Billy Bob Thornton shocks Kathy Bates by revealing that he nearly starred in 'Misery 'with her: 'You did not!'

Billy Bob Thornton and Kathy Bates almost crossed paths earlier in their careers — but it wasn't meant to be. "There was a time I went in and read for [director] Rob Reiner for Misery," Thornton revealed when the stars sat down to catch up for Variety's Actors on Actors series. The Matlock actress, who played the female lead in Misery and scored an Oscar for her performance, was stunned, replying, "You did not!" "I swear to God," Thornton confirmed. Thornton's revelation comes after three decades of knowing Bates. They first shared the screen in 1998's Primary Colors, the Mike Nichols dramedy about a presidential campaign. Eighteen years later, they would reunite for Bad Santa 2. But according to Thornton, they could have starred together in a movie as early as 1990. "Originally, Richard Farnsworth, who played the sheriff [in Misery], had a deputy," he explained. "I saw Rob Reiner for it. And Rob said right in the room, 'You're the guy. We can send everybody else home.' I was very excited." Unfortunately, creative choices led to his character getting cut from the script before filming even began. "I got a call from Rob Reiner — not many directors would do this — he called me and he said, 'Listen, I've been looking at the script and been planning out what I'm going to do with this movie,'" Thornton recalled. "He said, 'You can come up here and shoot this for the money or the insurance or whatever you need, but I'm just telling you it's not going to be in the movie.'" The Landman star continued, "He said, 'I don't want you to come up here expecting that this is going to be in the movie. And I didn't want you to be disappointed.'" In the end, Thornton declined to join the shoot, but he was grateful for Reiner's handling of the situation. "I thought that was very cool of him," he said. Bates agreed, "Yeah, very cool." Based on the Stephen King horror novel of the same name, Misery stars Bates as Annie Wilkes, the "number-one fan" of romance author Paul Sheldon (James Caan), who saves him after a car wreck, only to jail him in her home and torture him. The film marked a career-defining moment for Bates, who earned the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role. Though Thornton didn't get to bask in the glory of Misery, he achieved his own Oscar success within the same decade, racking up international acclaim for writing, directing, and starring in 1996's Sling Blade. He not only won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay, but also got a nod for Best Actor. He would be nominated again just two years later for his supporting role in A Simple stars had accolades and big careers ahead of them when they came together for Primary Colors. And though their characters never come together in the movie, Bates has only fond memories of starring alongside Thornton. "There was one day, we were in the house, and we were waiting, and you and I were lying on the floor. I remember that," she said. "You were this way, and I was that way, and our heads were [together], and we were just talking." "I remember," Thornton replied with a smile. "I don't know what we were talking about," said Bates, "but that was fun." Watch Thornton and Bates reunite and reminisce in the video above. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Arnold Schwarzenegger says women are giving him their numbers — but they're not interested in him

Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't mind being outshone by his " White Lotus" star son, Patrick Schwarzenegger. In a wide-ranging interview with The Times published on Saturday, the " Terminator" actor spoke about his journey through Hollywood, politics, and fatherhood. Schwarzenegger has five children, four of whom he shares with his ex-wife, Maria Shriver, a journalist and niece of former US President John F. Kennedy. Their eldest son, Patrick, has followed his father into acting. Reflecting on his son's breakout role in the widely popular HBO series, Schwarzenegger said he now finds himself proudly living in his son's shadow. "Patrick never asked me a question about acting. But he came many times to me and said, 'I just did an interview with this magazine and two-thirds of the questions were about you.' But I was just in New York and a journalist comes up and says, 'What's it like being the father of Patrick Schwarzenegger?'" Schwarzenegger told The Times. Instead of being the center of attention, Schwarzenegger said people now approach him to talk about his son. "I walk into the gym now and it used to be the girls would come up and give me their contact. And then after 'White Lotus' comes out, the girl comes up and says, 'Here's my contact, give it to Patrick,'" he said. The former governor of California added that it's "wonderful" to see his son's success. "If I go to my grave and know that my son has outdone me, I'm in heaven," Schwarzenegger said. But having famous parents in Hollywood isn't always a good thing. In February, the younger Schwarzenegger said that he sometimes wishes he had a different last name so that he doesn't get called a nepo baby. "Of course, it's frustrating and you can get boxed in and you think at that moment, I wish I didn't have my last name. But that's a small moment. I would never trade my life with anyone," he said. In April, the " White Lotus" producer, David Bernad, revealed that the showrunners almost didn't cast Patrick Schwarzenegger because of his last name. In early June, the father-son duo appeared on Variety's " Actors on Actors," where the younger Schwarzenegger said he once considered using an alias but ultimately decided against it. "I'm glad you kept the name, because now I can take credit," the elder Schwarzenegger said. "You joined a very short list of people: You know, Jamie Lee Curtis — I think she's one of the greatest actors in history. If you show you have the substance, you can get rid of the whole idea of nepotism." A representative for Schwarzenegger did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.

Cooper Koch reveals two failed auditions to play Menendez brother—here's who beat him

Stephane Cardinale/Corbis via Getty Images Cooper Koch Cooper Koch is nothing if not tenacious! The 28-year-old actor broke out in 2024 for starring in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as Erik Menendez. His impassioned performance led to a Golden Globe nomination, a spot in Variety's Actors on Actors interviews, and millions of fans. In his Actors on Actors interview — a web series hosted by Variety — Koch was paired up with The White Lotus star Sam Nivola. The two discussed playing characters defined by their relationships to their brothers, working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and how they got their breakout roles. Fans already knew that Koch was passionate about the Menendez brothers, speaking out about their real-life case and even visiting them in prison. Now, we know how deep that passion goes. Cooper Koch and Sam Nivola haven't met before, but form an instant bond in the Actors on Actors studio. They discuss what it ... - YouTube During his appearance on Variety's "Actors on Actors," Koch revealed that he had actually — literally — auditioned for the 2017 limited season dubbed Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders that centered on the Menendez brothers (Koch's second audition ever). And Koch had also auditioned for the 2017 Lifetime movie Menendez: Blood Brothers, once again not booking the role. "I just felt like this insane cosmic, universe-y thing that was like, 'I have to play this part,'" Koch told Nivola in their one-on-one interview. "It was just that immense empathy that you feel for a person, and I had to do it." Koch eventually earned his chance to play one of the Menendez brothers on Ryan Murphy's Monsters series on Netflix. The series was so successful that it propelled Koch to become a household name around the world, and a legitimate Emmy contender, too. However, Koch's revelation did some spark a curiosity within us: Who the heck were the other actors who beat him in those auditions for the Lifetime movie and the limited season of Law & Order? Nico Tortorella starred as Lyle Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers when he was 29 years old. The Shield star Benito Martinez played the Menendez patriarch José, and musician Courtney Love played the mother, Kitty Menendez. Tortorella was already a rising star at the time, having played Trevor Sheldon in Scream 4, and starred in the TV shows The Beautiful Life, Make It or Break It, The Following, and Younger. After those shows, Tortorella has often appeared as himself, including on RuPaul's Drag Race and Legendary as a guest judge, and RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race as a competitor. Over the years, Tortorella came out as bisexual, genderfluid, and polyamorous. The actor also got married to Bethany C. Meyers in 2018, and they have two kids together. Before playing Erik Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers, Myko Olivier had many small roles in television and short films, including the MTV series Awkward, Zendaya's Disney series K.C. Undercover, Nickelodeon's Sam & Cat with Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande. He also starred in Glee as one of the Warblers. Since then, Olivier has continued to steadily work on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Code Black, Doctor Odyssey, and Good Trouble, where he played Tyler Banks for nine episodes. Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders aired in 2017 and starred Edie Falco as defense attorney Leslie Abramson. Actor Gus Halper played Erik Menendez in the series. Before Law & Order, he had landed roles in TV shows such as Power and Chicago P.D. Halper's career took off after this performance on Law & Order, and he was soon starring in shows like Happy!, Madam Secretary, Ramy, Dickinson, Evil, Fear the Walking Dead, and Law & Order: Organized Crime. In 2023, he appeared in the Oscar-nominated film Rustin as civil rights activist Tom Kahn alongside Colman Domingo (who played the title character). On Law & Order, Lyle Menendez was played by actor Miles Gaston Villanueva. Villanueva made his name in Hollywood starring in 87 episodes of The Young and the Restless, while also appearing in shows like NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Bones, and Jane the Virgin. Villanueva has continued his successful TV career, starring in eight episodes of The Resident, seven episodes of Nancy Drew, and seven episodes of Bosch: Legacy. He also appeared on the gritty superhero show The Boys as Supersonic, where he played a hero with sound-based powers. Supersonic was formerly a member of an all-super boy band called Super-Sweet — and he even dated Starlight.

Amanda Seyfried: Paramount owes me for Mean Girls merch

Amanda Seyfried believes Paramount owe her money for Mean Girls merchandise. The 39-year-old actress - who played Karen Smith in the 2004 movie - loves the enduring popularity of the teen comedy but admitted she feels "a little resentful" because her fact appears on so many T-shirts and she doesn't get any royalties for the use of her likeness. Asked if she has rewatched the film, she told Adam Brody for Variety's Actors on Actors series: "No. It's on often enough though. I love it. I really love seeing my face on people's T-shirts. "I'm a little resentful because Paramount still owes me some money for the likeness. Every store sells Mean Girls T-shirts with our faces. Amanda questioned if she missed out on extra revenue because she was young and "dumb" when she signed her contract for the film. She said: "Don't I [get something from that]? Is it because I was 17 and dumb? Or is it..?' " But Amanda is always grateful when she meets fans of the film. She said: "Even the girl at TSA tells me it's her favourite movie. I'm like, 'Great! I had nothing to do with it, I was 17...'" Meanwhile, the Mamma Mia star - who has two children with husband Thomas Sadoski - thinks she is "allergic" to marijuana, though she had some enjoyable times consuming the drug with Adam. Reminiscing about visiting a beach when they filmed 'Jennifer's Body', she said: "I don't know if I could do pot again. I think I'm allergic to it. I had some bad experiences. "But I remember that being the most peaceful. That was probably the last time. I might have also gotten stoned with you at your house that I now own. "I think the only time I've enjoyed pot was with you, so thank you. You have an effect on people. Look at what's happening: You're in a hit show, and people are gasping, 'Adam Brody'." The Nobody Wants This star quipped: "I don't think it's pot-related." Amanda agreed: "No, it's just that you make people feel at ease." Adam said: "I really appreciate that, I think because I'm pretty attuned to people's discomfort because I'm in touch with my own, so I don't think I'm a bad host in that way."
