Dan Evans reproduces form of old to beat Frances Tiafoe at Queen's Club

Dan Evans opened up the men's tournament at Queen's Club with his biggest win for more than two years, toppling Frances Tiafoe – the seventh seed and world No 13 – 7-5, 6-2 to reach the second round. The victory marks Evans's first win against a top-20 opponent since he defeated Alex de Minaur in the Davis Cup finals in 2023 and a positive step forward after an extremely difficult period in the final stretch of his career. Evans scaled as high as No 21 less than two years ago but he now sits at No 199 in the ATP rankings. He received a wildcard to compete at Queen's Club and he will also need a wildcard in order to compete in the main draw at Wimbledon in two weeks' time. 'It's always amazing to play here,' he said. 'I didn't know he was in the top 20, if I'm honest with you. I knew he was very good. I was really just trying to focus on playing some good tennis because this year it's been few and far between. Days like today, whatever happens this week, is why I've been carrying on to get out here and put my game on the court and enjoy it.' Last month, Evans's ranking of No 215 marked his lowest position since 2018. He has spent most of the past 10 months competing on the ATP Challenger tour and he has reached just one quarter-final during this period. As he has struggled to build any momentum, even losing against multiple players ranked outside the top 350, his difficulties have naturally generated ample doubts about his future in the sport. Advertisement 'It has been a pretty long year so far, I've been playing the lower tournaments and, let's be honest, this is why I'm still hanging around to get back on the grass and try and get some wins,' Evans said. Evans put together a spectacular match on Monday on the grass, a surface to which his distinct game remains so well suited. Evans bamboozled his American opponent throughout the match with his backhand slice, struck his forehand brilliantly and served well in the decisive moments. During his 95 minutes on court, Evans showed he is still capable of performing at the highest level on a good day, in favourable conditions and before a home crowd that provided him with further inspiration. He will now try to use the confidence he has gained from such an impressive performance to replicate this level on a more consistent basis.

Schoolkate triumph heads Aussies' pre-Wimbledon push

Australian Tristan Schoolkate has lifted his first grass-court title in England - only to celebrate his breakthrough triumph by cadging a lift to his next tournament from the man he beat in the final. Schoolkate's victory in the Ilkley Trophy was the highlight of a weekend when Australia's tennis men began some impressive muscle-flexing on the grass with Wimbledon in their sights. The rising Perth professional who began the year by taking a set off world No.1 Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, moved towards the edge of the game's top 100 with his win on Sunday. The traditional, picturesque grass-court Challenger event adjacent to the famous Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire has become a pre-Wimbledon staple and it was a real feather in the 24-year-old's cap to become the second Australian holder of the Trophy after Jason Kubler prevailed two years ago. Still driving me tomorrow, right? 😅Opponents today, road trip buddies tomorrow 🚗Schoolkate 🤝 Pinnington Jones#ATPChallenger | @the_LTA | @TennisAustralia — ATP Challenger Tour (@ATPChallenger) June 15, 2025 Schoolkate, who will rise to a new career-high of 106 in Monday's rankings, had to battle back from a set down to beat British wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones 6-7 (8-10) 6-4 6-3 and grab his first ever title on a grass court. As he enjoyed his victory at the trophy presentation, Schoolkate had the crowd laughing when he revealed that Pinnington Jones was due to be chauffeuring him to his next event 145km away at the Nottingham Open Challenger later on Sunday evening. "Hopefully, Jack still wants to take me tonight!" smiled Schoolkate. "He offered to drive us! I'll shout the Guinnesses!" Looking at the patriotic crowd, he added: "They all got behind you today - I tried to pretend that my name was Jack..." Schoolkate is yet to win a match on grass at tour-level but he'll go into Wimbledon qualifying in eight days time high on confidence after a tournament in which he had to battle through four three-setters to take the crown. Congratulations, champs!ATP Doubles Champions at Libéma Open 2025 🏆🎾#libemaopen #LO2025 #ATP250 #tennis — Libéma Open🎾 (@LibemaOpen) June 14, 2025 It was the second Australian title success of the weekend after the fledgling doubles partnership of Jordan Thompson and Matt Ebden picked up the title at Rosmalen in the Netherlands in just their first ATP tournament together. The duo, who'd previously won their only Davis Cup rubber together, beat British duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool 6-4 3-6 [10-7] on Saturday as Thompson celebrated his eighth tour-level doubles crown and Ebden his 13th - and first since he won Olympic gold with John Peers. The pair will next play in the prestigious Queen's Club Championship where the Australian men's contingent will be out in full force after two more battled through all-Aussie qualifying ties on Sunday to make the singles main draw alongside Thompson, Alexei Popyrin and Alex de Minaur. Aleksandar Vukic defeated Adam Walton 6-4 6-4 while Alex Bolt, the 32-year-old veteran world No.186 who always seems to come alive with the scent of the grass in his nostrils, upset world No.80 Chris O'Connell 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Vukic's reward is another all-Australian clash in the first round against Popyrin, while Bolt will play rising Briton Jacob Fearnley. De Minaur, back in business after taking a break following his early exit at the French Open, will open up against Czech Jiri Lehecka, while Thompson will play Spain's Jaume Munar.

Sumit Nagal Loses Again! Sixth First-Round Exit In 2025 ATP Challenger Season

Last Updated: Sumit Nagal lost 4-6, 6-7 (4) to French unseeded player Geoffrey Blancaneaux. India's singles player Sumit Nagal continued his struggles with another first-round exit from the ATP Challenger circuit on Monday. Sixth-seeded Nagal lost 4-6, 6-7 (4) to unseeded Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux in the opening round of the €145,250 clay-court event. Despite being down a set and a break, Nagal broke back in the eighth game of the second set, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, inconsistent serving from both players led to a second-set tie-breaker, which Blancaneaux ultimately won. This marks Nagal's sixth first-round defeat on the Challenger circuit in the 2025 season. His ranking has dropped to 170 from inside the top 100 at the start of the year.

Emma Raducanu set to compete at Lexus Eastbourne Open

Emma Raducanu returns to Eastbourne after reaching last year's quarter finals, and as she looks to claim her maiden title on grass. The defending Wimbledon ladies' singles champion Barbora Krejcikova will join Raducanu on the south coast, as she seeks to prepare for her title defence in the best possible way, though both will have to contend with reigning Eastbourne champion Daria Kasatkina of Australia, two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur, and rising British star Sonay Kartal. On the men's side, the USA's world number four Taylor Fritz returns to Eastbourne as defending champion, and looks to add another grass-court title to his collection having already won three times at Devonshire Park. Rebecca James, Tournament Director of the Lexus Eastbourne Open, said, "Eastbourne has always been one of the highlights of the season for players and the strength of the field coming to Devonshire Park this summer is testament to that. "With Taylor Fritz leading the men's pack in pursuit of a fourth Eastbourne crown, four grand slam champions on the women's side, with Emma Raducanu, Barbora Krejcikova, Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin as well as last year's champion in Daria Kasatkina, and a wheelchair draw stacked with Paralympic pedigree, it's set to be another fantastic week of competition." British number two Jacob Fearnley has committed to the event, having experienced a meteoric rise from 525 in the world to 55 in just 12 months kickstarted by his first ATP Challenger title in Nottingham last summer. Meanwhile, champion of the 2024 edition of the HSBC Championships Tommy Paul, and Czechia's Jakub Mensik, who claimed the biggest title of his career earlier in the season by winning the Masters 1000 Miami Open, are also among those looking to dethrone Fritz. Alongside the men's and women's draws, the Lexus Eastbourne Open will once again feature wheelchair tennis action, with an ITF 1 Series event set to feature several of Britain's leading players, including multiple Paralympic gold medallist Gordon Reid in the men's, British women's wheelchair number one Lucy Shuker, and Paris 2024 Paralympic medallists Andy Lapthorne and Greg Slade in the quads. The full entry list can be found on the LTA website. Tickets start from just £11 for adults and £5 for children and can be purchased via the LTA website.
