Weston Mazey joins Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League for the first half of the summer
MORGANTOWN – Morgantown High graduate and soon-to-be West Virginia Mountaineer, Weston Mazey, will have a rare opportunity this summer as he has joined the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in Anchorage, Alaska, of the Alaska Baseball League.
The Alaska Baseball League is affiliated with the National Baseball Congress and sends its top teams to compete in the NBC World Series each year. The Pilots have won the NBC World Series in 1969, 1971, 1986, 1991, and 2001. They were formed in 1969. Home games are played at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
Head Coach Ritch Price was the head coach at Kansas from 2003 to 2022, and Mazey says he couldn't say no when the opportunity arose.
'Originally, I was planning to go next summer, but Coach Price reached out and mentioned they had a bunch of players still in regionals,' Mazey said. 'He asked me if I wanted to come spend the month of June with them before I have to report to WVU, and I said yes in a heartbeat. I'm very excited for the opportunity.'
The roster comprises players from 11 different states, ranging from Alaska to Minnesota and West Virginia, as well as multiple colleges and universities at the Division I level. Players from Dallas Baptist, USC, and Fresno State are among the schools represented on the roster, to name a few.
One thing Mazey says he is most excited about is the chance to play in a baseball game during a day when daylight will be present for 24 hours.
'We actually play one game that is scheduled to start at midnight,' Mazey said. 'Sometimes it doesn't get dark over there near the end of the summer. I think it's June 22 or sometime around there when we will play that game.'
Mazey traveled to Anchorage over the weekend to join the Glacier Pilots.
