Communities gather to celebrate Neighbour Day despite rainy weather

Heavy rainfall put a damper on many of Calgary's city-wide Neighbour Day festivities, but some communities, like the Acadia Community Association, made the best of it.

The community was able to move its usual block party indoors, with bouncy castles, karaoke, face paint and cotton candy set up inside the McDougall United Church.

Those who did attend, however, made the best of the small crowd. Onlookers cheered on Badau and her fellow board member, Shanon Crews, as they got on stage to sing karaoke.

Badau said there had also been venue complications earlier in the planning process, with the McDougall church stepping in at the last minute to offer their parking lot.

'That would have been fun,' Badau said, 'but instead, luckily, they have a wonderful indoor venue.'

Mayor Jyoti Gondek braved the bad weather to make an appearance at Acadia's event, as well as several others throughout the city.

'The day has been a lot of fun so far,' Gondek said. 'Despite the rain, people are coming out, they're having a good time, lots of kids. It's really nice to see.'
