New eyes in the skies: What to know about new DPS assets in the San Angelo area

San Angelo residents might notice more activity in the skies with the Texas Department of Public Safety's addition of its Aircraft Operations Division to the area, according to a DPS media release. DPS officials said the expansion is a big step in enhancing public safety and operational capabilities across a broad region stretching from Del Rio to Lubbock. The San Angelo unit is operating both a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft, providing vital air support across this large geographic area, officials said in the media release. "We are excited to bring this valuable service to the San Angelo area," DPS officials said. "While residents may notice increased aerial activity, rest assured — it's a friendly eye in the sky, dedicated to keeping our communities safe." DPS officials said the AOD plays a crucial role in statewide air patrols, criminal surveillance, and search and rescue missions. In addition, the division strengthens public safety while supporting all DPS divisions and county, state, and federal agencies, DPS officials said. With advanced technology, air patrol units assist in apprehending fugitives, locating suspects, deterring criminal activity and reinforcing border security. "Additionally, the division enhances search and rescue operations by partnering with local, state, and federal first responders to locate and recover individuals during disaster-related incidents," DPS official said in the media release.
