3 cold storage units to be built for Haveri farmers: Minister

Haveri: Shivanand Patil, the Haveri district in-charge minister responsible for textiles, sugarcane development, sugar, and agricultural markets, declared plans for constructing cold storage facilities worth Rs 30 crore to benefit farmers of the district in preserving their produce and obtaining improved market rates. On Sunday, during the Bhoomi puja ceremony for three new cold storage facilities at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) premises in Hulihalli-Koonabevu village, Ranebennur taluk, he highlighted the cold storage shortage affecting APMC farmers and traders. The RIDF-30 scheme will enable the establishment of three modern cold storage units, providing district-wide storage options for agricultural produce. "The Hulihalli APMC market, built in 2023 with an investment of Rs 220 crore, showcases the aspirations of veteran leaders, including former minister KB Kolivada and Byadagi MLA Basavaraj Shivannanavar. Although current usage remains low, 153 shops have been allocated but are yet to begin operations. Upon opening, it will emerge as a state-of-the-art market. The Ranebennur market is positioned to become central Karnataka's largest, after Hubballi and Mysore markets," he stated.

3 arrested, 2 minors detained for raping 15-year-old repeatedly

Three people were arrested and two minors detained for allegedly gang raping a 15-year-old girl multiple times over five months in Belagavi taluk, police said. According to Belagavi police commissioner Gulabrao Borase, the ordeal began when one of the accused, known to the survivor, lured her to a forested year under the Kakati police limits in January and raped her. 'The assault was filmed and circulated among his friends, who then used the footage to blackmail and force her to repeatedly come to the spot. Two of his friends reportedly raped the girl after obtaining the video. Eventually, three more people — also armed with the recordings — joined in the act. This continued till May.' The accused allegedly used to warn her that they would kill her family or leak the videos online if she resisted or told anyone, he added. 'Fearing for her family's safety and her own dignity, the girl, belonging to a daily-wage labourer's family, remained silent and continued to meet the accused whenever they summoned her. The matter came to light only after she confided in her parents, and a case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) police station on May 31,' the officer said. He further said that the two minor accused were remanded to a juvenile home, while the three adults were sent to Hindalga Central Prison. 'Efforts are underway to apprehend the sixth accused, who remains at large. (WHEN WERE THEY PRESENTED BEFORE COURT)

Karnataka: Five, including two minors, arrested for raping 15-year-old twice in 2 months

The Belagavi Police in Karnataka have arrested five individuals, including two minors, for allegedly gang-raping a 15-year-old girl and filming the act, and then raping her again within a span of two months, The News Minute reported on Sunday. Belagavi Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase on Sunday said that a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act had been registered at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee police station the previous day against six persons. Among them, two are minors. Within 24 hours of the case being filed, five people have been arrested while the police are on the lookout for the sixth person, India Today reported. The offences, which allegedly occurred between December and January, came to light only recently when the complainant's parents approached the police. According to the complaint, the minor was first taken by her friend – one of the perpetrators – in a car to Windmill Hill in Muttyanatti village in December. After gaining her trust, he allegedly lured her to the spot, where he and five others raped her and filmed the act. The videos were then used to blackmail her, resulting in a second case of sexual assault in January. In the second instance, the man took the complainant to Khadi Machine Hill near Alatage, where three others allegedly raped her again, The New Indian Express reported. 'She was gang raped several times in different places. We will try to ensure the strictest punishment for the accused,' the police commissioner said.
