Passenger associations demand coach watering facility, stabling lines on KRCL network in Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts
Railway patrons and passenger associations of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have planned to flag certain major concerns of the region, including lack of coach watering facility, stabling lines and upgradation of Udupi Railway Station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) with Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna when he visits Udupi district on Friday, June 13. The Railways was unable to start or terminate any train either at Karwar or Udupi as the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) has not provided coach watering facility in any of the stations in coastal Karnataka, regretted Kundapura Railway Prayanikara Samithi president Ganesh Puthran. While KRCL claims watering facility was available within about 350 km distance--at Mangaluru Junction and Madgaon--the possibility of operating trains towards Bengaluru via Padil Bypass without touching Mangaluru Junction gets affected. Therefore, KRCL should introduce coach watering facility either at Udupi or Kundapura Railway Station, Mr. Puthran demanded. He further said KRCL has not provided stabling lines at any of the stations on the entire Karnataka coast thereby making it difficult to stable trains for a few hours. Consequently, trains, either special or regular, have to resume return journey immediately thereby inconveniencing people, he noted. Stations development Besides urging the Railway Ministry to immediately sanction KRCL proposal to develop Udupi Railway Station under ABSS, Kundapura Railway Station too should be developed under the shceme, Mr. Puthran demanded. Also, important stations in coastal Karnataka lack adequate platform shelters as well as shelters for foot overbridges. KRCL should address this serious shortcoming on priority basis, he demanded. Uttara Kannada Railway Samithi Secretary Rajiv Gaonkar demanded low level second platforms at important stations, including Kumta and Gokarna Road, should be upgraded immediately for the benefit of passengers. Besides, there was no second platform at Barkur Railway Station near Brahmavara that causes severe misery to passengers if a train halts on the second line, he said. Mr. Gaonkar said the Ministry should forthwith implement its own decision, to extend Train No. 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru to Vasco da Gama so as to resume the lost connectivity between Karwar and Mysuru regions. He also demanded development of Karwar Station under Amrit Bharat Scheme.

40 highway projects worth Rs 65K cr underway in Kerala: Chandrasekhar
Thiruvananthapurm, May 23 (UNI) Forty highway projects worth Rs 65,000 crore are underway in Kerala, BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said. Kerala's highway network has seen a phenomenal growth over the decade, expanding from around 60,000 km to over 1.5 lakh km, the BJP chief said. Responding to the collapse of the under-construction six-lane NH66 in 3 places in Kerala, he said, "I spoke over the phone with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. I conveyed the concerns in detail, and he assured me that a permanent solution will be made soon. He has also invited me to Delhi for further discussions." He also clarified that Gadkari assured him that any lapses in quality, safety or implementation would not be tolerated, and accountability would be fixed. Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support for creating robust infrastructure for 'VikasitaKeralam,' he said Modi has become the standard response from the people of Kerala for every major project being executed in the state by the Modi-led government. Despite Kerala sending only one BJP MP to Parliament, Modi has been firmly supportive of the state's infrastructure development, he said. "Be it Vizhinjam Port, railways or highways, if there is any significant infrastructure development that is happening in Kerala, it is 100% because of Narendra Modi. There's no other development happening because of our state government. "We are deeply grateful that Modi has included Chirayinkeezhu and Vadakara railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Scheme and ensured their modernization," he added. UNI DS PRS

PM Modi launches Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to modernize railway infrastructure, to inaugurate stations next
'Amrit Bharat,' focuses on enhancing basic facilities and comfort levels at stations, including improved entry and exit points, waiting halls, toilets, and platforms. Stations are being upgraded with escalators, elevators, free Wi-Fi, and clearer signage read more India's railway stations, often considered bustling symbols of its towns and cities, are getting a significant makeover through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide initiative aimed at transforming passenger travel experience. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 103 railway stations across 18 states on May 22 from Bikaner, Rajasthan. This inauguration marks a major step in the long-term modernization plan designed to upgrade railway stations in phased approaches tailored specifically to each location's unique needs. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The ambitious scheme, named 'Amrit Bharat,' focuses on enhancing basic facilities and comfort levels at stations, including improved entry and exit points, waiting halls, toilets, and platforms. Stations are being upgraded with escalators, elevators, free Wi-Fi, clearer signage, and sophisticated information systems to streamline passenger movement, according to PIB. To further enrich passenger experience, select stations will include executive lounges and designated business meeting spaces. Embracing the government's 'One Station One Product' initiative, local products unique to each region will be displayed and sold, promoting regional craftsmanship and culture. These items range from indigenous handicrafts, textiles like chikankari and zari-zardozi, spices, teas, and other locally produced specialties. Central to the Amrit Bharat Scheme is the intent to integrate railway stations more effectively with the urban landscape, transforming them into vibrant hubs beyond mere transit points. Improved road access, pedestrian-friendly pathways, dedicated parking, and eco-friendly solutions like noise-free tracks are integral to this vision. Each station redevelopment reflects regional culture and architecture. Ahmedabad's redesigned station, for example, draws inspiration from Gujarat's iconic Modhera Sun Temple. In Odisha, Baleshwar station will echo the architectural grandeur of the Jagannath Temple, while Gurugram's station will embrace a modern IT theme. Accessibility remains a priority. Aligning with India's 'Sugamya Bharat Mission' (Accessible India Campaign), the Amrit Bharat Scheme ensures comprehensive accessibility features for passengers with disabilities. Facilities include entrance ramps, tactile paths for visually impaired passengers, accessible parking, low-height ticket counters, Braille signage, and lifts or ramps connecting foot over bridges. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The origin of this extensive modernization drive dates back to 2021, when Gandhinagar became India's first railway station to undergo substantial renovation, incorporating a five-star hotel and advanced facilities. Shortly afterward, Rani Kamalapati Railway Station, formerly known as Habibganj, also received significant enhancements. Officials assert that the overarching goal of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is to redefine stations as places reflecting local pride, heritage, and progress. The railway ministry views this initiative as essential to accommodate India's growing population and evolving travel expectations. Ultimately, the scheme underscores the Indian government's commitment to creating sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready public infrastructure, reflecting an ambitious vision for India's railways as more than just a means of transportation.
