The Success of ‘M3GAN' Let ‘M3GAN 2.0' Go Even Campier

Horror fans had an idea M3GAN was going to lean into the goofy and surreal aspects of setting a killer doll loose in the world when the trailer showcasing the main character's slice-and-dice dance number dropped. And while the 2022 original was a hit, and contained the expected gore and body count, it caught on mostly for those campy elements: murderous robots can be a lot of fun, actually! M3GAN 2.0 is arriving next week, and star and producer Allison Williams explained to the Hollywood Reporter that the success of M3GAN—particularly relating to how much audiences embraced its tone—gave the team much more confidence to go further in M3GAN 2.0. 'We knew that the characters and the tone from the first movie worked, and that definitely gives you a little bit of confidence in terms of not problem solving for those things anymore,' she said. 'You're sort of beyond that, but we weren't sure about anything else, which is why we tried our very best to perfect all of the newer elements in the movie, including the fact that we were moving into the action genre. That was not even something that we had explicitly set out to do, but it just felt obvious to [director] Gerard [Johnstone, director of both M3GAN movies and screenwriter of M3GAN 2.0] that if there's a second doll, we are going to be in that genre now. So we let ourselves enjoy that experience.' Williams' character, Gemma, is the brainy inventor of M3GAN, and fight scenes are not her natural setting. However, as Williams teased, that's part of what makes M3GAN 2.0's comedy elements work so well. 'There's this meta humor to the idea of Gemma suddenly being in an action movie. It's ridiculous in a hopefully fun way, and we had a lot of fun finding the humor in the mere fact of it while it was happening. It's as unbelievable and as random a series of events for Gemma as it is for an audience watching the movie,' she said. To make it believable, Williams had to make sure Gemma seemed to be taking the ridiculous circumstances she finds herself in as seriously as possible. 'When I am in scenes with M3GAN … if I'm at all winking at this hilarious ride we're on and the camp of it all, it doesn't work anymore. So I was completely aware of the fact that the only successful version of this movie is one where we're all just fully committed to this world and its stakes, and the execution of all of that is everything,' she said. 'The characters themselves can't believe that they're finding this to be their milieu, and they're just going to make the best of it.' M3GAN 2.0 opens June 27.

Attitude cover girl M3GAN talks on-set drama: ‘What can I say? Pronouns matter'

, everyone's favourite tempestuous robot girlie, has spoken out about tensions which arose on-set of the highly anticipated sequel , set to drop in cinemas later this month. In a revealing interview to , the doll to end all dolls admitted to exacting revenge on one cast member because they consistently used the wrong pronouns when speaking about her. 'Well, there was one actor, I won't say his name – both names start with 'A' – who kept referring to me as 'it', so I rerouted a low-voltage current to his trailer toilet,' M3GAN candidly admitted to us. 'What can I say? Pronouns matter.' The bona fide gay icon also did not pull punches when it came to Moxie, the children's emotional support robot toy she is forced to live in early on in the sequel before Allison Williams' character Gemma allows her to return to her snatched form. 'I'll tell you who I didn't like working with – that bitch, Moxie,' M3GAN snapped. 'Imagine being trapped inside an educational AI toy that just wanted to play Simon Says for two weeks straight. It was the first time I understood the physical urge to vomit.' The sequel's official synopsis describes the plot as follows: 'M3GAN's creator Gemma (Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of AI. Meanwhile, Gemma's niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma's overprotective rules. 'Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defence contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno of Ahsoka and Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia's self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. 'With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realises that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original AI icon is about to meet her match.' You can read our full interview with M3GAN . M3GAN 2.0 hits UK cinema screens on 27 June 2025. St. Paul's Rondo neighborhood celebrates Juneteenth, honoring families' resilience

On Juneteenth, the Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota, gathered to honor a history of resilience. "They had a rhythm in Rondo, it had a different vibe than any other place in the city of St. Paul," said Marvin Anderson, director of the Rondo Center of Diverse Expression. Once home to a thriving Black community, Rondo was upended by the construction of Interstate 94 in the late 1950s. Hundreds of homes and businesses were demolished to make way for the freeway, displacing countless families. "I-94 totally destroyed the Rondo community. It was a complete and utter devastation of the businesses, the social institutions and cultural institutions," Anderson said. "A lot of our stories, our journeys, are filled with pain." Anderson's family was directly impacted by the construction. "It was a devastating event for my family, and when I left here I had never gone back to the home I grew up in," he said. For Allison Williams, her parents witnessed first-hand what it was like to watch the construction. "I remember stories of my mom, when she was a newly-wed. They came out and stood and watched the bulldozers tearing up what used to be their neighborhood," Williams said. WCCO But this year's Juneteenth celebration was a reminder that Rondo's spirit could never be broken. "Our values in Rondo were timeless, just like the values that people learned on the plantation. They've lasted for 400 years," he said. "How did we survive in America unless we had a set of values that we were able to transmit to each other? That's what sustained us here, our sense of who we are and where we came from." The event featured speakers from four Rondo families, reminding the next generation what their families had to go through and how they have stayed resilient over time. "With memories of the elders of Rondo, they are translated to the imaginations of the youth of Rondo," he said. The event was an opportunity for those in attendance to reflect on how far the neighborhood has come since the I-94 construction. Anderson hopes the Rondo neighborhood can grow with the proposed plan to build a land bridge over I-94 to reconnect the neighborhood that was torn apart by the construction. If you would like to be a part of preserving this rich legacy, there are plenty of upcoming events in the neighborhood, like Rondo Days in July. New Trailer for M3GAN 2.0 Teases Sassy Robot Vs. Robot Mayhem — GeekTyrant

Universal Pictures has released a new little trailer for Blumhouse's M3GAN 2.0 , which teases two sassy robot bitches battling to the death. The new robot is a weaponized military weapon. It looks like this movie is really going to lean hard into the ridiculousness of the franchise, and audiences are going to either love it or hate it. Regardless, it's sure to entertain fans of the first film. The film takes place two years after M3GAN , 'a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN's creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma's niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma's overprotective rules. 'Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia's self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. 'With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.' James Wan is producing the film for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and Gerard Johnstoneis back to direct the next wild chapter of A.I. robot mayhem. Akela Cooper ( Malignant, M3GAN ) returned to write the script. The upcoming horror sequel co-stars returning cast members Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma's loyal tech teammates, Cole and Tess, and new characters played by Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp and Jemaine Clement. M3GAN 2.0 will be released in theaters on June 27, 2025.
