King's novel and Andy Muschietti's film adaptations, got its first trailer. Pennywise the Dancing Clown emerges every 27 years to feed on the children of Derry, and the show tells the story of the class of 1962 — 27 years before the events of It Chapter One. The cast includes Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and Taylour Paige, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise. Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs developed the series for television, with Andy Muschietti directing multiple episodes and Fuchs serving as showrunner alongside Brad Caleb Kane. The horror drama premieres this fall on HBO and HBO Max. Waithe will receive the award at the 2025 Humanitas Prizes Award Show & Toast on Sept. 7 at Avalon Hollywood. Writer and producer Mara Brock Akil, who gave Waithe one of her first jobs in Hollywood as her assistant on the set of Girlfriends, will present her with the award. CLASH, an animated comedy series based on studio Supercell's massively popular mobile games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, is coming to Netflix. Netflix released the trailer for Season 2 of action comedy series FUBAR. In Season 2, father-daughter CIA agents Luke Brunner (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Emma Brunner (Monica Barbaro, who picked up an Academy Award nomination between seasons) are back in action trying to stop a terrorist (Carrie-Anne Moss) — who also happens to be Luke's ex, with whom he still has great chemistry — from starting World War III. It's been a beat since Bill Skarsgård played Pennywise in both 'It' films (released in 2017 and 2019, respectively), but the 'Nosferatu' and 'The Crow' actor has wasted no time diving into the demonic terror of the Stephen King villain for prequel series 'It: Welcome to Derry.' The show is set in 1960s Derry, 27 years before Andy Muschietti's 2017 'It: Chapter One' film. Filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti developed the drama series 'Welcome to Derry' for television along with Jason Fuchs; Andy Muschietti is directing multiple episodes of the series. So what is 'Welcome to Derry' really about? It's safe to say that it could just be an origin story for Skarsgård's Pennywise with a new crop of kids to scare. The cast includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso. 'It: Welcome to Derry' is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti produce through their Double Dream production company, along with Fuchs, Skarsgård, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin who executive produce. Fuchs and Kane serve as co-showrunners on the project; Fuchs wrote the teleplay for the first episode. Skarsgård previously told Collider that it was 'surreal' how big of a success the 'It' films were. 'It became this completely universal thing, outside of the thing. That's not me. I can't even relate myself to it anymore,' Skarsgård said when reprising the role for the sequel film. 'And now that I'm going back and doing it, it's such a bizarre thing. I don't think I'll ever really experience anything like it. It's this dualistic thing of me and the work and the character, and then the thing that it became, but it's fun.' He added that it was easy to slip into the alter ego of the clown, too. 'I was surprised how much of the character was just there already,' he said. 'I instantly could access him again, like it was yesterday that we wrapped the first one. It was just all there. So, the work and preparation and figuring out the character is almost intuitive, which is pretty cool. It's a very strange thing, but I'm trying to enjoy the ride, as much as I can.'
