Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin claims he will meet Zelensky after Kyiv accuses him of rejecting ceasefire for 100 days
Vladimir Putin has claimed he is willing to meet Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky but only for a 'final phase' of talks. He told international news outlets in St Petersburg that he would only join the talks to finally 'put an end' to the conflict. It is not the first time - nor will it be the last - that Putin has supposedly signalled a desire to end the war. Ukraine and its western backers say he is simply playing for time, appealing to Donald Trump while continuing to relentlessly bomb Ukraine in the meantime. Dozens of civilians have been killed in Ukraine in recent weeks following a surge in Russian aerial attacks. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said this morning it had been 100 days of Russia 'manipulating … opportunities to end the war', referencing Kyiv 's acceptance of a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire back in March and Moscow 's refusal to agree to it. '100 days of Russian manipulations and missed opportunities to end the war. 100 days of Russia escalating terror against Ukraine rather than ending it,' Mr Sybiha wrote on X.

Ukraine says Russia has now been rejecting ceasefire calls for 100 days
Update: Date: 2025-06-19T07:35:30.000Z Title: Morning opening: 100 days later Content: US president Donald Trump had originally promised to stop the Russian invasion of Ukraine within 24 hours (or before!) of taking the office on 20 January. Well, it's been 149 days since then – and 100 days since Ukraine accepted the most recent US-backed offer of an unconditional ceasefire. Russian aggression, however, continues unabated. Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha marked the occassion, saying 'it has been exactly 100 days since Russia has been rejecting this basic first step towards peace.' When Nato meets in The Hague for its annual summit next week, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be hoping Trump sticks around long enough for that item to make it on to the agenda. European leaders may offer continued backing for Ukraine, but with the Israel-Iran situation evolving by the hour, it's tough to know what will happen by the end of the day – never mind next week. Whatever happens, I will bring you the latest here. It's Thursday, 19 June 2025, it's Jakub Krupa here, and this is Europe Live. Good morning.

Ukraine's foreign minister reacts to congratulations by some countries on Russia Day
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said he found it "unpleasant" to read the congratulations extended by "certain countries" on Russia Day. Source: Sybiha ahead of a Weimar Plus meeting in Rome, as reported by European Pravda Details: Sybiha did not explicitly name the countries in question. However, it is worth noting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio published an official message congratulating Russia on its national day. Quote: "As a minister of a country at war, it was especially unpleasant for me this morning to read the public congratulations from certain countries addressed to the Russian aggressor." Details: Sybiha added that he "has the moral right to voice this" and stated that "there can be no rewarding of an aggressor state". Background: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was challenged with a barrage of hard-hitting questions, including on Ukraine, during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the armed forces held on 11 June. Ukraine's foreign minister urges partners not to delay sanctions against Russia after latest strikes
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for an immediate increase in pressure on Russia through new sanctions following a Russian attack on the night of 9-10 June. Source: European Pravda, citing Sybiha on X (Twitter) Details: Sybiha said that on the night of 9-10 June, Kyiv and Odesa experienced what had been possibly the largest aerial attack since the beginning of the full-scale war, involving hundreds of UAVs and ballistic missiles. Quote: "Russians struck a maternity ward and ordinary residential buildings, killing and injuring civilians. Russia rejects any meaningful peace efforts and must face new, devastating sanctions. Already now. There is no more time to wait." Details: Sybiha stated that priority areas for this include Russian banks, lowering the G7-imposed gas price cap and secondary sanctions against those helping Russia circumvent restrictions. Quote: "These sanctions are not just intended to support Ukraine. They are essential to our partners. Such economic restrictions defund Russia's war machine, which is directed not only at us but also at them. Equally important are steps to strengthen Ukraine, especially additional supplies of air defence capabilities." Background: In recent days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that US President Donald Trump, as the "leader of the free world", must introduce sanctions against Russia, which launched the war of aggression. Senators Richard Blumenthal (Democrat) and Lindsey Graham (Republican), along with 80 co-authors, introduced a bill that would impose additional economic sanctions on Russia for refusing to agree to a ceasefire, including a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that buy Russian oil. The bill has support in the House of Representatives as well. However, according to media reports, Trump wants to weaken the sanctions bill. Publicly, Trump says he will impose new sanctions on Russia if necessary. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
