Jacksonville Sharks hope to avenge early season loss against Quad City Steamwheelers
The Jacksonville Sharks will face the Quad City Steamwheelers this Saturday at the arena in the Shark Tank on Star Wars Night. The 7 p.m. kickoff features two of the best teams in the Indoor Football League and could go a long way in deciding the upcoming playoff race, Advertisement Quad City is currently atop the Eastern Division at 9-2 and has one of the toughest defenses in the league, allowing just 36.9 points per game. Jacksonville isn't far behind at 7-4, while giving up 38.5 points per game and ranking fifth in points allowed. Jacksonville gets a chance to avenge an early season loss on the road when they lost to Quad City 62-41. For an in-depth preview of the Saturday's game, watch this week's edition of Shark Bites. What does Dennis Gardeck offer the Jaguars?
The Jaguars went from desperately needing a rotational edge rusher for years to having a surplus after the team signed both Emmanuel Ogbah and Dennis Gardeck. Gardeck, 30, has spent his entire career serving as the Cardinals' rotational piece. Now, after seven years in Arizona, Gardeck looks to join a talented group in Jacksonville. In his seven years, Gardeck has tallied 17.0 career sacks, 23 TFLs, and 156 combined tackles. Advertisement While Gardeck may not be piling on the sack numbers, there's a reason Arizona kept him around for so long. Of his 17 sacks, 13 of them came in just two seasons, seven in 2020 and six in 2023. He did, however, rack up 42 pressures in 2023. His 42 pressures led the team, despite not being listed as a full-time starter. Gardeck's 17.9% pass-rush win rate ranked 13th among 98 qualifying edge rushers. Dennis Gardeck is solid outside of rushing the passer as well. In spite of not seeing full-time snaps, Gardeck's 27 defensive stops tied Travon Walker in 2023, according to ProFootballFocus. Advertisement Liam Coen spoke highly of Gardeck after the signing. He got to see Gardeck's impact firsthand during his time with the Rams. 'Yeah, just a ton of respect for the player competing against him two times a year in L.A. since 2018,' Coen said. 'Every time we would go play the Arizona Cardinals, he was on the game-wrecker board.' Coen continued, 'We would always kind of introduce the game wreckers to the players. And he was on there, whether it was originally for special teams, and then also for rushing the passer and creating some disruption. It just gives us somebody a little bit different kind of style rusher, special teams demon.' Not only do the Jaguars finally have that much-needed third edge-rusher to spare Josh Hines-Allen and Walker, they have a fourth now as well. Gardeck might not rack up double-digit sacks, but he allows the Jaguars to keep their two starters fresh without feeling pressured to keep them on the field. Advertisement It's icing on the cake that Gardeck is a special-teams ace as well. It's clear Jaguars' GM James Gladstone is never satisfied with the status quo and is always on the lookout for how he can make this Jaguars roster better. Hunter grew up in South Florida, where his father played football and starred on the track and field team at Boynton Beach Community High School. Can Caleb Ransaw make the transition to Safety?
The Jacksonville Jaguars have invested a ton of assets into their secondary. From Tyson Campbell's extension, selection of Travis Hunter, signing of Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray, the Jaguars have made it known through their actions that the secondary needed some work, a lot of work. Advertisement The Jags' secondary ranked last in nearly every statistical category so the viewpoint is certainly warranted. >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<< Rookie nickel Jarrian Jones was about the unit's only saving grace as Tyson Campbell and company struggled in the man-heavy scheme under Ryan Nielsen. In the draft, James Gladstone traded up to select the unicorn himself, Travis Hunter, who figures to play both ways in Jacksonville. However, it was their third round selection of Caleb Ransaw that puzzled many initially but the vision was there. Ransaw, largely a nickel cornerback at Tulane, plays with physicality and toughness. He led all FBS cornerbacks in 2023 with a missed tackle rate of just 1.8%. His career missed tackle rate of 5.4% is top tier for any cornerback. Advertisement It's for these reasons and his skills in zone coverage that have the Jaguars intrigued with Ransaw at the safety position. The Jaguars cornerback room is pretty full with Campbell, Jones, Lewis, Hunter, and Montaric Brown, however, there is a path for Ransaw to become one of the Jaguars' starting safeties in the future. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] On top of his physicality and tackling prowess, Ransaw is an incredible athlete, posting a 9.75 RAS. His 4.33 40-yard dash is among the fastest ever if graded out as a safety. In fact, he would be the second fastest safety ever. Ransaw is pretty dang good in coverage too. Advertisement Last season, Ransaw allowed just a 43.5% completion rate, his best season in coverage. Much of his time in college came at nickel, 766 snaps to be exact. It's generally a much easier transition to safety than say outside cornerback. While he's been solid overall in coverage, I mentioned his skills in zone. Last season, Ransaw allowed just three receptions on nine targets for 45 yards. It wasn't as though he didn't see a lot of play in zone, Ransaw was just rarely targeted. The Jaguars have flexibility needed to develop and mold Ransaw into the player that they envision. He doesn't need to start or even play right away as there are other players who can fill in the short term. Advertisement The hope is, with Ransaw's physicality, athleticism, and coverage skills, that he can develop into a starting safety for the Jaguars down the line and eventually replace or complement Eric Murray. Jaguars fans will have to be patient with Ransaw but the reward might just be worth all the risk.
