Zverev defeats Cobolli to reach semi-finals in Halle
German tennis player Alexander Zverev celebrates after defeating Italy's Flavio Cobolli in their men's singles quarter-final match at the Terra Wortmann Open. David Inderlied/dpa Home favourite Alexander Zverev has reached the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Halle with a victory against Flavio Cobolli on Friday. Zverev prevailed 6-4, 7-8 (8-6) and will now face third seed Daniil Medvedev on Saturday. Advertisement The German had to deal with health problems right at the start of the match. He had to leave the centre court at 1-0, 40-40 and only returned after around three minutes, struggling with stomach issues. "Everything was fine before the match. Then I suddenly just didn't feel well, got off the court and threw up. I've never felt anything like that before. After that, I think I did a good match," Zverev said. After returning to the court, Zverev grabbed his stomach a few times, but played with concentration and won the first set after 47 minutes. He missed the only two break points in the second set, and the match was decided in the tie-break, in which Zverev converted his second match point after 1 hour and 40 minutes. Advertisement Zverev is making another attempt at winning a first career grass court title. He was a Halle runner-up twice and last week lost another final on the surface, against American Taylor Fritz in Stuttgart. Tennis-Zverev overcomes stomach bug to set up Halle semi-final with Medvedev
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 4, 2025 Germany's Alexander Zverev in action during his quarter final match against Serbia's Novak Djokovic REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo (Reuters) -Alexander Zverev's quest for a first grasscourt title took an unexpected turn at the Halle Open on Friday when the German second seed was forced to sprint from court to vomit mid-match before rallying to defeat Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-4 7-6(8). Second seed Zverev started the match on the front foot by breaking in the first game but as he was serving in the second, he requested a toilet break to throw up and bolted down the tunnel. Once he returned, Zverev struggled with the intensity at first and clearly looked unwell, bending over in exhaustion after points and gasping for breath after a marathon rally. "I felt fine before the match. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt really, really bad. I felt ill, went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt OK again," Zverev said. "I don't know what it was, I've never experienced that before. I hope I'll be fine in the next couple of hours when the adrenaline settles. After that I think it was a pretty good match." Although nowhere near 100%, Zverev held serve as he slowly drew on his reserves of energy, firing his first ace of the match on set point. The second set was an even contest as Cobolli relied on his movement to continue troubling Zverev, but the German eventually triumphed in a close tiebreak, finishing the match with 22 winners and 12 points at the net. The semi-final pits Zverev against Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, a familiar foe who holds a 12-7 head-to-head advantage and has won their last three meetings. "I think he's the guy that I played the most in my career. I'm looking forward to it," Zverev added. "A lot of things happened in the last 18 months. He's one of my toughest opponents in my career. It's going to be a great match and I'm really looking forward to facing him." Medvedev moved into the semi-finals with a 6-4 6-3 victory over American Alex Michelsen despite suffering a nosebleed in the second set which forced the 2021 Halle runner-up to take a medical timeout. However, the Russian served well to deny his opponent a single break point opportunity and wrapped up the contest in 85 minutes as he reached the last four without dropping a set, with the only thing causing problems being the shadows on the court. "The shadows on the court made the conditions quite difficult. It took some time to get used to it. It was then better in the second set," said Medvedev, who will return to the top 10 ahead of Wimbledon. (Reporting by Rohith Nair in Bengaluru;)

Zverev makes winning start in Halle after first aid effort
DPA Halle (Germany) Alexander Zverev breezed into the second round of the Halle Open on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-1 over American Marcos Giron, and also found time to help an injured spectator. Second seed Zverev brought a bag of ice to a woman to ccol her neck where she was hit by a part of an advertising board that had fallen from an upper tier. The 62-year-old woman was tended to by paramedics and taken to hospital for observation, but she appeared largely unhurt. 'This has never happened in the 32-year history of the tournament. We deeply regret the incident,' tournament director Ralf Weber said, promising the women a free ticket for the whole tournament next year as a small compensation. The match which was in the first set soon resumed, and Zverev won in 1 hour 19 minutes, with the help of 10 aces and 22 winners. He did not face a break point while breaking 43rd-ranked Giron four times. 'I hope the lady is OK. Something like that should of course not happen,' Zverev said post-match. 'Of course I am happy with the way I played. But the most important thing is that everyone here goes home healthy and happy.'

No. 1 Jannik Sinner loses to Alexander Bublik in second round at Halle
HALLE, Germany (AP) — Top-ranked Jannik Sinner was upended by Alexander Bublik 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at the Halle grass-court tournament Thursday. Sinner, the Halle defending champion, was playing in his first tournament since losing a five-set thriller to Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland-Garros final. The three-time Grand Slam champion had beaten Yannick Hanfmann in the first round this week, but the big-serving Bublik gained some revenge after having lost to Sinner in the quarterfinals in Paris. 'It's a special one — I had never beaten the top one (No. 1) in the world, that's an accomplishment,' Bublik, who is ranked 45th, said in his on-court interview. The Kazakhstan player recorded 36 winners and 15 aces against the top-seeded Sinner in the Wimbledon warmup tournament. 'I just kept serving, kept putting him in uncomfortable positions and it worked well,' said Bublik, the 2023 Halle champion who will face Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals. Also Thursday, the second-seeded Alexander Zverev outlasted Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to reach the quarterfinals. ___ More AP tennis:
