Could the Nets be the preferred destination for Rutgers' Ace Bailey?

The Brooklyn Nets head into the 2025 NBA Draft with the eighth overall pick and they could be missing out on the cream of the crop in the class. However, Brooklyn may be able to take advantage of the fact that some talented player slides in almost every draft and one such players may be indicating his preferred landing spot. "One league executive believes that Bailey, once a consensus top-three pick, probably will drop in the draft because of his agency's tactics," Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported recently when talking about Rutgers forward Ace Bailey. What makes this news interesting is that Pompey also reported that the Nets are one of the teams that would be interested in trading up for Bailey if he falls. "Bailey remains the only American-based draft prospect to not visit any teams for a workout," Pompey continued. "Another league executive believes that the agency wants Bailey to remain on the East Coast and play somewhere between Atlanta and New York." With the news that Brooklyn is one of the teams that would be interested in Bailey already known, it seems that Bailey trying to remain on the east coast could be something to monitor. Pompey also wrote that "sources say the Washington Wizards (who will select sixth), New Orleans Pelicans (seventh), and Brooklyn Nets (eighth) are interested in moving up to take him." With the assumption that Bailey prefers to play on the east coast, that still means that the Wizards could have the insane track on him, especially since they have the sixth overall pick. Despite all of the reporting on Bailey in the past few days, there isn't any indication on how many teams Bailey would be okay playing for so playing for Washington is on the table. Prior to the beginning of the 2024-25 season, Bailey was perceived as being the consensus second-best player in the class until his teammate, Dylan Harper, showed more of what he could do while playing alongside Bailey. Assuming that Bailey still has the talent that once made people wonder if he was the best player in the class, Brooklyn may be able to benefit from Bailey's projected drop.

Gareth Bale linked to Plymouth Argyle takeover bid by US-based group

Behind the scenes talks are taking place between a US-based private equity group and Plymouth Argyle over a potential takeover of the Home Park club, The Telegraph has reported this afternoon. The Telegraph have also stated former Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale has been lined up to front the move, which also includes members of the American-based Storch family. Bale's former Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric became an investor and owner of another EFL club, Swansea City, in April. Advertisement A story co-written by Tom Morgan and John Percy said: "Bale has no historic connections with Plymouth and his involvement as a co-owner had been unexpected. However, US groups have increasingly looked to partner with famous faces in recent years to add glamour to club purchases beneath England's top tier. READ MORE: Wrexham sign Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie on three-year contract READ MORE: Plymouth Argyle confirm Austria training camp as part of pre-season "Modric's arrival at Swansea came after the NFL great Tom Brady became a co-owner at Birmingham City. American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas also bought shares in Leeds United prior to their return to the Premier League. Advertisement "Several sources close to talks confirm a US private equity group partnering with Bale is currently in talks over a bid for full control at Home Park." Plymouth Live has contacted Argyle this afternoon about The Telegraph's story but they have declined to comment. Argyle majority owner and chairman Simon Hallett has been seeking additional investment into the club for some time and one deal recently through. Hallett told Argyle supporters in a Chairman's Chat column on May 31: "As you know, we have been in talks with a prospective new investor in our club for over a year. Those talks led to an application for approval of that investment being lodged with the EFL in February. Advertisement "Unfortunately, negotiations have taken too long and the key information that both we and the EFL required to complete the deal has not been forthcoming. I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent. "As a result, existing shareholders (I, Argyle Green and the Holliday family) will provide the funds to ensure that we stay on course with our plans. "This means making funds available to ensure we have a competitive football budget to aim to return us to the Championship as soon as possible, as well as continued investment in Foulston Park. Our budget next season will be twice that we had the last time we were in League One. "These additional funds equate to the same level of financial support that was written into the investor plan for year one." Advertisement He continued: "I completely understand that this will be very frustrating for fans, as it is extremely frustrating for me and the rest of the Argyle board. I have said constantly that my resources can enable us to be a sustainable Championship club, but that if we wish to aspire beyond that we would need new investment. I can provide some of that new investment, with the Holliday family and Argyle Green's help, but not all. "While progress towards a transaction in its current form looks to have stalled, we will continue to explore alternative routes, including being open to revised terms with other investment groups. It is important that we get the right investor, not the quickest investor, and this may take some time. We are committed to this, but in the meantime, current shareholders can (and will) support the club through its next stage of development." Meanwhile, Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph posted on X (Twitter) later this afternoon: "An American-backed consortium -fronted by former Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale - have held talks with Plymouth Argyle over a possible takeover. It's understood discussions have taken place between the consortium & #PAFC hierarchy, but have not gone any further at this stage." Advertisement Argyle chief executive officer Andrew Parkinson is set to meet the local media later this week at the introductory Press conference for new head coach Tom Cleverley. The topic of Bale's involvement in the reported takeover bid is sure to be asked about then. You can read more of our Argyle stories from Plymouth Live by clicking HERE

Plymouth Argyle CEO responds to Gareth Bale-fronted takeover bid reports

Andrew Parkinson has described reports of a Plymouth Argyle takeover bid by a private equity group from the United States, fronted by former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, as 'speculation'. Argyle's chief executive officer was responding to stories, first published by The Telegraph on Monday, that the US group, which includes members of the American-based Storch family, were in talks about an interest in taking full control at Home Park. Advertisement Parkinson was asked about that during the introductory Press conference for new Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley at Home Park this afternoon. READ MORE: Tom Cleverley confirms Adam Randell set for Plymouth Argyle exit READ MORE: Conor Hazard expected to be fit for start of Plymouth Argyle season "That was really speculation and you would expect me to say that we are not in a position to be able to talk about any individuals or any investors, but of course when we have got the opportunity to do that we will do," said Parkinson. Argyle majority owner and chairman Simon Hallett has made no secret over the last couple of years of his desire to find additional funding for Argyle from new investors. Advertisement He confirmed in a Chairman's Chat column for the club's official club website on May 31 that one one proposed, which had been discussed for around 12 months, had fallen through. Parkinson said: "I think Simon has said this numerous times, it's about getting the right people to be involved in the club for the long term. Simon and the other shareholders as well have committed certainly for this season to do that and provide the right finances right across the board, and obviously will continue discussions for the long term. "How that looks, how that shapes, we are not going to put timetables on it but we will continue to have those discussions with potential investors." After a turbulent period at Argyle, with Cleverley becoming their fifth different head coach in 18 months and relegation from the Championship at the end of last season, Parkinson is hoping there will now be a period of stability at the club, with former player David Fox also settling into his role as head of football operations. Advertisement Parkinson said: "Obviously, we want to bounce back (to the Championship) but it's also about how we grow as a football club, how we develop, how we bring players on, how we progress. Tom has already alluded to that, this is about the long term and having the foundations to be successful not up and down. It's about long-term growth." What is Sixers prospect Ace Bailey looking for ahead of the NBA Draft?

The Philadelphia 76ers hold a lot of the cards in the 2025 NBA draft by holding the No. 3 pick. A lot of projections have Cooper Flagg going No. 1 to the Dallas Mavericks and Dylan Harper going No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs, but what is going on with the Sixers at No. 3? There doesn't seem to be a clear idea of what the Sixers are doing with their pick. They can trade down and acquire more draft assets or they can trade up and try to select a guy like Harper at No. 2. The consensus seems to be that Rutgers star Ace Bailey should go No. 3 and he did have a workout scheduled with the Sixers, but he canceled it last minute ahead of the draft so one has to wonder what he is looking for. Per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Bailey is looking for a number of things: Multiple league sources said Bailey's agent, Omar Cooper, wanted the Sixers to commit to him before his scheduled Friday workout. One league executive believes that Bailey, once a consensus top-three pick, probably will drop in the draft because of his agency's tactics. Bailey remains the only American-based draft prospect to not visit any teams for a workout. Another league executive said the agency wants Bailey to remain on the East Coast and play somewhere between Atlanta and New York. It is important to note a couple of things here. First off, the Sixers are in that East Coast category that he is looking for as Philadelphia is settled between Atlanta and New York. Another one is just because he did not work out for the Sixers doesn't mean they won't select him. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey selected Tyrese Maxey in 2020 and Jared McCain in 2024 without a workout from either player. Bailey has a lot of question marks, but there is also a lot of upside. He can do so much on the floor in terms of scoring the ball whether he is able to take players off the dribble or knock down tough shots. The ability to make tough shots has been something that is attributed to his poor shot selection, and the criticism is that he can make those shots over college players, but it's different in the NBA. Either way, if he can tap into his potential, then he figures to be a full-time star in this league. So, he may be worth the risk at No. 3 regardless.

Racing trainer that won €30m faces deportation after prison stint for doping

American-based horse trainer Jorge Navarro, known as 'Juice Man,' has been released from prison. The 50-year-old was granted early release from a federal prison in Florida after serving three years and three months of a five-year sentence for admitting to doping horses. Navarro was a key figure in a widespread 2020 doping scandal that saw more than 20 individuals charged, including Maximum Security trainer Jason Servis, who also received a prison sentence. These charges stemmed from a 2020 FBI investigation into the extensive use of performance-enhancing drugs involving a group of trainers, vets and drug distributors at racecourses across the USA and in the UAE. "I was the organiser for a criminal activity that involved five or more participants. I coordinated the administration of non-FDA approved drugs that were misbranded or adulterated to horses under my care," he told the court in 2021. "I abused a position of trust as I was a licensed horse trainer and the horses were in my custody at the time." The Department of Justice stated that Navarro, who trained over 1,200 winners with earnings close to €30million, "operated his doping scheme covertly, importing misbranded 'clenbuterol' that he both used and distributed to others, avoiding explicit discussion of PEDs during telephone calls, and working with others to coordinate the administration of PEDs at times that racing officials would not detect such cheating." One of the horses he doped was X Y Jet, winner of the valuable 2019 Golden Shaheen in Dubai. Among his preferred PEDs were various 'blood-building' drugs, which, when administered before intense physical exertion, can lead to cardiac issues or death. X Y Jet died of an apparent heart attack in 2020, reports the Mirror. Navarro won seven straight trainers' titles at Monmouth Park through 2019, but agreed to pay just under €23m in restitution four years ago, reflecting winnings tied to doping. At the time, New York district attorney Audrey Strauss described Navarro as: "A reckless fraudster whose veneer of success relied on the systematic abuse of the animals under his control." He earned the nickname 'Juice Man' following a viral video where he celebrated a winning horse trained by his brother, with a mate exclaiming "Juice Man!" and quipping: "That's the juice." Navarro was released from federal prison in Miami on Wednesday but now faces the threat of deportation, as the Panama native doesn't have US citizenship. Speaking after his release, Navarro's lawyer, Jason Kreiss, said: "Because of the fact he is not a US citizen, he is ineligible for the programs that others can take advantage of. Deportation is certainly a concern with this administration. "That's what we don't know. What is ICE is going to do with him at this point? With this administration these types of situations are very unpredictable. "In the past he would have most likely been released and if there was an immigration detainer, he'd be able to post a bond on the immigration detainer. With this administration and their denial of due process for non-US citizens we just don't know what's going to happen."
