Amazfit Active 2 smartwatch review: Loaded with features, light on price
I've always had a complicated relationship with smartwatches — especially those that come in a standard size. For years, I've found myself caught between wanting the latest features and the comfort of a wearable that doesn't feel like a burden. Most smartwatches, even the ones marketed as 'unisex' or 'compact,' have ended up feeling too large on my wrist. This frustration became especially clear when I started wearing the Amazfit Balance. While it offered a wealth of features and impressive health tracking, it always felt a bit too big and heavy—like I was wearing a miniature computer rather than an accessory. The Velcro strap, though practical, wasn't the easiest to keep clean, and after a while, I found myself longing for something lighter, sleeker, and more comfortable. You may be interested in That's when I decided to give the Amazfit Active 2 a try. Compared to its square-shaped predecessor, the watch is now round. It looked more compact and stylish from the get-go, and while these are variables worth considering, there's a lot more to a smartwatch than good looks. Keep reading to find out. The stainless steel body and glossy glass face gave it a premium, almost timeless look — like a classic watch, but with all the modern features I'd come to expect. More importantly, it felt like a feather on my wrist. Even after wearing it all day — and even to bed — it never felt like it was choking me or getting in the way. The glass is shiny and glossy, encased in a sleek stainless steel body that gives it a classic, refined look. The 1.32' AMOLED display is a real standout. In bright sunny conditions, the 1.32' AMOLED screen is actually easier to read than my iPhone 15, all thanks to its2,000 nits of I'm out for a walk with my dog or just checking notifications in direct sunlight, the screen stays crisp and vibrant, making it a pleasure to use no matter where I am. With the Amazfit Active 2, I finally feel like I've found a smartwatch that fits my wrist and my lifestyle. I have a lot of day-to-day anxiety, and the high heart rate alerts on the watch help me zone out and take deep breaths - all while observing my heart rate go down in real time. This is a standard feature on most smartwatches though, it's only a question of how well it works on which watch. And on the Active 2, it does a fairly good job - although, one must be wary of not mistaking these metrics as facts because this is not a medical device. It's best to check with your doctor if you're looking for complete accuracy. For once, the dial is the perfect size for my wrist. I've been using the Amazfit Balance before this, and while it's a great watch, it always felt a bit huge — like I was wearing a gadget rather than an accessory. The Active 2, on the other hand, sits just right — lightweight and unobtrusive, so I barely notice it's there, whether I'm running down the stairs or sleeping. The silicone strap is a real kicker for me. It's easier to clean, especially after sweaty workouts, and it stays secure without feeling tight. I appreciate that it's skin-friendly and resists moisture, which is a relief when I'm running or lifting - and I don't have to constantly keep washing the strap. Here's all you need to know about the Amazfit Active 2. One of my biggest gripes with smartwatches has always been battery life — I hate having to remember to charge yet another device every night. With the Amazfit Active 2, that's no longer a concern. I'm getting up to 6-7 days on a single charge with typical use, and even when I push it with 24x7 tracking and more. I've worn it for days on end, tracking sleep, steps, and notifications, and I've only had to recharge it once a week. It can also fully charge in under 2 hours. The only negative I've found is that I do miss the dial on the side that the Amazfit Balance had. It made navigation a bit quicker and gave the watch a more premium feel. With the Active 2, it's all touch and two buttons, which works fine, but I do feel the absence of that extra control sometimes. The maps app, while a standout feature for the price, isn't as slick as I'd hoped. You can't pinch-to-zoom or swipe to move around — street names and parks are labelled, but points of interest often aren't, and you can't just tap to navigate to a spot. To get turn-by-turn directions, you have to import a route file from another app, which feels needlessly fussy. In practice, the watch only reminded me to turn about half the time, and deviation warnings were hit or miss unless I tweaked the settings. Also, there's no way to see which apps are running or close ones you don't need, which can be frustrating if you get stuck in a menu. Swiping left to right is supposed to take you back, but I often found myself trapped in apps, relying on the physical buttons to escape. The Active 2 doesn't have Wi-Fi, so some features — like the AI voice assistant — only work with your phone nearby and the Zepp app open. It's not ideal if you want to leave your phone at home. Despite these quirks, offline maps and turn-by-turn directions are rare at this price, and the physical buttons are always responsive. For the occasional backup, it's a useful feature — just don't expect it to replace your phone for navigation. Tracking on the Active 2 is on point. The app tells me how much I've slept, the quality of my sleep, and when my stress is high. I even get notifications to do calming exercises or listen to calming music — a thoughtful touch that helps me manage stress better. Heart rate variability is also measured, and there are notifications in place to alert me if anything is too high. Of course, all of this can be tweaked from the app, so I can set it up just the way I like. The Zepp App is free and packed with features. It organises my health data neatly, so I can see trends over time and understand my progress. I like that I can review my sleep stages, stress levels, and workouts all in one place. I've come to depend on my smartwatches to see how well I'm sleeping and how much sleep I've got, so this is a really important feature for me. I found that it works as well as the Amazfit Balance, but there's no way to really verify the accuracy of sleep quality and duration analysis. But mostly, the sleeping and wake up times are in sync with my reality. Overall, the app's guidance and analysis are helpful. The Amazfit Active 2 is a smartwatch that fits my wrist and my lifestyle. It's comfortable, easy to use, and packed with features that help me stay on top of my health. The bright, glossy display and premium build make it a pleasure to wear, and the only thing I really miss is the side dial from my old watch. I test smartwatches for a living — and these are my 5 favorite models when I go hiking
You don't need to break the bank to score a solid smartwatch for tracking hikes and other outdoor adventures. Models like the $99 Amazfit Active 2 have all the basics like onboard GPS, offline maps and solid battery life. However, higher-end models like the Garmin Instinct 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 bring exceptional durability and other nifty features — including a built-in LED flashlight on the Garmin — into the equation. Want something supremely comfortable and reliable? The Garmin Forerunner 165 might be your jam. Having tested dozens of smartwatches while hiking the mountains of the U.S. Pacific Northwest, I know firsthand which models are primo trail companions and which are better left in the car. With that, here are my five favorite smartwatches for hikers in 2025. The Garmin Instinct 3 is one of my favorite smartwatches currently available. This is thanks to its rock-solid location tracking, range of useful wellness tools, support for tons of outdoor activities, and, perhaps most importantly, its long-lasting nature. The Instinct 3 comes in several varieties, including with optional solar charging capabilities. With enough time in front of the sun, the Instinct 3 Solar can, in theory, last forever without needing to visit a wall outlet or USB slot. The standard AMOLED model, meanwhile, will keep on ticking for well over two weeks. The device is also built to take on whatever the outdoors can toss at it, with 100 meters of water resistance and an oversized metal reinforced bezel to protect the screen. The Garmin Instinct 3 starts at $399 for the smaller 45mm Solar model and increases to $449 for the larger 50mm Solar edition. The 45mm AMOLED model is $449, and the larger 50mm AMOLED version is $499. The Garmin Forerunner 165 is technically a mid-entry-level running watch, but all the things that make it great for first-time marathoners also make it exceptional for hikers Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Stacked with some of Garmin's best workout training and recovery tools, not to mention impressive sleep tracking capabilities, it's also an exceptional value, easily found for under $200. For hikers, in particular, it keeps tabs on key metrics like elevation gain, pace and distance. It also has safety features, including LiveTrack and Incident Detection. Battery life when using GPS tracking should also be good for even the longest day hikes, up to 19 hours. It also comes in two lightweight, easy-wearing sizes and boasts a bright AMOLED touchscreen paired with physical buttons for when your hands are extra sweaty mid-hike. The Garmin Forerunner 165 starts at $249 but can often be found for $50 off. There's also a Music edition of the Forerunner 165, which has, you guessed it, onboard storage for tunes. That model will cost you an extra $50, but like the standard model, it often goes on sale. If you want a super-rugged smartwatch that'll take a licking and keep on ticking (okay, that's an old Timex slogan) without spending Apple Watch Ultra 2-type cash, then the Amazfit T-Rex 3 is worth a look. This oversized beast has a massive 1.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen that maxes out at an impressive 2,000 nits. This is paired with a whole bunch of physical buttons, all tucked nearly into a rather cool-looking octagonal case with a big ol' stainless steel bezel. Battery life with GPS tracking should easily get you through 36 hours or more of hiking. With 100 meters of water resistance, dual-band GPS, and even support for offline navigational maps, it's kind of amazing that the T-Rex 3 can be yours for around $250. The beastly Amazfit T-Rex 3 is priced at $279 but can easily be acquired for between $25 and $50 off. It only comes in one size, and though the nearly 49mm case won't be for everyone, the T-Rex 3 is a mighty-fine alternative to the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The Amazfit Active 2 has nearly all the same bells and whistles as the T-Rex 3, just squeezed into a more streamlined, easy-wearing case. Starting at less than $100, this admittedly handsome-looking smartwatch has onboard GPS, supports 160+ workout types, sports a bright AMOLED touchscreen and can track a hearty day's workout with plenty of battery to spare, making it one of the best bang-for-your-buck wearables in 2025. However, the most shocking feature, given the price, is support for offline navigational maps. While a little rough around the edges and somewhat limited in capability compared to, say, Apple, Garmin and Google's take, this is a tool ordinarily only found on far pricer smartwatch models. Also worth noting: Amazfit is very good about responding to user feedback with firmware updates, and even within the few months that have passed since I reviewed the Active 2, it's already seen several enhancements. The Amazfit Active 2 comes in two variants. The standard $99 model has an aluminum case and glass screen. The higher-end Active 2 premium edition ups the ante with a tougher sapphire crystal screen and stainless steel case for an extra $30. Neither Garmin nor Amazfit makes smartwatches with cellular connectivity. Fortunately, brands like Apple, Samsung and Google do. My favorite cellular-connected smartwatch is the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Similar to the best Garmin watches, the Ultra 2 is jam-packed with impressive safety features, like fall and crash detection, along with Emergency SOS. It also makes for a mighty good hiking partner thanks to a long-lasting battery — up to 35 hours when tracking a hike with GPS enabled — a tough-built design with 100 meters of water resistance, and accurate location and holistic tracking. You also get a sweet, customizable 'Action' button (plus, a side button and digital crown) along with a super-bright and immersive touchscreen. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 comes in a variety of case colors, including black (shown here), each for $799. Cellular connectivity comes standard, though you're not required to have a data plan to use the Ultra 2.

Zepp Health Corporation Reports First Quarter 2025 Unaudited Financial Results

Total gross margin stood at 37.3%, higher than both the fourth and the first quarter of 2024, even after absorbing foreign currency and tariffs headwinds. Furthermore, our total operating expense was US$32.7 million, and adjusted operating expenses[1] of US $31.5 million in the first quarter were up modestly from both the prior quarter and prior year same quarter, reflecting disciplined investments in research and development expenses, as well as targeted brand and marketing investments around product launches and new athlete sponsorships. As a result, our net loss is US$19.7 million, and our adjusted net loss[2] was US$18.1 million, as the first quarter is traditionally the lowest sales season for consumer electronics industry, which could not absorb our cost base in full. Despite this, our cash balance was US$104 million, compared to US$110 million at the fourth quarter of 2024, thanks to our enhanced working capital management and improved cash conversion cycle. Following the refinancing completed in February, long–term borrowings now represent about 70% of our total debt, and we have retired US$67.8 million of debt since early 2023, with another US$11.5 million repaid in the first quarter 2025. For the second quarter, we project revenue of US$50 million to US $55 million, representing 23% to 35% growth of revenues compared with second quarter of 2024. First Quarter 2025 Financial Results Revenues Revenues for the first quarter of 2025 reached US$38.5 million, a decrease by 3.6% from the first quarter of 2024. The decrease was primarily due to the US$5.0 million decrease in the sales of Xiaomi wearable products. In the first quarter of 2025, sales of Amazfit-branded products grew 10.2% year over year, marking a return to growth since the first quarter of 2022. This was preceded by a strong quarter over quarter growth of 43.4% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 2024. The increase was mainly driven by the successful launch of Amazfit Active 2, Bip 6, while we are still facing some supply constrains especially on the Amazfit Active 2 premium version, and it should be fully resolved in the second quarter of 2025. Compared with fourth quarter of 2024, revenue decline is driven by the seasonality while the first quarter is the lowest quarter of the year and supply constrains especially on the long lead-time components for Amazfit Bip 6 and Active 2 premium version, which resulted the Bip 6's launch was postponed to the end of March 2025. Looking at the second quarter of 2025, we are expecting the Amazfit-branded sales continue to grow, with many new products launches in the pipeline. Gross Margin Gross margin in the first quarter of 2025 was 37.3%, which was higher than first and fourth quarter of 2024, We are impacted by the additional 20% tariffs imposed on China-made products in the first quart of 2025, excluding that the gross margin is 38.4%. The higher gross margin of Amazfit-branded products was mainly driven by the higher gross margin of newly- launched products. Research and Development Expenses Research and development expenses in the first quarter of 2025 were US$12.4 million, a decrease by 7.8% year-over-year. The decrease was as a result of our refined research and development approaches, as we consistently evaluated resource efficiency to ensure maximum return on investment and productivity. We are committed to investing in new technologies and AI to maintain our competitive edge against our peers. Selling and Marketing Expenses Selling and marketing expenses in the first quarter of 2025 were US$13.8 million, an increase by 28.5% year-over-year. The increase was primarily due to US$1.7 million in digital campaigns and product launch events for new products, and US$1.4 million in sales channel investments. At the same time, we consistently pushed on retail profitability and channel mix improvement. We are committed to investing efficiently in marketing and branding to ensure our sustainable growth. General and Administrative Expenses General and administrative expenses were US$6.5 million in the first quarter of 2025, compared with US$6.4 million in the same period of 2024, an increase by 1.5% year-over-year. The increase was largely attributable to foreign exchange rate fluctuations of US$1.0, offset by a US$0.8 million decrease in share-based compensation expenses. Operating Expenses Total operating expenses for the first quarter of 2025 were US$32.7 million, an increase by 6.9% year-over-year. Adjusted operating expenses, which exclude share-based compensation and amortization of intangible assets resulting from acquisitions and business cooperation agreements, were US$31.5 million, compared with US$27.8 million in the same period of 2025. Operating Income/(Loss) Operating loss for the first quarter of 2025 was US$18.4 million, which resulted in an inability to fully cover operating expenses, compared to operating loss of US$15.9 million for the first quarter of 2024. Adjusted operating loss[3] for the first quarter of 2025 was US$17.2 million, compared to adjusted operating loss of US$13.1 million for the same period of 2024. Net Income/(Loss) Net loss attributable to Zepp Health Corporation for the first quarter of 2025 was US$19.7 million, compared to net loss of US$14.8 million in the first quarter of 2024. Adjusted net loss attributable to Zepp Health Corporation was US$18.1 million, compared to adjusted net loss of US$13.6 million in the first quarter of 2024. The first quarter is typically the season with the lowest sales, which resulted in an inability to fully cover operating expenses. Liquidity and Capital Resources As of March 31, 2025, the Company had cash and cash equivalents and restricted cash of US$103.8 million, compared with US$110.7 million of cash balance as of December 31, 2024, the result was driven by the net loss for the first quarter of 2025, offset by US$12.8 million tighter working capital management. This cash position provides ample runway for the Company to invest and seize potential market opportunities. The Company continued to manage its working capital and inventory efficiently and recorded inventory of US$64.1 million as of March 31, 2025. It went up a bit due to preparation for product launch, but the Company managed to improve big time on accounts receivable collection and accounts payable management. The Company will continue to manage working capital tightly. By February 2025, we have successfully refinanced majority of our short-term debts maturing in 2025 to a multi-year long-term debt maturing in 2027 and beyond with a lower interest rate. Starting the first quarter of 2023, we have initiated the retirement of our short/long-term debt portfolio. As of the first quarter of 2025, the Company has retired a total of US$67.8 million of debt since early 2023, with US$11.5 million repaid in the first quarter of 2025. As our operating cash flow continues to strengthen, we will continue to optimize the capital structure for the company. Shares Outstanding As of March 31, 2025, the Company had a total of 229.9 million ordinary shares outstanding, representing the equivalent of 14.4 million ADSs assuming the conversion of all ordinary shares into ADSs. Share Repurchase Program Update The Company announced in its third quarter 2021 earnings release that the board had authorized a share repurchase program of up to US$20 million through November 2022. On November 21, 2022, the board authorized a 12-month extension of the Company's share repurchase program. On November 20, 2023, the board further authorized the Company to extend its share repurchase program for another 12 months. On November 18, 2024, the board further authorized the Company to extend its share repurchase program for another 24 months. Pursuant to the extended share repurchase program, the Company may repurchase its shares in the form of ADSs and/or ordinary shares through November 2026 with an aggregate value equal to the remaining balance under the share repurchase program. As of March 31, 2025, the Company had used US$15.4 million to repurchase approximately 2.0 million ADSs.
