KP presents Rs192.7bn supplementary budget
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government here Friday presented a supplementary budget of over Rs192.74billion for the current fiscal year. According to the budget documents, the largest expenditure, Rs150 billion, was made under government investment. Similarly, the documents said a sum of Rs10.86 billion was allocated to the Department of Social Welfare and Special Education, a huge chunk of Rs2.5 billion was paid to the federal government for repayment of foreign loan principals, and Rs. 3.10 billion for advance loan payments. Provincial Finance and Law Minister Aftab Alam presented the supplementary budget in the provincial assembly. He said the Department of Administration received a total of Rs. 545.5 million in additional funds for employee salaries, utility allowance, executive allowance, house rent, POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants), electricity bills, and vehicle purchases. The Department of Planning and Development received Rs. 61 million, Home Department got Rs. 260 million, and Prison Department was allocated Rs. 1.58 billion for prisoner food expenses. According to the budget documents, the Judiciary received a total of Rs. 2.73 billion, Higher Education Department got Rs. 1.93 billion, Communications Department Rs. 1.60 billion, Public Health Rs. 1.09 billion and the Local Government Department was given Rs. 2.87 billion in additional funds. Furthermore, an extra Rs. 590 million was paid as subsidy for inter-provincial wheat transportation. During the current fiscal year, the provincial government has released Rs. 2.5 billion to the federal government for foreign loan principal repayments and Rs3 billion for loan and advance payments, the Minister added. PISQ students shine in video making competition at Blyth Academy

K-P to unveil FY25-26 budget on June 13
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government will table the FY 2025-26 budget on June 13. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur greenlighted the summary sent by the finance ministry and approved the date for budget presentation. Instead of finance advisor Muzamil Aslam, Minister for Law Aftab Alam will unveil the budget as Aslam is not a member of the house. Alam had also presented the budget for the current financial year. Sources said the total outlay of the K-P budget for the next fiscal year is likely to be pegged at Rs2,000 billion. Around Rs450 to Rs500 billion are likely to be earmarked for development projects. It is pertinent to mention that the total volume of the current fiscal year was fixed at Rs1751 billion, with Rs420 billion set aside for ADP. The K-P government is preparing for a Rs180 billion surplus budget for the next fiscal. Interestingly, the K-P government had broken the parliamentary tradition last year and presented a surplus budget for FY 2024-25 in the provincial assembly, even before the announcement of the federal budget, a move unprecedented in the country's history. Finance Minister Aftab Alam unveiled the Rs1,754 billion budget for fiscal 2024-25 [July-June], boasting a surplus of Rs100 billion.

K-P to send child marriage bill to CII
The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is set to send the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2019 to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for review. It was stated by K-P Minister for Law Aftab Alam advocate during a meeting of the Provincial Standing Committee regarding the draft of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2019 on Tuesday. Provincial Minister for Social Welfare and Women Development Syed Qasim Ali Shah, Advocate General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shah Faisal Atman Khail, and other relevant officials were also present. During the meeting, the department's officers briefed the participants in detail about the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2019. Committee members provided their suggestions and feedback on the bill. Provincial Minister for Law Aftab Alam Advocate said it is a sensitive issue closely related to religious and Islamic teachings; therefore, the bill should be sent to the Council of Islamic Ideology for further review and progress. Kundi pledges support to young scientists Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi met students participating in the prestigious International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition and pledged his support. The meeting highlighted the team's efforts in addressing critical environmental issues such as climate change and drought through innovative applications of synthetic biology, including engineered plants and microbes. Governor Faisal Karim Kundi commended the students for their dedication to scientific research and innovation, recognizing their work as a significant contribution to Pakistan's presence in the global scientific community. He congratulated the team on their achievements and assured them of the government's support in their journey to represent Pakistan on the international stage. "This is a moment of pride for Pakistan, as after six years, our country is once again participating in this prestigious global competition. I fully support these young scientists and innovators who are striving to find solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges. The government will provide all possible assistance to ensure that our talented youth can showcase their abilities on a global platform," said Governor Kundi. The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition is the world's largest synthetic biology event, originally founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2003. iGEM brings together over 400 teams from 50 countries each year to design and develop engineered biological systems that address real-world problems. The competition fosters innovation and collaboration, providing young scientists an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology.
