Amarnath Yatra: Facial Recognition System Flags First Suspect, Alleged OGW Detained Langanbal

In view of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2025, the Anantnag Police has enhanced security measures to ensure a safe and peaceful pilgrimage. As part of these initiatives, high-resolution Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras have been installed at multiple locations along the Pahalgam-to-cave route, including Langanbal Naka — a key checkpoint on the Yatra path. Today, during routine surveillance using the newly installed FRS, the system successfully flagged a suspicious individual whose facial data matched entries in the security database. Upon immediate verification and investigation, the individual was identified as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) affiliated with a terrorist outfit, according to a statement by Anantnag Police on X. The suspect was promptly taken into custody, and a detailed investigation is currently underway to ascertain his links and any potential threats. This successful identification and detention underscore the effectiveness of the Facial Recognition System in preemptive threat detection and maintaining public safety. The FRS, part of the enhanced security framework for the Yatra, has been deployed along the Pahalgam route and other paths leading to the holy cave. The system provides real-time alerts — including a hooter at the surveillance center — to identify blacklisted individuals, such as active terrorists and suspected OGWs, by analyzing facial features against a secure database. This technology-driven approach is aimed at ensuring a secure pilgrimage by deterring potential threats and strengthening surveillance across the Yatra corridors. The operation highlights the Anantnag Police's broader efforts to leverage technology for public safety during high-profile events like the Amarnath Yatra, especially amid heightened security concerns in the region.

In a first, suspect apprehended by using facial recognition technology: J&K Police

In a first, the J&K Police on Thursday (June 19, 2025) said the facial recognition system set up by the security forces in Anantnag's Langanbal checkpoint flagged a suspected over-ground worker (OGW), who was 'apprehended immediately for questioning'. 'The Anantnag Police, using the newly installed Facial Recognition System at Langanbal Naka, apprehended a suspected OGW flagged by the system. The individual is in custody. An investigation is under way,' a police spokesman said. It's for the first time the J&K Police held a suspect by using the high-end technology of facial recognition. The suspect was held near Pahalgam, which is one of the main yatra routes. The Amarnath yatra will start from July 3 from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Sonamarg in Kashmir. 'Safety of the Amarnath Yatra remains our top priority,' the police said. The latest move comes days after the Lieutenant Governor administration declared the twin routes as 'No Flying Zones' between July 1 and August 10 this year. According to the order, any kind of aviation platforms and devices including UAVs, drones, balloons, etc., is prohibited on both the Pahalgam axis (in south Kashmir) and Baltal axis (in central Kashmir). This year, the annual yatra comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead on April 22. The Baisaran meadow where the attack took place is adjacent to the yatra route in Pahalgam. Additional companies of the central reserve force have been deployed for the yatra this year.

Tourists feel 'safe' in J&K's Srinagar, Pahalgam deserted after attack

Amid heightened security following the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives, tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's (J-K) Srinagar say they feel safe and welcomed, crediting the warmth and support of locals. While Dal Lake remains lively with visitors enjoying the picturesque landscape of the valley, nearby Pahalgam appears deserted, with a heavy security presence replacing the usual tourist crowds. "I don't feel good about leaving today. I've had a great time here. The hoteliers have supported us throughout our stay. We felt no fear, and locals have been welcoming. Tourists must visit -- there is no fear as such," said Vikram Bhai Vyas, a tourist from Gujarat's Vadodara. Another tourist, Bakul Sharma, who came to Srinagar on April 21, said, "We feel completely safe. There are no issues. There is no fear. People planning a visit should come." Vaibhavi Vyas, also from Gujarat, said she felt reassured by the visible presence of army personnel in the region. However, visuals from Pahalgam's Baisaran valley -- the site of the attack -- tell a different story. Once teeming with tourists, the area now shows sparse movement, limited to a few civilians and patrolling security forces. Meanwhile, security agencies and Jammu and Kashmir authorities have intensified their crackdown on those linked to the attack. On Saturday, authorities demolished another residential structure at Chotipora village in Shopian district, allegedly linked to a terrorist, believed to be involved in the Pahalgam attack. Another house belonging to a suspect, identified as Zakir Ahmad Ganie, at Mutalhama village in Kulgam district was also demolished. Ganie has been active since 2023 and is believed to be directly involved in the attack. Earlier on Friday, the house of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Adil Thokar, also known as Adil Guree, was demolished. Adil Guree, a resident of Guree village in Bijbehara block of Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, is believed to have been involved in the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, including a Nepalese national, mostly tourists. He has been declared the most wanted, and the Anantnag Police have offered a reward of Rs 20 lakh for any specific information leading to his arrest. Two Pakistani nationals were also declared most wanted in the case. The attack on innocent civilians by terrorists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 22, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, while leaving several others injured, has caused a huge uproar across the nation. The Indian Army is on a high alert, launching several search operations to neutralise the terrorists following the attack in Pahalgam. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with widespread protests erupting across the country, demanding stricter action against Pakistan over the Pahalgam attack.

'False, hasty & part of an orchestrated campaign': LeT terror proxy TRF backtracks; denies responsibility of Pahalgam attack

The Resistance Front (TRF), a terror outfit widely regarded as a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has denied involvement in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead. In a statement circulated on social media, TRF refuted its earlier claim of responsibility for the massacre. #Pahalgam Terrorist Attack A 'water bomb' threatens India as it freezes IWT India readies short, mid & long-term Indus River plans Shehbaz Sharif calls India's stand "worn-out narrative" 'TRF unequivocally denies any involvement in the Pahalgam incident. Any attribution of this act to TRF is false and hasty,' the group said in the message. It further alleged that an unauthorised communication had been posted on one of its digital platforms due to a 'coordinated cyber intrusion.' The group claimed that an internal review had found indications of external tampering. 'Early indicators suggest fingerprints of Indian cyber-intelligence operatives,' TRF alleged, implying that the initial claim of responsibility was planted following a breach in their communications network. — Masoodch06 (@Masoodch06) The outfit added that it was undertaking a "full internal investigation" to determine the source of the purported breach. Live Events TRF had earlier this week issued a message claiming responsibility for the deadly attack, which targeted civilians at the tourist-frequented Baisaran meadows in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. However, the latest statement marks a sharp backtrack. ET couldn't independently verify the message released by the terrorist outfit. The Pahalgam attack is one of the deadliest civilian-targeted terror incidents in the Valley in recent years, sparking widespread condemnation across the country. Jammu and Kashmir Police intensifies anti-terror efforts Meanwhile, in India, the Jammu and Kashmir Police are working to intensify anti-terror efforts in the aftermath of the violent Pahalgam attack. Security operations have been ramped up across Anantnag district following the attack, with Anantnag Police coordinating closely with the Army, CRPF, and other agencies, according to an ANI report. The assault on April 22, which struck the tourist destination of Baisaran meadow, claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, and left several others injured. Since the attack, search and cordon operations have been expanded, with forces conducting day-and-night raids in multiple areas to track down those linked to terror networks. Officials said that around 175 individuals have been detained so far for questioning. In an effort to tighten security, authorities have increased the number of Mobile Vehicle Check Points (MVCPs) across the district, aiming to detect suspicious movement and enhance public safety. Security forces have also intensified Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs), staged ambushes, and boosted patrolling efforts, particularly in forested areas where terrorists could be hiding. Anantnag Police said they remain committed, alongside other security forces, to restoring normalcy and preventing any further disruption. They have appealed to residents to stay alert and report any unusual activity to the nearest police station. At the same time, heightened security measures are in place in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri region. Intensive vehicle checks are underway along the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway, with security personnel monitoring for any suspicious behavior. Additional troops have been deployed across key areas to deter potential threats. On Friday, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited Srinagar for the first time since the Pahalgam attack. During his visit, he reviewed the ground situation in the Union Territory and received briefings on counter-terror operations as well as on the activities of the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC).
