Gerik bus crash survivor haunted by trauma
BESUT: The emotional toll from the Gerik bus crash weighs heavily on Nur Ain Najwa Mohd Ilias, 23, who survived the incident that killed 15 of her university mates on June 9. "I don't have the strength to look at news about the incident on social media," said the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student. She suffered a fractured left shoulder in the crash and is traumatised by the sight and sound of buses. The Arabic with Education student said she now only uses WhatsApp to communicate with family, friends and her lecturers at UPSI. "Whenever I hear the sound of a bus, I get anxious and try to calm myself by reciting istighfar," she said at her home in Kampung Gong Kemuntong. Nur Ain Najwa said she was semi-conscious at the time of the incident as she had fallen asleep after taking medication for a fever. "I regained consciousness only after the bus had overturned. "It was eerily silent, and my left shoulder was in excruciating pain. In my heart I said, 'Ya Allah, if You want to take my life, I am ready,' before losing consciousness again. "The next time I woke up, I was outside the bus, waiting for help." She said she had used part of her headscarf to support her injured arm before a passer-by gave her a piece of cloth. Her mother, Nani Hamid, 49, said Ain hadn't planned to take the bus that night, but decided to return to campus early and bought a ticket from another student. She added that Ain had initially planned to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha at her sister's home in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, but in the end both siblings decided to return to their family home in Kampung Gong Kemuntong.

[Watch] Beachgoer Calls Out Rental Touts For Taking Over Teluk Senangin Public Beach
Subscribe to our FREE Beach-goers at Teluk Senangin, Perak are starting to speak up against the loss of seaside views at the public beaches. The problem isn't due to overdevelopment but due to the number of rental beach chairs covering every inch of sand. TikTok user Ain shared her family was about to set out their mats when a man, a rental tout, approached them to tell them off. He claimed the area was under his purview and Ain's family would have to pay the rental fees if they want to use the space. The family decided to rent the tables which cost RM10 each and tried to rearrange the furniture. However, the man returned and told them the chairs, tables, and floats cannot be moved. Ain explained her family wanted to move the plastic furniture so they could enjoy the sea views while keeping an eye on the children playing in the water. As shown in the video, the group of rental chairs and tables obstructed the line of sight and an eyesore. It's said that these rental furniture used to be arranged at the back instead of occupying the whole beach stretch. Additionally, the family next to them claimed they had to pay almost RM100 to rent the whole space under the tree. Ain said she posted the video not to shame the man or take down his business but to call out the business practice that has gone overboard. Many in the comments shared her views and misgivings about the matter. Some claimed these rental touts were rude to beachgoers who didn't know the chairs and tables weren't for public use. They hoped the authorities would look into the issue because they felt it has spoiled other people's beach trips. Meanwhile, a user advised everyone to head to Teluk Batik instead for cleaner beaches and enjoy better swims although some said they still preferred Teluk Senangin for its shady trees. EU-funded project to monitor Iraq's parliamentary elections
Shafaq News/ On Thursday, three Iraqi civil society organizations—Ain, Shams, and Tamouz— launched a European Union-funded national project aimed at monitoring the country's upcoming parliamentary elections, strengthening electoral transparency, and encouraging civic participation. Speaking with Shafaq News, the project director, Salah Areibi, noted that the initiative will cover all 19 provinces, with a core focus on deploying field teams, overseeing electoral procedures, and carrying out awareness campaigns. These teams will also provide training workshops designed for a broad range of social groups, particularly young people, fostering a more inclusive engagement in the voting process. Mohammed al-Jubouri, one of the project participants, described the initiative as a meaningful step toward enabling citizens to play a more active role in shaping Iraq's political landscape. He also emphasized to Shafaq News that the project goes beyond Election Day monitoring, extending to result announcements and any developments that could affect the fairness of the process. Moreover, Loay al-Kakayi, head of the Independent High Electoral Commission's (IHEC) office in Kirkuk, confirmed the commission's support for the initiative, noting that all required facilitation will be made available to ensure that the monitoring teams can carry out their duties effectively. Notably, Iraq is scheduled to hold its legislative elections on November 11. Nearly 29 million Iraqis are eligible to vote, with 338 political coalitions registered to date. Of these, 106 have expressed interest in participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
