YEIDA nod for golf course, gymkhana near airport
Noida: Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), in its 85th board meeting on Wednesday, approved several significant infrastructure and housing projects near the upcoming Noida International Airport, utilising land marked as 'recreational greens' in the 2041 master plan. The meeting, chaired by principal secretary MSME & export promotion, infrastructure & industrial development and YEIDA chairman Alok Kumar, gave approval to a housing scheme for the economically weaker sections (EWS) and the development of a new police station and two fire stations, as well as large-scale recreational hubs and industrial planning. YEIDA CEO Arun Veer Singh said the housing plan was designed keeping in mind the influx of workers that will accompany the operation of the Noida International Airport and surrounding industrial zones. "We have decided to allot 30,000 residential plots, each measuring 30 square metres, for people in the EWS category with an annual income of less than Rs 3 lakh. This will ensure that workers have housing facilities close to their workplaces and will help curb illegal encroachment," he said. In the first phase, 4,268 plots will be launched in Sectors 17, 18, and 20. To address law enforcement needs around the upcoming airport, the board approved the development of a new police station on a 1,000 sqm plot with 60% ground coverage and a 24-metre permissible height under FAR 2.5 norms. Additionally, two fire stations will be constructed on 7,485 sqm plots each in Sectors 18 and 32. Fire department has been allotted land at a token rate of Rs 1 per sqm. YEIDA also, gave approval to the development of recreational zones in Sector 22F and Sector 23B, which will be integrated into the broader green belt of the region. Proposed facilities include a golf course, Gymkhana Club, and Yamuna Haat, along with large-scale attractions such as Kingdom of Dreams, Olympic Village, Aviation Museum, Oxford Golf Course, etc. The board granted approval for these recreational projects, directing officials to draft terms and conditions for public-private partnership (PPP) implementation.

Net zero needs green corridors, local tech, and R&D push, says top govt and industry leaders
New Delhi: India must scale up its nuclear energy capacity to 100 GW by 2047 to stay on track with its net zero targets, former power secretary Alok Kumar said at the ET India Net Zero Forum 2025. He flagged a mismatch between solar power generation and evening demand as a major challenge in aligning the country's energy transition pathway. 'India's big challenge is aligning our demand with our resources — we're headed for a solar-led future, but we generate power during the day and consume it in the evening. That's the gap we need to bridge,' said Kumar. He added that achieving 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 and 250 GW by 2070 would help India stay on track, else the country may need to fall back on carbon capture and green ammonia to run coal plants in a limited way. NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Raj Kumar Chaudhary said that while renewable energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030 is achievable, unpredictability of generation from solar and wind power poses a risk to grid stability. 'Unpredictability of energy generation via wind, solar energy is a challenge and requires ensuring grid stability as well as generation of more energy from hydrogen and biomass sources,' he said. Chaudhary added that green energy corridors are being developed to transmit solar power from high-potential zones like Ladakh to demand centres. 'The government is building green energy corridors. To enable this, 50 GW of renewable bids are planned each year till 2028,' he said. NHPC currently has 8,193 MW of green capacity in operation, 9,843 MW under construction and 9,030 MW in survey stage. The pipeline includes pumped storage projects in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states. He also highlighted India's plans to develop hydro projects in Nepal and Bhutan. Referring to concerns around environmental impact , Chaudhary said hydropower development contributes to vegetation growth. 'Hydro projects are often seen as reducing forest cover, but they actually help increase it. We undertake large-scale afforestation, often doubling the area used,' he said. UN Resident Coordinator in India Shombi Sharp said global deforestation continues at a pace of 10 million hectares a year. 'If this continues, by 2030 we'll need two Earths to meet our consumption needs,' he said. He noted that India, with one-sixth of humanity, has emerged as a key force in climate action , and is now the third-largest electricity generator globally. NABARD Chairman Shaji KV said India's rural population remains vulnerable to climate change. 'India's rural population, which consumes one-fifth of energy produced, is vulnerable to climate change which is impacting production from gross crop area,' he said. He said farm productivity in India lags 30 per cent behind the global average and that concessional finance and non-market-based solutions are required. 'We can't burden low-income farmers with the cost of net zero—solutions must be concessional, not just market-based,' Shaji said. He added that with 75 per cent of India's infrastructure yet to be built, it is critical that future development is climate-resilient. Godrej Industries Managing Director Nadir Godrej said employee involvement helped the group cut costs while meeting sustainability targets. 'We've made strong progress on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 3 is a challenge, but with supplier collaboration, we're confident of tackling that too,' he said.

Welfare officer axed over Rahul's visit to SC/ST hostel
Darbhanga: The suspension of district welfare officer (DWO) Alok Kumar following Congress MP Rahul Gandhi 's alleged unauthorised visit to the Ambedkar Kalyan Chhatravas (AKC) hostel in Darbhanga on May 15 has sparked controversy. Gandhi was scheduled to address a gathering at the local town hall, for which official permission had been granted, but instead proceeded to the hostel with a large number of party workers. Kumar's suspension was communicated on Saturday through a letter issued by Vivek Sehra, secretary of the state SC/ST welfare department. According to sources, the local Congress unit had initially sought permission on May 13 to hold Gandhi's event at the AKC hostel. DWO Kumar rejected the request and forwarded the matter to the state SC/ST welfare department. However, no directive was received in response. Subsequently, the Congress unit secured permission to hold the event at the town hall, making the necessary payment to the Darbhanga Municipal Corporation. Despite this, Gandhi, upon arrival on May 15, bypassed the approved venue and moved to the hostel instead, accompanied by a large crowd of supporters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Curiously, the dilapidated road leading to the AKC was repaired overnight in anticipation of his visit. Senior district officials were also present during the late-night roadworks. On the morning of the visit, a DSP arrived at the hostel and found himself in a difficult situation due to the large gathering. He recommended deploying additional forces, but no reinforcements were sent. Gandhi proceeded to enter the hostel, interacted with inmates and addressed the crowd of party workers. When contacted, suspended DWO Alok Kumar said, "I have been axed for no fault of mine. I rejected the request and sent the matter to the state department within 20 minutes. The district administration, without consulting me, renovated the road, which locals had been requesting for a long time but was never done."
