Garbage not being taken from homes, dumped on roads

1 2 3 4 Lucknow: Irregular door-to-door garbage collection across several localities has led to open dumping and waste accumulation in public spaces, raising serious sanitation concerns in the state capital. A TOI reality check on Sunday across Gomtinagar, Mahanagar, Alambagh, Maulviganj, and Sitapur Road revealed that waste remained uncollected in many areas. However, Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) officials said the disruption in some areas may have been due to sanitation workers being on leave during Bakrid. In Mahanagar, residents said garbage had not been collected for two consecutive days. "Since the waste wasn't collected from doorsteps, people dumped it in the open, where it was later scattered by stray animals," said Rajesh Yadav, 53. In Alambagh, concerns were heightened due to the onset of the rainy season. "With the rains approaching, scattered garbage poses a health risk. The collection service has been inconsistent in our area," said Abhijeet Kumar, 43. In Chandarnagar, garbage was seen dumped along roads and near shops. "There's a strong stench in the area due to open dumping," said Neetu, a commuter from Alambagh. Vendors in the area shared similar concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of Gutter Protection For 2,500 Sq Ft House LeafFilter Gutter Protection Get Quote Undo "Garbage is regularly dumped here, creating an unpleasant environment. Still, we have to keep working—this is our livelihood," said Mohan Singh, a roadside stall owner. In some parts of Alambagh, despite regular visits by municipal vans, residents were seen discarding waste outside their homes. "The van comes routinely, but many avoid handing over waste and instead dump it outside. This habit is harming the area's cleanliness," said Preeti, a resident of the area. Similar complaints emerged from Gomtinagar as well. Shivendra Singh, a resident of Vishesh Khand, said, "Garbage outside our home hasn't been picked up for three days. The odour is unbearable, and the mosquito problem has worsened." In Vijyant Khand, residents reported overflowing bins and unattended waste. With the monsoon nearing, residents are concerned about potential waterlogging, mosquito breeding, and outbreaks of diseases like dengue and gastrointestinal infections. Those living along Sitapur Road urged the LMC to not only ensure timely collection but also run awareness campaigns against open dumping. When contacted, senior municipal official Lalit Kumar said, "Instructions have been issued to all operators to ensure complete waste collection and proper disposal. Non-compliance will lead to penalties."

Best of BS Opinion: Economic shifts, environmental hopes, policy crossroads

Here are the best of Business Standard's opinion pieces for today Abhijeet Kumar New Delhi In a significant move to stimulate economic growth, the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee reduced the policy repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent and the cash reserve ratio by 100 basis points in phased stages, injecting ₹2.5 trillion into the banking system. While inflation eased to 3.2 per cent in April, the MPC shifted its stance from 'accommodative' to 'neutral,' indicating limited room for future rate cuts. The GDP forecast remains at 6.5 per cent, but the RBI stressed that achieving higher long-term growth would require structural reforms beyond monetary tools. Launched on World Environment Day, the Aravalli Green Wall Project aims to restore 700 km of degraded terrain across four states. Inspired by Africa's Great Green Wall, the plan involves reviving native flora and water bodies to enhance India's carbon sink. However, challenges remain due to ongoing illegal mining and encroachments. As our second editorial highlights, without stronger governance and interstate coordination, experts warn the project could falter, repeating past mistakes seen in the Western Ghats conservation efforts. In his column, Ajay Shah writes that India's economic prospects depend not just on rate cuts but on five strategic levers: trade liberalisation, soft monetary policy, structural reform, capital account liberalisation, and a weaker rupee. He notes that weak private investment and capital controls have stifled India's global competitiveness. While India benefits from geopolitical realignments like the China+1 shift, FDI inflows remain low. Trade deals with the UK and potential pacts with the US and EU offer an opportunity, but without bold reform, India risks falling short. Meanwhile, Sunita Narain cautions that India's EV transition is progressing too slowly to meet its climate and urban mobility goals. While electric three-wheelers show growth, adoption in other segments lags, and urban congestion worsens. She stresses that counting electric vehicles is not enough, cities must expand public transport, reduce private vehicle use, and align EV policy with air quality and mobility planning. Finally, Ted Widmer reviews John Hancock: First to Sign, First to Invest in America's Independence by Willard Sterne Randall, a biography that revives the legacy of the often-overlooked Founding Father. The book underscores Hancock's role in financing and steering the revolution, while also exploring the complexities surrounding his political and social legacy. Stay tuned!

Prayagraj: A 20-year-old BTech first-year student of MNNIT (Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology), Allahabad, allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room inside the institute campus on Thursday, police said. However, no suicide note was recovered from the room. The deceased, Nikesh Kumar Rohidas, was a resident of Semariya village of Janjgir–Champa district of Chhattisgarh. Feeling suspicious, they called up hostel and college authorities, who then called up the police. Police broke the door open to find the victim's body. His fellow inmates told police that he had even packed his belongings on Wednesday to return to his native place after the exams were over on Thursday. KPUC inmates stage road blockade over assault case and police action

Prayagraj: Chaos prevailed outside the KPUC hostel as inmates of this hostel of trust staged a road blockade (chakka jam), demanding justice in a recent assault case that occurred on University Road earlier this week. The protest was triggered by an incident on May 12, when a student of Allahabad University and an inmate of the KPUC hostel was allegedly attacked near the hostel premises by a local shopkeeper, leaving the student with a serious head injury. Students submitted a written complaint to the police, urging strict action against the accused. The inmates believed that while an FIR was registered, it notably lacked the section pertaining to an attempt to murder, leading to allegations of police negligence . According to the protesting students, the police were allegedly siding with the accused and deliberately avoiding the inclusion of serious charges in the FIR. With no significant action taken even five days after the incident, students staged a road blackade. The situation escalated into a chakka jam outside the hostel, drawing the attention of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abhijeet Kumar, who arrived at the scene and assured the students that appropriate action would be taken. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch Bitcoin và Ethereum - Không cần ví! They have warned that failure to meet these demands will lead to a larger, university-wide protest. Owing to the road blockade, traffic was adversely affected on the busy Motilal Nehru Road. Commuters were forced to take alternative routes. After around an hour of total chaos, traffic returned to normal following the intervention of police officials and the assurance given by the ACP.
