Thumba police arrest key links of drug racket with MDMA during hotel raid
Thiruvananthapuram: Thumba police arrested two individuals, who were identified as key links of a drug racket, with MDMA during a raid at a hotel in Attipra on Sunday. Police identified the arrested individuals as Ananthu, 29, of Panayil Veedu at Pangappara and Arya, 27, of Anjima Bhavan at Chadayamangalam. According to police, they stayed at various hotels across the state and sold drugs supplied to them from Bengaluru by others who are part of the racket. Police seized 10g of MDMA stored in several small packets that were concealed in the woman's hair during the raid. The duo had been staying at the hotel in Attipra for the past two days and the hotel staff, who became suspicious of the frequent visits of young men and women to their room, alerted the police. The accused were remanded after being produced before a court on charges under Section 22 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act-1985. "We have seized their mobile phones and the call details, chat history, etc., are being examined to find the other links in the racket. The racket brings drugs in huge quantities from Bengaluru for sale here. The accused will be taken into custody for detailed interrogation. We are yet to find out whether there are other NDPS cases registered against them in the past," said police. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Nilambur: Parties protest outside various offices following electrocution of Class X student by wild boar trap
MALAPPURAM: Nilambur witnessed a wave of protests on Monday, following the electrocution of a Class X student, Ananthu. Various parties held marches targeting different government offices, each placing blame on separate authorities for the incident. The CPM staged a protest in front of the Vazhikadavu panchayat office. Politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who led the march, accused the UDF-led panchayat administration of failing to act against the threat posed by wild boars. 'Panchayats are empowered to cull dangerous wild boars, but the Vazhikadavu panchayat has done nothing on that front. Now, the UDF is trying to politicise Ananthu's death in the name of the Nilambur by-election,' Vijayaraghavan said. Meanwhile, the UDF took out a march to the KSEB office in Nilambur. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan, who led the protest, criticised the CPM for targeting the panchayat instead of the KSEB, which he said bore actual responsibility. The BJP also took to the streets, marching to the forest department office.

Kerala: Death of 15-year-old in Nilambur sparks controversy ahead of bye-polls
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): With the Nilambur bye-polls just around the corner, the death of a 15-year-old from an illegal animal trap in the district has sparked controversy with Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday accusing the Kerala government of being negligent. 'Yesterday, a 15-year-old boy Ananthu was killed because he came into contact with a highly illegal electrified fence. As our minister, George Kurian said, he met the family, and he said that Ananthu is a martyr for the people of that region. It is clear that he is the victim of state government negligence, state government is covering up the incident that it's central government responsibility which is a lie,' the BJP's Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, told ANI. He accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of being negligent against a particular community, as he added, 'Maybe they feel that in Nilambur this particular community has never voted for them, and that is why I would charge them with deliberate negligence against a particular community.' He also said that the Union Environment Minister has made it clear that the state government has enough powers to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, without any interference from the Centre. 'Bhupender Yadav (Union Environment Minister) has made it absolutely clear that the state government had all the powers, and not only had it but used the power in the past in other municipalities and gram panchayats to kill wildlife and wild pigs who are causing harm to agriculture,' Chandrasekhar said. On the Kerala government claiming that there have been restrictions put on the state government, he added, 'it is a lie, a total falsehood, perpetuated by a government that has been bought, I have pictures of other incidents where they have used to powers to kill wild boars.' Earlier on Sunday, Union Minister George Kurian told ANI, 'A 15-year-old boy was killed by this illegal trap fixed by some people. The state government has failed to control this and is not taking any action. They keep blaming and say some laws should be amended. Kerala has totally failed to protect people living near forests. We are demanding a strong action.' Nilambur bye-polls are set to happen on June 19, with counting on June 29. The elections were necessitated after the resignation of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA, who stepped down in January after making several allegations against the Left government in the state. However, Anvar is going to contest the elections under the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) banner. Anvar will be going up against National Democratic Alliance candidate Michael George. The byelection has political significance as it is a precursor to next year's state assembly election and will test the popularity of the current government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan (ANI)

LDF, UDF continue blame game over boy's tragic death
The tragic electrocution of 15-year-old Ananthu from an illegal electric trap set for wild boars at Vazhikkadavu dominated the Nilambur Assembly byelection campaign for the second consecutive day on Monday with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) taking out protest marches to different centres. In a bid to gain political mileage from the tragedy, both of them blamed each other for the tragic accident. The LDF staged a protest outside the Vazhikkadavu panchayat office, while the UDF organised a march to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office at Vazhikkadavu, each trying to pin the responsibility on the other. The UDF pointed fingers at the KSEB, arguing that it was its responsibility to prevent power theft for illegal activities such as electric trapping of wild boars. The LDF countered that the onus lay with the local body. The blame game intensified with the UDF targeting the LDF-led State government and its agencies while the LDF targeted the UDF-ruled local body. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A. Vijayaraghavan, inaugurating the LDF march, attributed the incident to the failure of the Vazhikkadavu panchayat administration, stating that it had not implemented the existing protocol to cull wild animals causing crop damage. Mr. Vijayaraghavan accused the panchayat of colluding with those involved in illegally hunting wild boars. He said the UDF's efforts to make political capital out of the tragedy had boomeranged. K. Radhakrishnan, MP, CPI leader Satyan Mokeri, Alice Mathew, M.M. Varghese, V.P. Sanu, E. Jayan, T.M. Siddique, Jamsheer K., and M.T. Ali spoke. Inaugurating the UDF march, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the incident exposed the negligence of government departments. 'Ananthu's family and several other local residents had complained to the KSEB and the Forest department about the electricity theft for hunting wild animals, but no action was taken. It is a clear case of government negligence,' he said. Mr. Satheesan lashed out at the government for its inaction. 'The LDF's march to the panchayat office is a farce. The government does not provide funds for culling wild boars. Instead of blaming the panchayat, the LDF should protest outside the offices of the Forest and Electricity Ministers,' he said. UDF panchayat chairman Saidalavi Valassery presided over the function. A.K.M. Ashraf, Anvar Sadath, MLAs, Congress district president V.S. Joy and Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji spoke.

Kerala boy's death from electric trap becomes flashpoint in Nilambur bypoll
A 15-year-old boy's death by electrocution in Kerala's Nilambur has sent shockwaves through the state, exposing the deadly consequences of illegal wild boar traps set for profit in rural communities. The issue has also become a political flashpoint ahead of the Nilambur bye-election. According to a report by Onmanorama, five young boys were returning from a football match and heading towards a nearby stream on the evening of June 7. Unaware of an illegally installed electric fence along their path, one of the boys, Ananthu, came into contact with the live wires and was fatally electrocuted. In an attempt to save him, two of his companions also suffered electric shocks but managed to survive with injuries. Ananthu sustained severe burns to his abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries. Vineesh, the accused, and his companions, had allegedly installed the electrified trap to poach wild boars for meat. Charges of culpable homicide have been filed, and Vineesh has been arrested for further investigation. Nilambur electrocution case: Legal proceedings and charges Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Vineesh, charging him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has confirmed that the wire used for the deadly trap was illegally connected to the board's power line, constituting a violation of Section 135(1)(e) of the Electricity Act, 2003. Since the trap was intended for poaching wild animals, the case also invokes provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, underscoring long-standing concerns about illegal wildlife practices in the Nilambur region. Effect on Nilambur bye-election With the upcoming bye-election in Nilambur, the incident has quickly taken on a political dimension, sparking heated debates over government accountability. The constituency has been preparing for the polls following the defection of former Member of Parliament PV Anwar. Union Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath called the Nilambur tragedy a 'government-sponsored murder', citing the illegal tapping of electricity from the KSEB power line. Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M Swaraj strongly rebutted the accusation: 'The fact that they called it a government-sponsored murder immediately after it happened raises suspicion. This was an act by a private individual. How is the Forest Department or government to blame? They didn't even express sorrow — their first reaction was to attack the government.' Amid the heated exchanges, the Nilambur constituency remains on edge, with the tragedy injecting fresh intensity into the electoral battle. The bye-election is scheduled for June 19.
